Sao took place in 2022 but just like back to the future and flying cars technology has not advanced enough to make something like a nervgear possible.

All I know is that if they try this out today it will surely be riddled with glitches and bugs.

I think in a few years we will see it. We already have the metaverse and also there are companies that are already working on something similar to the nerv gear. And the people that made genshin impact are also working on making a virtual world like sao. I myself am pretty excited for what the future will bring us. We'll just have to wait and see.๐Ÿ˜€

I see Full Dive as a mainstream technology for the public by late 2030s. Nobody is even trying it right now. However, something like the Augma from Ordinal Scale could come in 5 years or so. Apple is releasing an AR headset this year supposedly

Saw someone saying something along these lines on another site.

There are actually technological developments similar to the NervGear right now. You'd be surprised.

Think about it this way: You're a gamer... you like a game that was released on the Oculus. Yet, whether it's because of an anti-social trait or because of plain stubbornness, you are not signed up with Facebook. Therefore, you can't use the Oculus. And you're stuck in reality. Basically SAO in reverse.

Since at least 1999 and the turn of the century and the millennium (but it goes back far further than that to at least 1930s Sci-Fi and I'm sure even examples exist throughout centuries of fiction, just far predating my own time and experience), the future - even the near future of 10 or 20 years from the date of when the fiction is written, has always been portrayed as being leaps ahead in these incredibly unrealistic ways that when the actual date arrives not only haven't happened, but aren't even close to actually happening. I remember in preparation for the turning into a new millennium for the first time in 1,000 years (obviously), Y2K and all that, there was such fanfare of what it would mean, as if in literally 2000 or at least by 2005 or 2010, people would now all have flying cars or hover cars, be wearing silver space suits and eating freeze dried food. Maybe if you condensed what may happen over the course of the next 1,000 years (from 2000 A.D. to 3000 A.D) as if it was all just going to happen overnight.

But it's also true that when you're living through the moving time you don't see the changes as obvious and apparent, just as you don't see obvious signs of your own aging or that of other people you see every day or frequently compared to someone you don't see for years.
