“Even though he’s not here anymore, he left me with three things, his guitar, a song he wrote and the determination to be a hero” 💔 man fuck the Dean. Cyan and Luo deserved to get their happy ending.

This episode absolutely infuriated me because of the audacity of the orphanage director to keep Cyan around and exploit her lucky ability for his own personal gain all because his bumass failed to become a hero. She wasn’t even a person to him, just a means to an end and if the dude who took her to the orphanage knew what was going on I’m sure he’d feel disgusted.

The fact Cyan made a living and name for herself by street performing and was basically trying to get big enough for Luo to find her is soo beautiful, but sad. You can feel all the emotion in her performances and lyrics. She finally got a chance to do the stuff she loved to do, after being introduced to it by Luo :/ got annoyed when the cult worshippers showed up to try and get her lucky ability again like fuck off!

The big live performance was so beautiful. Until proven otherwise Cyan is a Miku variant lol. I love her sm.

Wtf is that ending tho??! Is that Luo’s doing or did the director somehow manipulate him into turning evil or what? 🤔 this show loves leaning us off on cliffhangers. Need next episode badly

wow X kickstarted Cyan's busking career. In a way that coin gave her the inspiration to do good via music!

From the hero PV i could already sense that Cyan is meant to lose her best friend. Her grown up self saw the young Cyan and Luo as a memory.

Some cultural context:

It's important to note that Lucky Cyan was almost certainly intended to parallel education and parental pressure in China, which is a very big issue for the Chinese youth. The Dean being a hero and "passing his dream" to the younger generation, the rhetoric of "I worked so hard to give you the right conditions for success", and phrases equivalent to "why don't you appreciate all I've given you?" are all stereotypes of the typical Chinese tiger parent. A key theme of this episode is its criticism of tiger parents: the episode insinuates that they work their children to fuel their own ego, and actually don't care about the well-being of their children like they say they do.

For context, Chinese parents value education a lot more, especially in urban areas, because a few generations ago, they were basically peasants and education was their only way to a decent life. Almost all Chinese parents act under the assumptions that this is still the case, leading to extreme pressure and academic competition. Lucky Cyan is definitely meant to represent modern youth who are finding their own paths in a new world; the show argues that to succeed, Chinese youth should be more rebellious and independently-minded. Considering the main demographic of bilibili (the producer of the show) is made up of young people, this makes sense.

Another interesting bit is the criticism of cult worshipping; this is probably a message inserted by the CCP. 封建迷信 (feudal superstition, with feudal referring to imperial China) is considered by the CCP to be a major issue, and there are adverts all over China telling people not to be superstitious. Old traditions are considered outdated and holding the country back from knowledge and progress. The idiotic old women worshipping Cyan in this episode is a very common caricature of a superstitious and uncultured Chinese person.

That aside, X shows up this episode! This guy is just showing up to everyone's canon events because he wants to. What's up with Luo as well? Why is everyone a zombie?

What the Dean probably told Luo is that Cyan's the cause for the Plane crash. Which caused him to be seen as a disaster and becoming an orphan.

Luo and Cyan were likely on the same plane, as Cyan noted to Luo that she heard the melody to his song before. It's possible that it's from his parents, and Cyan was close to them on the plane to overhear the melody sang to Luo by his parents.

Sadly either Luo's going to be killed next episode by Cyan. Or he's taken by the Spotlight Organization for his ability to cause destruction. Looking at episodes 10's preview, the director of DOS directly talks about Fear. So I'm leaning toward the latter occurring.

That aside, the Cyan concert we see this episode is happening concurrently/right after Yang Chen's fight against the original E-Soul. With both occurring at Year 36 AC.

Also what happened to Luo is really messed up, as the escape attempt is at Year 34 AC. Bones takes around 12 weeks to heal with proper care, but it's been 2 years and we see that Luo's still heavily injured. Suggesting that he barely got any. Furthermore, it seems that he's left in solitary confinement with almost amenities. Not even a bed to rest on despite having broken bones.

So I'm guessing the orphanage director learned about fear and used it utilize Luo's misfortune powers? Wonder what he told him. Maybe his parents were on the plane that crashed and he told him it was Cyan's fault.

