I'm seeking anime that are calm and lighthearted. I'd like great character development. When i think of lighthearted anime... i'll jus' give you some examples based on my completed list so you can get an idea of what I've liked in the past:

Orange
Fruits Basket
Azumanga Daioh
Interviews With Monster Girls * a very favorite of mine*
Housekishou Richard-shi no Nazo Kantei
Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san

I have no opposition to most genres. I don't mind romance, i'm trying to expand my Slice of Life and Romance titles.

Maybe not "calm" per se, but I think you should give Ojamajo Doremi a shot for light-hearted character development!!

Hanayamata is another underrated light-hearted pick I'd recommend.

An interesting request. At first when you mentioned desiring series that keep pretty tonally lighthearted but have "great character development" it sounded like something of a contradiction for me since I usually associate the most lighthearted series with stuff with static to minimal character development, but after your examples given, I think I know what you mean.

Excluding anything already mentioned,

- Mahoutsukai no Yome
- Aishiteruze Baby
- Sora no Woto
- Hanasaku Iroha
- Natsume Yuujinchou
- The Aquatope on White Sand (still presently airing)
- Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou
- Eve no Jikan
- Houkago Saikoro Club
- Gin no Saji
- Kyoto Teramachi Sanjou no Holmes
- Mujin Wakusei Survive
- Somali to Mori no Kamisama
- Ikoku Meiro no Croisee the Animation
- Super Cub

Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu
Flying Witch
My Roommate is a Cat
Ascendance of a Bookworm
Servant x Service
Gakuen Babysitters
Natsume Yuujinchou
Yuru Camp
Kimi to Boku
Yotsuiro Biyori
Kuragehime
Tanaka-kun is Always Listless
Chihayafuru
Non Non Biyori
Wasteful Days of High School Girls
Akagami no Shirayuki-hime
Denki-gai
The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent

Since you listed Orange and Fruits Basket i take it you don't mind drama/tearjerkers? If so, i think you should try out these:

Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari + the sequel Wakakusa Monogatari: Nan to Jo-sensei

Barakamon

Cheer Danshi!!

Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue.

Full Moon wo Sagashite

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi

Kobato.

Oda Cinnamon Nobunaga

Ojamajo Doremi + the sequels Sharp, Motto! and Dokkaan!

Sugar Sugar Rune

Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru + the sequel Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru

Uchi Tama?! Uchi no Tama Shirimasen ka?

Yes! Precure 5 + the sequel Yes! Precure 5 GoGo!

Check out Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid if you haven't already, and also check out Wotakoi. Those are my standard for low-stakes feel-good shows that still have real quality and heart behind them.

A show that was made to be exactly what you're asking for is The Helpful Fox Senko-san . The show is literally morphine for the mind and soul. Some other good ones are:

All of K-on! is amazing and super chill, one of the best
Yuru Camp is up there with K-on! for it's chilled out nature, plus, it's pretty to look at!
Spice and Wolf is a legendary romance anime for good reason! Above all else, I can't recommend this one more highly. The show is pretty calm for the most part which is a bonus for you.

I'd realistically say look at my watched list and browse my 7-10's as it seems we have strikingly similar taste in anime based on how we ranked the things we've both seen.

The atmosphere in it which perfectly captures the whole fantasy and storytelling in it .
It's atmosphere is beautiful and calming yet haunting or horrifying.
Well there are some other things which makes mushishi too incredible but I love its atmosphere most because I don't remember a series whose atmosphere was this perfect for its setting .
