THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
First showings of the movies have hit theaters in Japan now. Just came back from the screening of it in Fukuoka. Honestly? Absolutely fantastic fucking adaptation, they did so much justice to my favorite arc it's not even funny. The art was consistently good and reached some fantastic peaks too, the animation was consistently good too but at THOSE key moments (you know the ones) they go above and fucking beyond. I'll spoil it now for those who are worried: No, Bondrewd isn't CGI and neither is Reg in berserk mode.

Utterly fantastic adaptation, Kevin Penkin's score contiuously gave me chills in the theater and amplified already powerful scenes to another degree. The voice acting was also fantastic too, man just remembering shit like Prushka's backstory scene and the last scenes of the movie gives me chills (not gonna lie I cried at least once, my favorite page was adapted so damn well it hurt my heart immensely.)

Can't comment too much on how well the dialogue was handled but from my limited Japanese I can say they did a pretty good job. Overall I'd give this a solid 9.5 and will wait till the movie is subbed a couple months down to give my complete thoughts. The screening was fantastic and the cute Maruruk short at the beginning was fun too. Definitely a great adaptation of my favorite arc.

How was the scorpio slaughter?
In manga i had very little clue what was going on in that scene.

Fantastically done, it had some very fluid animation and the gore wasn't censored at all, there's one really damn cool rotation shot during it that stuck with me among many other really great bits of animation during the movie.

Prushka backstory ie how she grew up with Bondrewd was shown same as in the manga ie just after "cardridge moment" or somehow different?

To future watchers,
There are no extra scenes after the credits, unfortunately (only a "to be continued").

i like bondage Maruruk.

Honestly though, I'd give the movie a 9. They stayed true to the source material whose plot alone is so good already. No censoring also.

Art quality is good but the animation isn't as great as I expected and I could definitely tell they made the movie with a tight budget (or time). Too much camera panning. First fight was meh, I expected to see more from Sparagmos. Second fight onwards though, is amazing and emotional.

Overall it's still a great adaptation, don't let my nitpick ruin your will to go watching the movie

Yeah. If given the choice, I think I'm leaning towards S2.
They might have been able to flesh out Prushka more like they did for Mitty if it were a series...

I haven’t seen it yet but I was listening to the score and Penkin seriously topped the shows OST. This is perhaps the best anime score I have ever heard, atleast on par with the likes of Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, and Hishaishi’s works.

Watched it at the european premiere, i liked it but didn't love it though.

I wished it was as a series instead because i just feel it's not fleshed enough particularly the new character Prushka.
I didn't feel as much emotion as i did when i saw season 1. I also feel the music selection was much better in the series and i liked the arc of exploring more than this arc.

also definitely too much sexual jokes...

it's good but i'd rather have a season 2 next than a movie

The manga was the same way.

There will be even more sexual stuff in the next movie/season/whatever it is.

I'm in mixed feelings about movie. The first season of anime was a great improvement over manga, a lot of people hated slow pacing, but I liked it. More exploration of the layers, a lot of original material helped to flesh out world, which was barebones in manga, more time to feel emotional moments and just think about beuaty and horrors of the Abyss.

I expected the same treatment for Bondrewd's arc, but movie feels even more rushed than manga. A lot of emotional scenes lost their weight because everything is happening too fast. It jumps from one scene to another without a break, some scenes are molded together and you have awkward switches from cute girls doing cute things to Bondrewd being Bondrewd, than cute girls and their hamster are cute again, but minute later it goes full horror. I checked manga and as much as it was fast paced, it wasn't like this.

If I was anime only I don't think I would like Bondrewd half as much as manga reader. In manga he was creepy, insane, merciless lovecraftian monster, but also passionate and caring. He could look like a nightmare fuel, but also like a total goofball. In movie he is static, he barely moves in non-fight scenes, animated version of him feels way less lively than black and white silent bunch of pictures from manga. Morikawa has a great voice, but he often sounds too lazy and monotonous. And what kind of genius decided to cut his backstory from movie?

Movie is good for fight scenes and might be a great cryporn, all thanks to Penkin's OST. Green Mitty was handled a bit better than manga's counterpart, at least she doesn't move her giant bare tits right in your face during emotional moments. I still don't care about her, mainly because I got fed up with abuse of break the cutie trope.
There is your grain of salt from manga reader.

I disagree with virtually everything you said, and I was able to watch it in theaters in France. It was not rushed in the least, if anything a few scenes were dragged out more than in the manga. Especially the ending one. Bondrewd also had an enormous presence in the movie, often made towering over the main characters. The movie made me appreciate him as an antagonist even more.

Morikawa is a perfect voice for him. He's somebody that has split his soul too many times to count. Having his voice show a wider range of emotion than it did would be a huge disservice towards the source material. If you mistake for laziness you really should try to watch more anime. The transitions between the scenes were also fine.

I assume you watched the newly released, unsubbed camrip. Most of your problems with the movie doesn't at all fit what I saw, most of them just being based on honestly dumb reasoning like "I didn't like X character because I didn't like cute stuff".

It just seems like you try to make mountains out of molehills. Which I find it sad that you let such a pessimistic view ruin something for what it is. You even created an account just so you could basically whine.

Hopefully when you watch something in the future you try to watch it more objectively and give a more honest approach towards it rather than the exaggerated whining in this post.

huh, so this was only one arc. good movie overall. same great animation quality, and some awesome ambient ost. was pleasantly surprised with the amount of action, especially during the fights between Reg and Bondrewd and how packed it was with dynamism

the story was alright, i guess. they've done a good job expanding Bondrewd's madness with various disturbing scenes during the movie, Prushka's character was a bit lackluster tho for me, personally. still enjoyed this arc story for what it was

looking forward to season 2

A thing that really bothers me is how they try to circumvent the effects of the curse.
Like when they escape from Bondrewd's dungeon and try to trap him, Riko can for some reason climb to the top of the nest without any side effects from the curse, and just the escape where they observe the dungeon is again in a way higher altitude.
Then Meinya can for some fucking reason help circumvent it aswell.

read manga and was confused about that as well. how did riko and prushka find reg and nanachi? by going up the staircase?

however, meinya isnt affected since it isnt human. idk if that was said in the movie but this was stated in the manga

I feel very mixed about the movie, anime was 10/10 but the movie is a 7. I havent read the manga.

Things I didnt like:

How completely useless Riko is (at least in the anime her lore knowledge came in handy), the bunny girl serves no purpose, and Bondrewd is a strange villain who never seemed scary.

Things I liked:

They also ramped up the edgyness and dark stuff to 11, and even put in some lewd jokes. Fight scenes were good. Finally they do the last dive.

Overall seemed like a spinoff arc, since the main show to me was more about exploring the environment and fighting against it. Having a monstrous human villain was boring. I hope the rest of the story is back to fighting the environment and they wrap up the story soon.

as a manga reader; riko is useless i agree. nanachi (bunny girl) is a companion bc main plot is riko searching for her mother. bondrewd is like a hot psychopath.. you wanna hate him but damn he is amazing.
this arc supposed to be about how to craft white whistles. thats why it feels like spinoff. which makes me question hw lyza got white whistle before marrying torka.

by the way, where did you watch it? theaters are closed and i couldnt find blu-ray online

bonedrewd truly a monster among monsters in anime.

i think he earned a place in the second place spot of top ten villains in my book.