Beautiful to see Cyan becoming a hero through her own talents instead of relying on her luck powers. Though the old worshippers that recognized her probably helped a bit.

Luo's singing was dubbed!! I'm so happy they were able to do that.

Cyan can escape the orphanage, but her worshippers are such a persistent bunch. I'm hoping it's a sign of good luck that she ran into DOS and became a hero.

It looks like fear value has returned with that cliffhanger ending. I'm curious to see what's going on there.

Well, I figured Dean wanted Cyan because she was helping him achieve his goal of creating heroes, but the fact that he just straight up used her for her power makes him even worse.

After escaping, Cyan had a tough time, but with her talent for singing, she managed to make a living somehow until she went viral and was later recruited by a hero agency. I'm still wondering what happened to her request to find her friend Luo, which still hasn't been addressed.

What did the Dean tell Luo that made him go crazy after hearing it? And I'm also confused as to why Cyan didn’t come for Luo and talked about him during her concert, as if he's already dead. Does she not know, or did her agency hide this from her on purpose?

And what's happening in the ending? It looks like the people there have been turned into zombies, with one exception being Dean, who still has his consciousness unlike the others. We also didn’t see Luo at the end, so it’s possible that all of this happened because of his powers.

So it's now Year 36.. the same time of E-Soul's Arc

And of course the show is gonna hurt me again, at least Luo didn't die.. but what happened was even worse, and I just know it will go on for more.

I also thought the guy who gave Cyan the first coin was X! what if right?!

Got me wondering what the dean said to Luo that affected him so much. And obviously, it is somehow the catalyst to what's happening in the orphanage now. I wonder if Cyan's luck does come at the cost of those around her and that her survival is what caused all those deaths in the plane crash?

One more thing I found interesting. All of Lucky Cyan's arc has been in 2D animation. Not sure if it's accurate, but if I remember correctly from a prior discussion, that the switching of animation style between 2D and 3D is part of X's power, or supposed to represent it in some manner. Maybe it's just for art purposes or budget or something idk, but I did find it interesting that they haven't shown her in 3D.

Ok Cyan managed to escape and surprisingly Luo is still alive. Ngl I thought he would get Isekai'd by that truck. Maybe though that would've been a better ending for Luo though cause idk wtf is going with the orphanage right now but it seems fucked up. I guess the opposite of a hero raised by trust value but someone with power of fear? or something idk. Would be interested in seeing how fear works compared to Trust.

Also we see her luck being able to be used to cause accidents in order to help herself. Then we also see that without her trust value she actually isn't lucky since she lost with that lottery ticket. So really she was lucky only because people believed that she was and giving her trust value. Also that first guy that gave her a coin I feel has to be important but idk who it is. From seeing the other comments thought it might be X? I wonder how involved X will be with all the heroes if that was him? Because we at least know he's involved with Ahu the dog hero.

Also that concert is totally the 3 seat episode as well right?

Too much songs for my taste, also the disconnect between the singing voice and the VA voice (or maybe this is the case for the chinese dub only)...
Also I have the feeling that something is missing in this arc. It was planned differently, but rewritten in the last moment?

Some fresh moments tho:
The lottery is rigged, kid! Luck has nothing to do with it.

@pixelante No. As far as I'm aware, the Communist Party of China's stance is the typical boomer stance of "young people don't want to work anymore". Variations of this statement has been repeated numerous times by government officials and published government newspapers.

Oh man, i fell in love with this donghua from episode 1 and got really invested in Lin Ling's story. It was so nice, the art was great and that finale (which i did not know was one...) of suspense with the Moon cliffhanger was insane !

Which is why i found episode 4 (or 5, can't remember) to this episode 9 to have been increasingly frustrating. I have no knowledge of the source material if there was any (novel, manhua, anything) so I was really confused by the changes of POV like that (i honestly thought these were just side characters). I now realize that they'll probably keep introducing new main characters across arcs of 2-3 episodes until they will all be facing each other in some tournament to choose the next Hero X, as per the opening and ending hint.

And it looks like there are like 5 or 6 more characters left too. Maybe i should just wait for every episodes to be released first so that i can be disappointed (or pleasantly surprised, who knows) only once, instead of every Sunday for the next 15 weeks.
