In the trailer we see this shot

This is Walpurgisnacht, its nature is helplessness and it's the symbol of a fool that spins around and round.
You know who else this also sounds like?
Homura. Homura's the epitome of helplessness, and she sees herself as a stupid fool, as seen in her own witch in Rebellion.

Walpurgis is said to be one witch who fused with many.
We see three Homuras in the trailer.
WALPURGISNACHT = HOMURA?

Oh cool theory, also the idea that Walpugisnact is passed down from generation to generation implies perhaps Walpugisnact isn't an ordinary witch, given it was a witches coven if I'm not mistake so multiple witches it might be attested to helpless magical girls to absorb.

Also in magi record witches are shown to be territorial to an extent like magical girls. however magical girls often form teams prehaps a coven is a witches alternative to this.

I'm not sure, looking forward to the film.

It is interesting to suggest that Walpurgisnacht is and has been Homura all this time. It’s almost as if the only way for Madoka and Homura to be intertwined for eternity is if there exists an eternal conflict that is unsurpassable. That being said, this would have to imply that there existed an underlying conflict that predated Walpurgsinacht…or basically, the real reason why Homura decided to become a witch in the first place. This could either imply she was never destined to “be” with Madoka, so she became a magical girl and then witch to be with Madoka for eternity; or Madoka was destined to die somewhere deep into the past, and Homura’s wish was to “save” Madoka, and becoming a witch that is stuck in an endless cycle was the result of it. The bottom line is despite these theories, there still exists the existential conflict between Madoka’s Will and Homura’s Desire.

@thunderkitten13 My theory is that if Homura is Walpurgis, then it's still related to Homura's desire. There seems to be multiple Homuras, so if it's indeed only Homura as Walpurgis, then maybe they fused somehow into the witch, maybe all despairing over Madoka but in different ways. Selfish love vs selfless love. I might retract the theory I made in the thread though because I've been skimming threads and found other theories that made more sense. I'll talk about them below if you're interested.

@AnimePedestrian Since Walpurgis is passed down from generation to generation, I think it implies that this witch can potentially travel back in time. I'm pretty sure witches generally can't do this, but the wording here somewhat implies this for Walpurgis.

The other theories I've looked into:
1. Both Homura and Madoka are Walpurgis. In the trailer we see a seemingly unknown girl with Homura's black bow (which she got from Kamidoka after splitting her). She doesn't look exactly like Madoka, nor Homura; but she has black bows, ash blond colored hair, and a grey outfit. It looks like it could potentially be a fusion between Homura and Madoka, before becoming Walpurgisnacht.

2A. Walpurgisnacht formed from Homura's tampering. In the beginning of the trailer, we see Akuma Homura using a telephone to contact someone (some have speculated she's communicating with herself, which could partially tie back into the thread's initial theory). It sounds like she's giving contracts to other girls, fulfilling Kyuubey's incubator role and creating her own flock of magical girls. So, the cycle of suffering seems to continue in Homura's universe, and she's the one purposely continuing it. Maybe the girl with ash blond hair is one of the girls who became part of Walpurgis, and is one of the magical girls Homura gave a contract to. Any of the main cast could also potentially be part of Walpurgis with this theory, just their non-god counterparts.

2B. A sub-theory related to this is that the magical girls who were not saved by Kamidoka are now aware of Homura's tampering, and are angry at her for them being the only magical girls left out and not spared by their horrible fates. So, Walpurgis is formed, and with all its rage and despair in its heart, it's targeting Homura (?).

3. Walpurgis is the Law of Cycles taking the form of the ash blond haired girl in the trailer, and is angry at Homura for creating an imbalance. So, it sends Walpurgisnacht (or is Walpurgis) after Homura to end her reign.

@certainmiracle All of those sound plasiable as well. It could be Walpugisnact is some how connected to the previous repeats of history. If I had to guess to relate it to the main cast it could be all five of the Quintet

Again just a thought I do doubt there'll be lots of other magical girls like there was in magi record as a film is best kept lean.

'and so, let the curtain rise on tonight's dream.'
Homura is probably continuing with the nightmares for energy collection instead of wraiths, setting the stage for each nightmare.

it's not just homura's witch where we see this, but also her monologue to sayaka at the end of rebellion. her being hit by one of the tomatoes is reminiscent of an actual phenomena that started in the early 1900s, when audiences threw tomatoes at anyone they believed to be a poor performer. as it's homura's minions throwing them, we can reasonably deduce that homura believes herself to be both a bad actor and as such a fool.

Here's what I would do if I was the Author:

the nature of Homura, and madoka's wish is paradoxical by nature.

Homura wants to live in a world where she is the one who saves madoka, and madoka's wish leads her to become hope at the sacrifice of herself. which is why madoka split in two in that one particular shot, she needs to be both a free and a slave to her own selfless wish. it's a paradox.

now, we never get to see what happens as the result of this paradox, since rebellion ended with only giving only some small hints.

all we know is "it's bad in some way" because of sayaka's reaction, and the nature of her action in the context of the story. and we also know that she only took a "
part of" madoka, whatever that means.

so, we know this dynamic is paradoxical by nature,

and we know the forth movie is about possibly the biggest unexplained entity in the series.

I think Walpurgisnacht is created from this paradox.

madoka became a concept as old as time itself, it's not unreasonable to assume a paradox involving her that is meant to throw off the balance in some way is a legendary witch that has been spinning in confusion for generations.

Walpurgisnacht is the paradox created from an ultimate act of selfishness, and an ultimate act of selflessness.

that is what makes sense to me. but it's far from the only possible answer that could make sense.
