A folktale commonly translated as "Battle of the Monkey and the Crab" (or simply "The Crab and the Monkey") becomes the basis for this episode. Why? I have no idea, other than the characters are trying to complete a set of See/Hear/Speak No Evil monkey artifacts. The story is about the revenge against a simian trickster by the children of a crab that he killed. Helping them are an usu (the mortar used for pounding rice into mochi), a chestnut, a bee, and... cow dung.

Where was the cow dung?!

Monkey Crab Battle is a famous fable, like Momotaro, where the hero recruits loyal subordinates or helpers who help him triumph. This archetype is also seen in European fairy tales like Puss in Boots or The Death of Koschei the Deathless.

The main theme is filial piety, as the Crab's children avenge her murder by Monkey with the help of the different things they recruit. The reunification of the 3 monkeys is framed as an act of filial piety by Sataka-san. Recruiting Arakawa-san and Yamanoka-san is like the Crab's children getting helpers to help them win.

As for the cow dung, the helpers vary depending on which part of the country the story was collected from. In Kansai, the helper that makes Monkey slip is oil, which corresponds to the deep-frying.

Makes a lot more sense. Thank you for pointing that out!
