Realizing the meaning of anime, gave me another interesting topic to discuss about with my friends at school.

I think I was introduced to the concept by coming across a documentary about it, that made me highly curious, but for some time I couldn't see any because this was before you could get video off the internet, I could only see things broadcast on terrestrial television, and it wasn't.

I've always preferred eastern media to western media for some reason, been a Toku nut all my life for instance. idk how I found anime beyond maybe looking back at Digimon and discovering the difference once I had the capability to research this stuff, but the first anime to really catch my eye and the first that I really liked was Kill la Kill, which I somehow found at Disney. I might have found it through memes but idk, I was kind of a lowkey anime fan for a while but didn't really get into it until I watched Dragon Maid as a result of Digibro's videos on it (found him by his Kill la Kill videos) and I've been watching ever since

Why don’t we become monsters and really mess up this awful world? Just destroy until there’s no more evil, no more sadness, no more anything…
Wouldn’t that be great?

It goes Pokemon (although not really) then a few late-era Toonami shows then One Piece. After that I started watching more shows like Kill la Kill and Sword Art Online and Ghost in the Shell and Black Lagoon.

My younger brother was into anime well before I was. He was really into Naruto so, as every older brother does, I decided that I hated Naruto and I started watching One Piece. That was when I was a teenager in the late 2000s. Even earlier, he watched Yu-Gi-Oh. I, rightfully, decided that I did not like Yu-Gi-Oh and went with Pokemon instead. At that point, though, I didn't know what anime was and I didn't watch many of them besides Pokemon. I was more into cartoons like Avatar, Teen Titans, Samurai Jack, Clone Wars (pre and post-'08), etc.

I am the say as you in the matter that I grew up watching Pokemon and a few select others like Deltora Quest but back then I only knew them as cartoons. Once I turned 10 I became aware of the difference and started watching anime like Sword Art Online, Hunter x Hunter and my passion expanded from there.

I already watched a few popular shounen+magical girl shows, but didn't kow it was anime at the time. I knew about anime from this video:

It was made by Mark Crilley around '09, but i watched it beginning of '10. I was trying to find a vid on how to draw eyes, but the realistic ones imitated me, so I chose this for its simple style.I got introduced to the concept of anime by the comment section, while being exposed to manga by the title of that video.

So a double combo. which I doubt any here had this experience too

My fist anime interaction was when I was at a friends house and me and my friend started to play on the console. He said he has a new game he go for free (I think) and that we should try it. The game was Naruto Shippuden.

At a young age (around 6-10), I used to love Pokemon but my parents never let me watch it. I used to wake up super early just to watch it on TV. Eventually I got the Pokedex book and I would spend hours drawing Pokemon. Unfortunately, I never did get to play the games. I didn't even know what anime was at the time.

As I got older (probably around age 12-14), I learned what anime was just from socializing at school but I had no interest.

Continuing to get older, I began to think anime was for people who lived in the parent's basement and I thought they were essentially the outcasts/losers of society.

In the winter of 2017, I saw my friend who was a history fanatic and would never be considered a weeb playing Doki Doki Literature Club. Because it was so unexpected of him, I talked to him about it. He was very vague and told me just to try the game myself. Skeptically I did and I actually got into playing the whole dating sim thing. (My choice was Yuri) Then the actual game happened and I was shocked and drawn in more. After this nothing happened for a while.

Fall of 2018, I was extremely bored of all the video games I had so I decided to check out Reddit for stuff about DDLC. The main subreddit was pretty active which was cool, but then I found each individual doki's specific subreddit. I realized that my favorite doki (Yuri) had a subreddit but it was practically dead. So then I decided to create Yurism.

Around a couple months later (still Fall of 2018 though), I found a meme about My Hero Academia. I realized I had seen the same character in several other memes so I looked around and found the anime series. Since I had nothing else to do, I decided to check it out. I got hooked on it and then I began my downward spiral into watching more and more anime (as well as more trash).

If I had a choice would I do it again? Hell yes. Anime gave me something where I can find so many diverse premises for shows and I actually feel emotions when I see something good.
Do I regret it? Also yes. I wasted a lot of time and I probably will continue to waste even more time. And in the near future, I will probably also lose a lot of money at conventions.

And finally, is my opinion of weebs the same? Sort of, I agree that we are all degenerate trash but I can see why it's enjoyable. Plus there's some actually great shows that are way better than anything from any other medium I saw.

I had known about anime for a long time as I had a couple of friends who enjoyed it and cosplayed as well, but I never tried it myself except for gibli which I barely knew was anime. I did remember thinking those friends were cool tho which is kind of different to most people who look down upon anime fans.
One day I was at a friends place and she talked about AOT when she got the brilliant idea to force me to watch it. I was hesitant at first but when I saw that ''arm episode'' I got really into it. She kept adding animes for me to watch to my tv show time tracker that she thought I would enjoy and the rest is history.

