Hey everyone!

I was curious and wanted to ask: for the female gamers out there, what kinds of games tend to draw you in the most, and why?

Recently I’ve been playing Blade & Soul NEO (an action combat MMORPG), and I was honestly surprised by how many female players I met there. I think I ran into more in that one game than in all the others I’ve played before combined!

My guess is that the mix of stylish outfits(unlock-able by just playing) and fast-paced combat has something to do with it—but I’d love to hear your thoughts. What features or genres usually make a game appealing to you?

Looking forward to your replies!

Not a woman, but maybe I can give some insights. I never flat out asked tho. But women gamers I've known for years unanimously become interested in a game if it has cute characters that appeal to them. I can name off like 10 real life examples now. Playing a game only because of something like Menat's walk and outfit lol.

Superficial? No... super fucking awesome! I think we've all done the same haha.

And you're right, changing outfits is generally big with female gamers. A lot of women I knew don't put their characters in the overly sexy outfits either (although sometimes!), that's waaay more a guy thing.

Ruining the avatars in Pokemon Go (they made them very ugly for "realism") also ruined the clothes making them glitch out and altering nearly every original outfit combination for the worse. The same patch also disabled the game on Androids for a while. Something like 1/3 or 1/4 of my friends list on that game stopped playing with this change, and very few came back. This was like 100 people who before played regularly. Fucking crazy, like a Pokemon Go mass murder. By far, in the top three worst patches I've ever seen. So foolish. Over a year since, and nearly all bugs from this patch are still not fixed. I'm certain the avatar/outfit thing turned a lot of women off, a couple who already were telling me there wasnt much to do in the game anymore anyways.

Character/story development seems important and this is why they tend to hate being spoiled on story more than men (imo). I think for this reason is why they are so often attracted to RPGs, VNs (otome?), and MMOs quite a lot haha. A lot of "couples gaming" is in MMOs and even play-the-story-type games from what I've seen.

Simulation games are big with women, so maybe the controlled and relaxed social setting is appealing. Maybe that explains why they were all playing Animal Crossing? And its cute! lol

A lot of women used to play Mercy in OW too! Probably still do. She's cute, but in addition what if that simpler relaxed playstyle and feeling useful nonetheless made her very appealing over others? Another dev disaster was changing Mercy a lot either gutting her making her less fun, overnerfing her, or overbuffing her resulting in a lot of new toxicity towards Mercy players. Women on my friends list would always complain about the changes. I knew Blizzard was fucking up bad hearing that!

So many female gamers on FF14 too, I dont play it but I know its big on clothes and collaborative play that doesnt seem overly competitive or grindy, so maybe there's something to that. Maybe this will give some insight since its obviously influenced by her opinion lol (love this video btw :D!)

Woman, ex "gamer" the games that drew me in the most were whatever my friend's and family's I knew were playing. Gaming always more of a social activity for me.

I discovered few games my own like Disgaea, Heavy rain, and fallout what I like about them was the story, characters and the world lesser. Even most single players were games I played to talk about with other people.

Women love to play lot of multiplayer games. It wasn't too uncommon to know to see women on Call of duty, overwatch, Red Dead 2, WOW, Roblox or the Final Fantasy mmo.

My younger sister mostly stuff like Sims, animal crossing, Pokemon and horror games. For her it's about definitely more about style and fashion for me purely social.

I like games that allow me to escape reality for a bit and help me socialize, even if it's with NPCs.

Latchkey kid, raised as an only child. Parents we're not home until about 6 in the evening music and gaming. I like fast pace action and adventure.

Red Dead Redemption is still undefeated even today.

I am super weak to great storylines. RPGs are my jam. I also like playing with a mixed cast of characters. General exploration is fun, and if the setting is really vibrant. But mainly I am a sucker for JRPGs.

I'm a big fan of adventure, sandbox and simulation. I like some JRPGs but I mostly prefer games where I can make my own fun and explore.

girl gamer here,
i usually enjoy stuff that is aesthetically pleasing, fun & stimulating.

i used to be a huge fan of pokemon games as a kid, i can't count how many times i finished pokemon red/emerald, lol.

i enjoy league of legends (it helps me relieve stress and have fun but i have also been harassed a LOT, so i don't know what to think of it), visual novels (i love horror & dark themes, but i pretty much enjoy everything), gacha games (genshin, honkai series, blue archive, zenless zone zero... i love playing the story + pulling for characters. purely gambling addiction...), horror games & simulations.

i also love games with lore & big fanbase, so i see people actually discussing about it.

