I don't know if I ever start watching this show, but after checking some basic info about it, I've noticed quite a lot of similarities between "Sousou no Frieren" and "Violet Evergarden". At least when it comes to the general concept of this story.

Therefore, as someone who really enjoyed watching "Violet Evergarden" TV series, I'd like to ask people familiar with "Sousou no Frieren": is this series' story something, more or less, similar to "Violet Evergarden", just set in a fantasy world and with not that much great looking, but still good (from what I heard, at least) animation? Y'know, a show about a female main character who has problems with expressing and understanding emotions, wandering the world, meeting people, and slowly developing the ability to understand her own emotions by understanding others.

Thank you in advance for providing more information on this subject. Who knows, perhaps I will one day give it a try, haha. Right now, though, I'm more interested in feeding my curiosity. ;p

Edit: I specified that when talking about the "fantasy world", I meant of course "high fantasy" world, so something different than offered by "Violet Evergarden" that's also set in a fictional world.

I'm updated with both of the series and I don't see any similarities at all. But if you love a good story with an amazing art style you can definitely give 'Frieren' a try. you won't be disappointed.

I think they're kind of similar because they both have a character that is trying to find themselves after loosing track of who they are. They also both have amazing art and music

I was gonna disagree with you, but what you said about her learning to understand and express her own emotions is actually pretty on point. So yeah they are definitely similar in that way.

The only thing you said wrong is that the animation is ok to look at. The animation is actually insanely good believe it or not. Really impressive, especially since most fantasy shows nowadays have mediocre animation.

Fun Fact: The soundtrack in "Sousou no Frieren" was composed by Evan Call, who also made the soundtrack for the anime "Violet Evergarden."

Only thing both anime's have in common is calm and little nostalgic vibe.

Honestly you're pretty much right on the mark there with the similarities between the two MCs. I think others have already pointed out the most notable similarities (that being the soundtrack of both series being handled by Evan Call, and the light, melancholic aura both series exudes).

Instead, I think I can just share some differences instead that set Frieren apart from Violet Evergarden. For starters, at least from what's been released so far, Frieren has had action-heavy episodes as well with some insanely good fights. I'd also say Frieren's emotional undertones are more subtle than VE; even though the series explains well what the characters feel, there's quite a bit to unpack as well by yourself. Frieren also hasn't given that much focus on the side characters, often only focusing on the perspective of Frieren and her emotions, or sometimes lack thereof.

Honestly it's one of the best that has come out this year and I genuinely hope you get around to watching it some time.

Similar, yet slightly different.
Both shows are about a girl showing little emotions, who is on a journey of self discovery.

They have similar kind of feel and pacing but they're not really the same in any other way.

I've seen both "Sousou no Frieren" and "Violet Evergarden," and I can see why you're drawing comparisons. While they do share some similarities in terms of a female protagonist's emotional development and their journeys, I'd say "Sousou no Frieren" leans more into the high fantasy genre with magic and adventures, which sets it apart from the more grounded world of "Violet Evergarden."

neither character ever lost track of who they are.

with Frieren it's more understanding the importance of forming bonds with people and the regret she has of not getting closer to her party members.

with Violet it's trying to learn emotions and what love is. she is emotionless and the anime is a story of her trying to find what it means to live and love.

it's similar in the sense they are trying to understand important emotions and bonds, and trying to find themselves , but not after losing themselves.

Very similar vibes from the narration style. The animation is different but with similarity in color and feel. The storylines match in terms of main character development, as the main character goes from a cold hearted passive person to warming up eventually and becoming attached to the people she meets. Also, both are strong female characters in different ways. The presence of magic in Frieren is not meant to be center stage, moreso the character focus and their growth. I really like it so far and think both anime are similar and unique in their own ways.

Also, both are a slow burn, but with interesting plots that can be understood by an audience that has not read the manga (unlike the Magus Bride which I really don't like).

People that liked Violet Evergarden would probably like Frieren, but I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s like Violet Evergarden but in a high fantasy setting.

It is kind of like Violet Elfergarden, superficially at least, but it doesn't have the slightly queasy sentimentality which was the 1 think I didn't like in VE. Plus it's pretty funny albeit in a low key way. And it's firmly sat in Trad rpg fantasy world.
Imo VE is great, but Frieren is greater.

Not at all. Violet Evergarden is about a girl who suffered because of a war. Frieren is about an elf with too much time, and has regrets because of that

Nah.
It's dramatic, but less melodramatic.

It's also quite down to earth and eerie. It feels way more intricate than Evergarden.

There are actually problems and feelings that can't be dealt with via a cutesy letter, in it's first half.

Although beeing fantasy, Frieren feels way more realistic.

Seen both.
They're quite different.
* As far as the world goes, this is more Tolkien fantasy world, while Violet is just in our world 100-200 years back (basically). This has a magic system.
* Both are slow(ish) in order to build their themes, but Frieren isn't aiming for your tears directly (though it can happen). As a feel I'd say this ends up being more emotionally charging, rather than draining
* This has somewhat more action (though not the focus)
* Major themes are different
* Travelling is much more of a focus in Frieren
* Frieren is very wise and knowledgeable already, while Violet has a lot to learn throughout the story

But yeah similarities would be female leads, same ost composer, leads seem apathetic (for different reasons though and with different goals)

Oh my, thank you for a lot of kind responses (and I apologize for replying pretty late myself)! Now it makes sense, yeah. Despite few similarities here or there between "Violet Evergarden" and "Sousou no Frieren", these two shows also have a lot of differences, so it's not like the latter is the former, just in high fantasy setting.

I don't know if I will ever watch "Sousou no Frieren", but definitely I will have in mind what you have written in this thread. 💪 Thanks once again.

Yes yes, that's correct. I remember editing this thread's title shortly after creating it, all to word better what kind of setting I had in mind, haha. While both series are set in fictional worlds, "Sousou no Frieren" leans definitely to the high fantasy genre. I can tell even without watching it, haha.

Even though the outline of the two is different, they both have many similarities.
1. Female MC who learns to understand humans and love
2. It has a tragic love story, but Violet has a happy ending.
3. Heart touching story.
4. Calming atmosphere and beautiful visuals.
5. Music ( Of course they have the same composer Evan Call).
6. Stunning action even though it's not in the action genre.
7. MC's name is used as the anime title.

But the two are clearly different. Frieren shows more funny scenes between characters, I like both.
