I seem to recall relatively recently that this show had a higher score than 8.32. If anyone can tell me what it was before it finished airing that'd be great and what was it's highest.

Yeah, I do too. I feel like it wasn't that long ago and I was trying to figure out when it happened. Was it after it finished the last episode or before? I definitely recall it being around 8.5 ish. Possibly around 8.58. I asked cause I came to check the score and suddenly I saw it was much lower than I remembered it being so I was hoping maybe someone could tell me if they know around when it started going down. Did it gradually drop or was it pretty sudden?

According to the MAL score progression club, the highest the show reached was 8.59 in it's early weeks, then it went down as the show went into the second half. It has dropped quite a bit since finishing, from 8.46 to what it is now.

It went down because of bunch of triggered people, that too much self insert themselves with the female MC that was sold as a slave.

How do I actually find the show? Is there a way to search it and how far does this stuff go back?

To Swagernator why would the score go down because she was sold as a slave? That shit happened in the first episode if that was why it went down it would have happened far sooner. Clearly people didn't mind that she was sold at an auction to a somewhat creepy guy who said he was going to marry her. Surely there must have been a more specific reason unrelated to something like that?

I don't believe such people were vocal enough for that to be the case. If anything it's probably the content of the show itself, be it often weak characterization outside of Chise or Elise, stilted tonal transitions and some question pacing in particular episodes.

Episode 19 is especially egregious with tone and pacing, too many emotions, with an apprehension of letting things linger. It goes from horror, humor, horror, humor and then drama. It doesn't do a decent job of balancing the drama between the humor. We cold open to a very dark and disturbing moment then transition to an incoherent drinking scene, right before a rough cut to a dark dream sequence that is followed by another comedic scene, albeit that does have a purpose and sets up the following scene well.

Although that episode is just fresh in my mind and I'm enjoying the series (this episode included) regardless. I believe the second cour is weaker than the first as well, and that tends to reflect in the score of shows from my experience. Either way, I'm just putting my opinion out there to maybe help give a reason as to why the score may have dropped.

not a strange drop, the last part of the show was objectively unacceptable and the rest is pretty average with highs and lows

Well, I don't know if I said it was strange. I don't recall saying that it was. But anyway the reason I asked is I haven't seen the show for quite some time and I was quite surprised it had seemingly (at least from my point of view as I hadn't been checking it's score too often) pretty much tanked in score. (I mean if you consider a .20 percent as a pretty steep drop which I do. In my mind, a 8.3 to an almost 8.6 is a pretty big difference in rating. Though 8.32 is still nothing to scoff at. I realize that's not a terrible score and plenty of really good anime are scored less on here. (Elfen Lied is below an 8 and it's one of my favorite animes. It's not for everyone granted, it's unrelentingly dark and fucked up and NOT for the faint of heart. But I consider it a pretty amazing story, a lot better than many other higher rated anime on here even if the manga is MUCH better in terms of details and just general storytelling. (The anime was made before the manga finished so they had to create an anime original ending.) Though I guess they didn't HAVE to. They could have probably waited for a second season to adapt the rest of the manga more faithfully. Though I've heard it said before that waiting to continue a series is not a very profitable or marketable thing to do in Japan for most anime. Don't fully remember where but this was an answer to why anime don't just take breaks and come back instead of filler. Particularly long running shounen anime like One Piece and at the time Naruto cause it wasn't finished yet as it only finished airing a year and about 5 weeks ago. It used Bleach as an example saying Bleach ended in 2012 for the anime and that the manga was in its final arc around that time. It finished the arc in 2016 so it could have come back soon after theoretically. Though the person said something to the effect it costs them more money to wait to air the show at a later date cause they'd have to repay for its time slot and there's a bunch of logistical things preventing it from being something done regularly though at the moment it escapes me what they were. Anyway, that's off topic so I'll get back to the point. I have only seen like 4 episodes of the show and its rating seemed to be around the same as Violet Evergarden and was one of THE highest rated anime airing at the time when I first looked it up on here back in around December which was when I last watched an episode of the show. But even more recently than that I still recall its score being much higher than it is currently so yeah I was just trying to find out what had happened to change the score so much in such a short time. As an aside as I've now made clear I've not seen the show fully for anyone who replies after this comment try and keep that in mind when and if you choose to answer it. I'd prefer to not have huge spoilers that would ruin the show when I get the chance to sit down and watch it some more. Thankfully I didn't see too big a spoiler on your reply so thanks for that. It's best to be vague as to why it's gone downhill in case someone hasn't seen it. And not just for me, if someone else happens to see this thread at any point and hasn't seen it'd be best we don't have any heavy spoilers. I know some people think it's other people's responsibility to avoid spoilers but personally, I think if it can be avoided and the person hasn't directly asked for spoilers to use caution. There's a feature on MAL to hide spoilers like on reddit so please do use it so people who want to read spoilers can but if people who don't can avoid them. It's pretty easy just type [spoiler] and then out a slash in the second one like this [/.spoiler] (I added the period after the slash so it would properly show up and not actually turn into a spoiler hider. When you use it DON'T put the period there. Hopefully, this information helps anyone who reads my comment or thread and wasn't aware this was a feature or how to use it. And if you did know that's good but I'm putting it here in case someone else doesn't so we can practice proper etiquette and not spoil stuff for other people. To be honest I don't know if it's a rule on MAL or considered the standard practice but if it's not it definitely should be in my opinion. :)