I can't help but see we might have similar tastes, especially with the gacha game category. I tried getting into horror games, but I somehow got squeamish / more scared even though I don't mind the genre at all and actively like it. So I started to go toward more of the gothic horror route, stuff like Bloodborne, Death End, Shadow Hearts.

I didn't ever get into League, but I use to play a ton of Overwatch before the sequel came out.

But absolutely, I agree, anything with growing lore, is something I love. Anything that stimulates my brain with world building.

P.S. Your Elysia avatar is really nice! (I think it is Elysia!)

gacha games are truly addictive! i can definitely relate, i sometimes mute the sounds because of that... i've heard about bloodborne & shadow hearts but never had the chance to play them, how were they like? :0

i see a lot of overwatch content, and the gameplay really looks entertaining~
if you are planning to play league, i would definitely recommend muting the team at some point, people can be really toxic there sadly...

exactly!! i really enjoy a good story and a good world-building :D

thank you so much, i'm happy someone recognizes her!! it is her! (。・ω・。)ノ♡

Bloodborne is great if you like Souls-like games. It was actually my first entry into Souls-like and now I wouldn't say I actively play that genre anymore. I am just not as patient as I use to be, plus, not as much time. But if you like the themes, I found it had interesting lore. I would go back and listen to analysis that YouTubers compiled together about the game -- a lot of the lore are in the items!

Shadow Hearts is one of my favourite old school RPGs. But it is very dated right now, and the only way to really play without owning a copy is through emulation. I don't think these games are ever coming back since the publishing rights is a mess and the old studios are no longer gaming studios, if I recall correctly. I am also sad that the successor of this series is probably never going to get their game out because they ran into trouble with getting a publisher on board (Penny Blood is the title -- they originally tried to gauge interest/new IP value via a joint Kickstarter campaign).

I am looking forward to Elysia-like character when she comes to Star Rail since I am way behind on the times with HI3.

i don't know that much about souls-like games, but from what i gathered on the internet, it looks really interesting! i feel like i would like it if i tried the game, but sticking to the youtubers is all i can do at the moment :") listening to lore is actually fun for me, so i'll give it a try!

that sucks... i'm sorry to hear about that, i probably won't get to play the game properly. if still possible, i hope everything gets sorted out.

same!! i am already saving up for her, she has to come home! (个_个) i hope they will prepare something exciting for her~

I do for mechanics, or historical so for me it's very different nowadays, meaning I go retro.

But I do know female gamers that do for story, or familiarity of rules. Not always cosmetic or rule familiarity or so. Accessible sure can be a fair reason but not always cute artstyle, outfits, characters or other stuff. It varies though.

Maybe some do gacha games for their husbandos, no clue. The odd otome games maybe....

I can't say for those that play popular games, for social aspects, etc. I think that's just what some female content creators do, views or they only play whatever they have heard of. While people that have played games for years, you'd have your odd familiar stuff, you know licensed games of certain IPs, whether for everyone, for girls, etc. out there, or other stuff you'd play with of toys and things, but otherwise over time try other types of games.

If people are into sports or whatever is popular with other types sure, or whatever things. If more particular books, tv shows, toys, other media then yeah it crossing over into games or whatever are better as games/games can do that others can't maybe.

That and then get into whatever books/tv shows and that to games, with particular worlds or humour or characters and things.

So if story it's usually RPGs, if it's other genres it if it has a good tone say like Little Nightmares as more accessible horror. It kind of varies. Can be what it popular but other times whatever they see in the eshops. Is open to pixel art. Did play Sims or plays some cozy games. It varies the angle it goes for which makes sense, you don't know till you see something and go yeah that has an appeal to it of what this is going for, whatever that may be.

In terms of another I know of, it can be familiarity, so maybe they like gardening/farming games or city builders, things that aren't too much action or unfamiliar. Sometimes an action adventure game but as much as it isn't too awkward to play or too violent. Also not as much pixel art, has to be stylised in a fair cartoony way or realistic.

I see the odd female retro gamers and they give some fair perspective when I watch their videos.

I think some people it can be cosmetic, or rules not too unfamiliar, but other time it can just be an appealing artstyle or story.

Mechanical or underlying stuff I think is less the case, so like with any types it's more about the world or the tone or the look. While for me it's not that as I've gotten to the point of being broad on themes, or setting and more just gameplay, so I'm more picky then those picky about it has to be fantasy/sci-fi or a wild west or contemporary or otherwise.

I could say things like simple things emotion or social situations but it's more then that.

For some people sure like soap operas but others do care about a rich world and the different rules it's universe may have, compelling characters/actions to those characters and so on. Not pointless drama but actual value in the conversations/dialogue and things you encounter.

Some may a gameplay loop but i think it's more the world/characters and I can see why.