It was in 2014 and I was really into South Park. I joined a group chat like fandom of South Park on kik and so I met this guy named Jonah. Jonah told me to watch Soul Eater and he linked me a website where I watched the whole thing in like 2 days. The rest is history. Technically I watched Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z but those were cartoons at the time.

In high school I used to borrow books from friends - some of them were manga. But I actually started to read comic books on daily basis when I was a student in a big city. The library there was full of manga and graphic novels I couldn't afford to buy. I watch anime when I'm so tired after work that I cannot read anymore.

I've had encounters with anime my entire life. Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Yu-gi-oh, Beyblade, Bakugan, etc. I even remember my friend getting me a Naruto and Dragon Ball DS game for christmas, although I didn't know anything about the two at the time.

I was first formally introduced to anime when I was 11.
I had been looking for drawing apps on my tablet, and came across a Manga drawing app. On the app I found two dudes named L and Light. Under their names, it listed where their from and I just happened to remember it.
Later, maybe a month or two later, I was talking to my friend on the phone. When I asked what she was doing, she said she was watching Death Note.
I had heard of it from the app, and since she was watching it, I decided to check it out. I searched it up on youtube and watched it all in about a week(probably).

I don't remember how I found out that it was anime, but I probably found out through the comments. Either that or a google search on shows like Death Note.

Mine is quite similar to yours. Basically, like most kids it was TV that introduced me to anime. And instead of Animax it was a channel called AXN. At that time AXN aired nothing but anime. It was even dubbed.

I knew about "anime" since the first Dragon Ball, yet I didn't really bother. Many MANY years later I met a person named "Gin" that had a really awesome aesthetic profile picture, he changed them frequently and I was really fascinated by them, so I gave anime a try and I fell in love.

1. accidently finding hentai when I was 12 led to my knowledge of the medium.
2. finding and watching To Love Ru led me to realize that it wasn't all just porn, but it was pretty much still porn for a 12 y/o
3. my brother had me watch Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood with him. That's pretty much where I understood what anime was. After that I figured out netflix had anime and watched shows like attack on titan and Magi. Good times

I got into anime by watching it on TV when I was younger. The first anime that I remember watching was Ninja Scroll on a cable channel that doesn't exist anymore. I think I was like 5 or 6. I then watched other (inappropriate for my age) anime like Blood Curse of the Yoma, Darkside Blues, Sol Bianca, Black Magic M-66, GunSmith Cats, Blue Seed...and then somehow found age appropriate anime and then the original Toonami started airing and I watched that.

I knew about anime back as a kid but mostly watched whatever anime was on TV. As I got to high school, I did get into anime a bit with watching one non-main stream anime per year.

I really got into anime sometime when I started my time in college when I found a VN called NekoPara (this was back in 2015.) I guess in the end, cat girls is what got me into anime.

Well I had watched a little bit of DBZ as kid and a few years ago I was rather infatuated with the Danganronpa series, but my overall attitude towards anime was VERY negative.

Then in December 2017, I got really bored and decided to watch the adaptation of the first Danganronpa visual novel as well as the Hope/Despair Arcs where I discovered that anime was something I could potentially enjoy. From there I watched a few animes like Blend S, SAO, and Cowboy Bebop; but it wasn't until Toradora that I truly got into anime. Toradora was honestly an eye opener for how amazing anime could be, and is 100% the reason I started loving it. Immediately after Toradora I watched Sakurasou and KonoSuba and those two just kept the ball that Toradora started rolling and now here I am a little over a year later having watched way too much anime lmao

Toonami, but I didn't distinguish it from other cartoons, I thought they were all cartoons.

Thinking back, even in college, I didn't really distinguish what was 'anime'. I think I really just thought of it as eastern cartoons and they were cool. Like Escaflowne, Berserk. Just really cool to watch.

It wasn't until I graduated and I think Netflix had Puella Magi Madoka Magica that I said, "Oh snap, what is this, this is amazing!?"

Then I started to define it as anime. That's when I suddenly got a taste for anime in general. I started reading magazines about it and stuff, and then Kill La Kill came out. I've been getting more and more into it since then.

Before Puella, I remembered watching Ghost in the Shell SAC, Akira and stuff in middle school. Since I've actually started spending time focusing on anime, my life has gotten infinitely better. I like anime so much more than most western entertainment.

I still watch movies and everything else, but anime is a core part of my diet for the past 8-9 years.

Free streaming of any show ever made on the internet and plugging my computer into my TV made my taste in anime basically explode though. Before then it had always been extremely difficult to access what you wanted to watch.

My library used to have like, a couple of bum anime DVDs, that was it.

two of my friends were talking about this series for a couple of days, and they didn't sop, so i asked what is the show they were talking about and what is the plot, the show was attack on titan and the plot seemed good..it was a good while since i've watched anything interesting at all, so AOT really captivated me and i started looking up other series. funny thing is, i had watched death note a year and half and kimi no nawa about couple of months before them telling me about anime, but they were both called "animation" and not anime so even though i wanted more both times, i didn't really know what to look for.