People didn't understand it with their little shounen brains, so they rated it lowly. Then there is the top rated reviews that are retarded as well.

How is it a shounen manga? The vibe to me feels far more like a Shoujo at least the romance does. I've never once seen a shounen with romance as the main focus. Sure there's magic and maybe some action too. But overall I can't think of many shounen anime with a female protagonist that focuses on romance as it's primary selling point. Maybe I'm just so used to battle Shounen though. Still, female protagonists probably are rarer in Shounen.

1. Shounen is a demographic, not a genre. Colloquially it is sometimes referred to as a genre, so it's an easy mistake.

2. There are elements found in Shoujou present in The Ancient Magus' Bride, yes, but you can also see the humor and art-style are more reminiscent of Shounen published manga (FMA comes to mind).

Shounen/Seinen/Shoujo/Josei are demographics not genre, they don't specify anything about the plot or tone of the series. DeadTube and Yotsuba& are shounen manga and they have nothing in common beside shounen magazines.

I realize this is a superrr late reply, but I didn't know it was there, and the forums were down for so long so I didn't get around to replying to it. I'm aware those are demographics not genres, but they tend to be genre-based to fit that demographic. Shounen tends to be action-centric, with male heroes. Seinen tends to be much darker and edgier and generally features much more mature themes. (Think Tokyo Ghoul, and Berserk as pretty good examples of a Seinen manga.) Whereas Shoujo and Josei tend to be more female lead, with male supporting characters and love interests. This may not be ALWAYS the case, of course not. But it is the general rule from what I've seen outside of some shows that subvert your expectations like Madoka Magicka which LOOKS like it's going to be a Shoujo magical girl anime, but then becomes much darker and doesn't tend to feature romance as prominently like say Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura does. There's, of course, going to be exceptions to the rules.

People forgot all about this in AOTY discussions for 2018 and it's super tragic. Kill La Kill had the same kind of airing order, Aired: Oct 4, 2013 to Mar 28, 2014, and it was counted as a 2014 anime, or should have been.

Aren't we supposed to count it for the year it ended? This was also nearly the best anime of the year. The fantasy stuff was so original. Everybody liked the OVA, why would you turn on the proper adaptation?

I still haven't gotten around to finishing this. I tried to start it up again pretty recently but ended up not getting far. I find when a show isn't easily available dubbed on official sites, I'm more likely to not finish them, no matter how much I was enjoying them. Though to be fair, I have a bad habit of almost finishing shows and then getting distracted or bored and then not finishing them, even if it's been years. And then once you get to that point it's too much of a chore to go back and watch them because I can't just pick up where I left off anymore. I hardly remember the plot of the shows I've been neglecting for years. Like, I almost finished watching Blood+ and Eureka Seven way back in 2015 when I first started getting into anime. That year alone I watched a significant portion of the total anime I've seen, and ever since I've been unable to watch it at my old pace. But if I watched them now, I'd have to restart the whole thing again because I can only vaguely remember the plot of those shows now. Which has put me off finishing way too many shows, even if I really loved watching them in the past. But I'll probably try and give this another go soon when I've finished a few more shows on my list.
