Somehow, I became a Discord admin.

A bit of backstory: When I joined MAL in 2014 (I can’t believe it’s been 10 years), I was only looking to catalog the anime I was watching to cope with a breakup; it actually helped me through it. I had no intention of being very social, but my forum comments and reviews started attracting attention, leading me to connect with some intriguing people. It was a pleasant surprise.

One person, sharing my interest in Marimite and Josie anime, suggested we start a club here on MAL for those who appreciate good characterization. One of those members then proposed creating a Discord server, and for the past 8 years, we’ve fostered a tight-knit group.

I’m 43 years old now. I’ve never fully understood what people seek from an online space. With the Discord server, I’ve aimed to keep things simple by maintaining a kind of public blog where members can discuss and comment on what they’re watching and reading.

When you join a Discord server, what do you look for? What keeps you coming back?
