This manga should have ended after Sawada died, or after Nao gave birth and they all figured out 'the answer to life'. Kai's involvement in the plot is contrived and predictable at this point. I don't understand why Sei is suddenly the focal point for characters like Ryou and Kai; Sei has his own faults that have negatively impacted himself and his village. He's not the infallible figure that Mori is trying to portray him as.

Also, Ryou's actions make no sense. For over 100 chapters we haven't seen him think about or mention his dead girlfriend after he rejoined the group. He tried to escape, came back depressed because of his past trauma, and then seemingly recovered. So it's nonsensical to have him breakdown at the wedding and exercise extremely poor judgement by letting Kai out. It lacks all common sense and feels like Mori is stringing us along for some milquetoast ending.

Relative to the wasteland that is mainstream manga, Suicide Island is pretty great. But that doesn't mean it's immune to criticism.

Not anymore. It USED to be pretty great, but the manga's quality in the last ~30 chapters has been declining rapidly, and we've gotten to the point where it's nearly unreadable, just read whatever chapters 159-161 are supposed to be (you can probably go further back but these 3 are exceptionally terrible).

The writing has gotten so juvenile and cliche that it's hard to believe that the same author also wrote Holyland. I'd like to believe that he lost multiple bets and was forced to expand the manga by 20 chapters for the sake of it.

This last arc is bad, you'll get no argument from me there. But I don't think the last 30 chapters were especially terrible. The plot point of Sawada and its resolution was handled mostly well even though it felt drawn out. Real wars are typically decided over several battles and Mori did a good job showing that attrition. It was spotty writing though because he tried painting Sawada's sociopolitical ideals as being nuanced, but it ended up being half baked.

There are several other areas where the writing leaves a lot to be desired:


  • the absence of STIs and pregnancy (Nao should have gotten pregnant much earlier if the story was more realistic)
  • the hamfisted expositions that are given to characters who die in the next chapter or even in the very same chapter resulting in a lazy use of foreshadowing (ex. Minoru the farmer kid)
  • and the one-dimensionality of some characters that results from Mori's emphasis on the idea that 'everyone can contribute' (ex. Ryou is only good at playing the peacemaking leader, Sei is only good at hunting, Ryuu is only good at being a pragmatic enforcer).



What parts of the story did you find that signalled a rapid decline other than the last arc?

I think this manga's flaws always ran pretty deep; the characters aren't really well written, there's a lot of repetition going on be it in dialogue, the circumstances under which something happens, the dynamic between characters or their motivations, etc. In the earlier chapters this isn't a problem obviously as you've just been introduced to everyone and given the circumstances, you expect them to act irrationally while they struggle to survive which is a great contrast to their life before the island. After that, the focus is mostly on Sei (and after a while Liv), so the tidbits you get about other characters (who are all different enough to remain interesting) make for a good read nonetheless.

However, once everyone settles down, the problems start to show. When Sei and Liv were away you didn't have to deal with the other characters, but once they return you can tell Mori didn't have any ideas or inspiration left other than the drive to close out Sawada's arc and finish the story, only he wanted to stretch the manga for some reason. Most characters, for example, act like NPCs in some videogame where they repeat themselves over and over or make the same mistakes until they're scolded/saved/they die. Then, you have some weird writing decisions like Kai (his entire existence could be considered one honestly) who people at the school know is probably worse than Sawada and yet let him do his thing time and time again. Another thing that bothered me a lot was what you mention in your second point, not as much for the obvious foreshadowing, but for the fact that every character feels like their purpose is to do something and then die off for cheap drama so that they can be used as "X didn't die for nothing" material every 2 chapters.

Finally, I already kind of touched on this but a LOT of pages are dedicated to things like "I have to kill, but is it really ok to kill? What about X? No I have to do it! But no I can't... But I have to" which really ramped up in the last 30 chapters or so (I mean, they are going to war but still, at that point). It's probably reasonable to draw out a scene of doubt like this when a character encounters such a problem for the first time, but for the second, third or fourth time around you either accept something or you don't. This manga was never perfect but the genuinely great scenes always more than made up for its shortcomings. I think this isn't the case anymore.
