I've been thinking and I think that this anime was released at the wrong time, at a time where blu-ray was much more important in addition to only needing to be popular in Japan to get sequels, but if it were released today at a time when animes are more popular all over the world without depending so much on Blu-ray sales, plus its premise is very interesting about effort vs talent, but unfortunately it has always been underestimated compared to its brother Bunny girl, But it always seemed good to me in everything, its animation and soundtrack are
good, its characters are well developed and identifiable, it seems to me to be an anime that had everything going for it and that nowadays would be much more popular but it seems that in Japan it was not recognized as it deserved, and I bet that Shiina Mashiro would be a one of the great waifus today since she has a very original and unique personality rarely seen in anime, her look is beautiful and cute, her voice actress is popular, and she also has great development, perhaps if it got a second season many who wouldn't watched it would watch first season before making it more popular than it is today.

I'm pretty sure that the story is finished, that it got the hype and recognition it deserved when it came out as well as the right categorization a decade later, by which I mean today, as sort of a classic for those in the know, by which I mean people who currently watch and have watched A LOT of anime, which is why maybe nowadays you don't hear about it the same way you hear about shows like death note, that managed to escape gatekeeping and anime culture to go into the mainstream. And Mashiro shiina is an original, not often seen character? I beg to differ. Same for all of the characters in fact. They're all walking tropes. The perfect girl who's actually an airhead trope is everywhere in anime from the 2000s and 2010s. Easiest example is angel beats.

What I'm trying to say is that your post is kinda nonsense.

I won't speak as to how popular it was 13 or 14 years ago because I wasn't into anime then, but I get the feeling it didn't stay under people's radar.

It's almaost at 1.3 million members I'm not sure how much more popular it would be Blu-ray or otherwise. There is more to adapt though but apparently it's a downhill slope in the manga after the end of the anime so they probably wouldn't adapt the rest if it has released today anyway.

@IhnalakoKaina He never had enough recognition, maybe in the West he had his recognition, that would explain the amount of users who added him here, but in Japan his sales were never the best, at most he could only pay for the production courses, and I compared it to Bunny Girl because both are from the same creator and Bunny Girl was clearly a much bigger success than Sakurasou no pet, and I say that Mashiro is a unique character because she is not a typical Kuudere like Kanade, Inori yuzuriha, Mai Kawazumi or Nagato Yuki, she has her entire history of having her life dedicated to art, and although it has not been said and confirmed, she has bullish traits because that explains her high dependence and difficulty in expressing herself to others, but even so, she showed good development throughout the series, because we do not see bullish characters so often, at most we had Lawliet and Kotomi Ichinose, but I also disagree about you wanting to say that she is perfect (that's what I understood) because she has a lot of dedication and concentration to do what she learned, because this perfection of hers is actually something that the characters themselves think of her but even she developed as the series progressed and stopped looking like a kuudere to someone more cute and adorable, and because of all this layer around her I say that she is a very original character, I hope my explanation has become easier to understand now

I don’t know how a story like this could get exposure for new anime fans, but it’s certainly on par with things like Haruhi and ToraDora. A continuation would fail for me, I think the original show sorted all the loose ends and concluded perfectly. But I’d welcome a remake. In the modern environment of thirsty fan service obsessives versus moral fan service haters, I’d be interested to see how they portrayed the innocent nudity to not alienate some oversensitive demographic or other.

I think it would a "If you know you know" type of show even more if it came out today. The type of show people watched back then was a bit more varied. The "shonen meat head" demographic while always big was just half as big as it seemingly is today (or maybe just not as loud even though they were still loud).

I think it's a very charming little drama series, but it has a lot of highly questionable things to say about neurodivergent people that definitely dates it for me at least.

def a product of its time.

No, I don't think so. I liked this show a lot, I thought the writing was great, but there wasn't much of an overall history so there wasn't much of an ending.

I don't agree I do feel that Pet Girl of Sakurasou is a good series, but if anything I would argue it more fits the 2012 landscape of animanga than it does the 2025 landscape. It feels like anime has kind of moved away generally from emotionally touching storytelling and more into technical and thematic storytelling if that makes any sense. Like a series like Clannad, Toradora! Or Angel Beats! All I feel like would have done worse if released now (At least relative to average).

It's a great series, but the audience that watches these types of shows has been a fan of anime for a while. I don't think a lot of the new Gen Watchers would pay it any mind. Therefore, I think it wouldn't be that much more popular than it already is if it came out today.

For example, no one really talks about Apothecary Diaries, and it is one of the best animes of the decade. It's only the seasonal watchers that don't just watch Shonen that enjoy these types of shows. I do see more of the new Gen Watchers branching out, but not enough to really make a difference.
