You may want to give Whisper of the Heart a shot if you don't mind a romance film recommendation!

Here's a few more recommendations:

Howl's Moving Castle - here's another romance movie from Studio Ghibli—give this a shot too!!
Air - this is a gorgeously made anime with a couple of laughs and lots of feels. i suggest you give it a shot.
Sailor Moon - the 90s anime is a classic magical girl anime, and unless you count the iconic transformation scenes as fanservice, this is probably a go-to for romance. however, the original 90s anime is 200 episodes... if you don't want a series that long, i suggest Sailor Moon Crystal—it's not only shorter and straight to the point without filler, but it's also closer to the original manga.
Princess Tutu - here's another great magical girl show with romance. again, like with Sailor Moon, unless you count the transformations as fanservice, you might find lots to enjoy here (the transformations are much shorter than in Sailor Moon though).

Kotoha no Niwa, well, this one is a drama/SoL/romance movie. One of the most beautiful movie ^^

Orange, a drama/romance anime. What I like the most is it seems realistic.

Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san. The 2nd season especially had some of the best romance I've seen an anime in a while.
Cross Game. Yes, it's a sports anime, but has a ton of slice of life moments that build the romance between the pair of childhood friend characters.

Step one: press or click the anime tab on the tp of the screen and go to Anime Search
Step two: press on the 'drama' genre
Step three: press ctrl/⌘+f and type 'romance'.
Step four: scroll down and look through all of them where the word romance is highlighted.

Some of the ones I recommend are:

Gosick < (watch this one)

Eikoku Koi Monogatari Emma

Romance in a realistic historical setting with two very different seasons (I prefered first more)
Zero sexualisation of characters.

Hachimitsu to Clover
This is actually a Sol and romance is not the main focus, still you might find what you are looking for in there. Though reducing this show to romance doesn't do it justice.
