I can tell Kansai apart from Tokyo Japanese pretty easily, but I have a harder time with less common dialects. Apparently the MCs in Suzume were speaking in some rural accent of Japanese and I had no idea. In Harukana Receive they speak in the Okinawan dialect and I also couldn't tell.

they did? i didn't notice, interesting (edit:wait, i think you meant the grandma?) i remember looking up the dialect and it's so different from the standard Japanese that some would even classify it as a separate language.
i know that some characters speak Okinawan in Shiroi Suna - such as that fortune teller - and it's very easy to tell.
i can tell Osaka dialect from Kyoto, but i won't be able to discern, say, Nara from Kyoto or Kobe from Osaka. I also can't tell apart the many different dialects in Kanto. If it sounds like Tokyo dialect, i will just assume it is Tokyo dialect.

I can kind of notice the Kansai dialect because of the Yakuza games, but beyond that, no.

I sometimes can hear Kansai dialect, if I'm paying attention. It's probably because I've known people who speak Kansai dialect natively, and I've heard them speak.

Yes, I am an expert at picking up on Japanese dialects, the English dub makes it clear who is talking with what accent.

Yes, it is pretty obvious.

Heiji Hattori is from Osaka and he speaks in kansai dialect. It is momentarily seen.

Only in the dub when a character randomly starts speaking like they're from King of the Hill.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

I could only tell the difference when I watched Erased and now in the new episode of Oshi no Ko, maybe because I pay more attention to the language rather to the subs, yet sometimes I confuse dialect with standard Japanese and then I talk like it at my lectures...

Only when it's been dub and they give every character with a Kansai accent a country accent.

Yes but that’s because I’m studying Japanese linguistics at university. A few of my assignments have been about explaining the differences in spoken Japanese which are not only by accents but also by age and status.

Sometimes, like when in Himouto! Umaru-chan, Ebina-san suddenly forgets where she is and starts speaking in her native dialect, then gets very embarrassed: I think that's pretty funny and cute and the same time.

I've often wondered if sub watchers can even differentiate between good and bad Japanese voice acting.

A lot of criticism of dubs stems from bad VAs, but you never hear that said about subs.

this thread isn't even about subs versus dubs yet dub fans still drag this discussion into threads unrelated to it because they can't accept that many simply prefer watching anime in the original language.
from what i have seen, most who prefer watching subs do so because they want to watch anime how it was originally made and because they don't want to deal with localizations (although some subtitles can be so liberal or inaccurate as to be nicknamed 'dubtitles' by some)

voice acting in Japan is a serious business. there are several acting schools in Japan that specifically prepares students to work in the anime industry. many have anime voice acting veterans teaching the class and some have agreements with the industry, where you get a chance to join the work force by passing an audition. in some cases, the anime studio will hold an audition nationwide to find that perfect candidate for the role. In the series Primagi, for example, they accepted applications from over 500,000 students ranging from elementary all the way to high school to voice the new character Omega, Auru. After 3 or 4 selection steps, where the candidates go through the interview process and act the character to the best of their abilities, the production team (which includes the director and others) finally agree on 1 candidate. 1 candidate out of over 500,000 nationwide. You won't see anything close to this for dubs.

besides the time and effort the anime studios put into choosing the right candidate for the role, the voice actors work with the director and others from the production team to ensure their acting sound just right. sometimes the director can even get input from the original author to see if the voice acting matches their vision of how the characters should sound like. most dub companies don't have the luxury of working with the original director. Cowbow Beepop is a rare exception and is also considered to have one of the best English dubs ever made for anime.

I can distinguish between dialects. I'm not so good at listening to the Northeast.... To begin with, I sometimes speak in dialect.

Or rather, I sometimes feel that dialects in anime are unnatural because they are unnecessarily exaggerated. My personal favorites are probably the dialects of Kochi, Hiroshima, and Hakata.

Not really. I think the one I'm most familiar with is the Osaka dialect, but even then I gotta pay attention for how characters say certain things. (Semi-related but I think foreigners speaking Japanese with an accent is very obvious in anime since they exaggerate it so much.)
