Mississippi Prom Canceled After Lesbian Date Request

A northern Mississippi school district decided Wednesday not to host a high school prom after a lesbian student demanded she be able to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.

The Itawamba County school district's policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex. The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi had given the district until Wednesday to change that policy and allow 18-year-old Constance McMillen to escort her girlfriend, who is also a student, to the dance on April 2.

Instead, the school board met and issued a statement announcing it wouldn't host the event at Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton, "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events."

The statement didn't mention McMillen or the ACLU. When asked by The Associated Press if McMillen's demand led to the cancellation, school board attorney Michele Floyd said she could only reference the statement.

"It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors," district officials said in the statement. "However, at this time, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Itawamba County School District, after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students."

The ACLU said a school policy banning same-sex prom dates violated McMillen's constitutional rights.

Kristy Bennett, legal director for the ACLU of Mississippi, said the district was trying to avoid the issue.

"But that doesn't take away their legal obligations to treat all the students fairly," Bennett said. "On Constance's behalf, this is unfair to her. All she's trying to do is assert her rights."

Bennett said she wouldn't allow McMillen to comment on Wednesday, saying "she's still trying to process" the district's actions. Calls to McMillen's cell phone went unanswered.

Itawamba County is a rural area of about 23,000 people in north Mississippi near the Alabama state line. It borders Pontotoc County, Miss., where more than a decade ago school officials were sued in federal court over their practice of student-led intercom prayer and Bible classes.

Anna Watson, a 17-year-old junior at the high school, was looking forward to the prom, especially since the town's only hotspot is the bowling alley, she said.

"I am a little bummed out about it. I guess it's a decision that had to be made. Either way someone was going to get disappointed – either Constance was or we were," Watson said. "I don't agree with homosexuality, but I can't change what another person thinks or does."

Other students are on McMillen's side.

McKenzie Chaney, 16, said she wasn't planning to attend the prom, but "it's kind of ridiculous that they can't let her wear the tuxedo and it all be over with."

A Feb. 5 memo to students laid out the criteria for bringing a date to the prom, and one requirement was that the person must be of the opposite sex.

The ACLU said McMillen approached school officials shortly before the memo went out because she knew same-sex dates had been banned in the past. The ACLU said district officials told McMillen she and her girlfriend wouldn't be allowed to arrive together, that she would not be allowed to wear a tuxedo, and that she and her girlfriend might be asked to leave if their presence made any other students "uncomfortable."

McMillen said she feared she would be thrown out of the prom because "we do live in the Bible Belt."

That is a ridiculous policy.

But...bible belt and all that.

I seem to recall my high school having much the same policy. Only opposite-sex dates and sex-appropriate attire. And, yeah, Bible belt here too. Georgia.

We had a guy make the statement he intended to wear a dress...the next day a school wide announcement was made that no one would be allowed in if they did not attend in sex-appropriate attire. It was stupid.

What kind of idiot would make such a fuss over something so expected.

Besides, the school didn't make any statements about the prom being cancelled because of that lesbian girl. The way i see it, it's just some idiotic publicity stunt for some bored blockheads who can't find anything better to waste their lives on.

Except the judge ruled it unconstitutional that the school district deny her attendance to prom or that she can't wear a tuxedo and attend with her girlfriend. However, the school has every right if they so choose, to cancel prom.

Not really, I'm generally just a fiscal conservative. From a social standpoint, I'm pretty far from it(besides abortion anyway >_>).

I just find it funny how self-righteous these threads that hate conservatives are. There is quite a lot of hypocrisy involved with it.

It is a big deal. Prom is suppose to be a good time, one of the best moments in highschool, then some fat dyke comes marching in with her ugly girlfriend and they are kissing up on each other and shit. Of course people are going to get grossed out.
The view of gay as something normal is completely wrong.
Keep it behind closed doors don't be bringing that shit to prom. If two gay guys walked in and pulled out their dicks and started butt fucking in my prom myself as would others would probably beat them with in an inch of their life.
The school was thinking of everyone's safety, even though the girl is probably now hated even more than she was before.

I was about to say that I wasn't going to get into the discussion about gay rights because it didn't have to do with the topic, but then I remembered that it did.

You're right. Prom is supposed to be a good time. For everyone. If some stupid homophobes aren't comfortable with seeing two people be happy together, they can look the other way instead of hating people for who they are. Like I don't get grossed out seeing a heterosexual couple shoving their tongues down each other's throats? Apparently, that's okay, but two girls going to prom together isn't.
Keep your damn sexual urges behind closed doors. You do realize that the majority of gays do keep it hidden, because they're afraid of what people might do to them, right? Homosexuals aren't animals, like you believe they are, and see it fit to be exhibitionists in a public school. And I'll laugh when you not only get charged with assault and battery, but with a hate crime. The school was thinking of their fucking Bible-Belt-conservative-conformist ways, not of anyone's safety. Let her be hated, she'll never see those people in a couple of years, anyway.

Goodness, if someone said this at our school they would be completely rejected by the rest of the student body, and the teachers.

Because it's not normal, it would be the equivalent of someone bringing a 8 year old girl to prom and making out with her, or bringing a donkey to the prom and frenching that.

I didn't realize that these two girls were going to walk into the prom, pull out their dicks and start butt fucking each other, but if they were then I may change my view on the matter. And if you don't want to see two girls kissing each other (I don't know why you wouldn't) but if you didn't then look the other way.

You're not the one to decide what's normal. I'm not going into the scientific part of this about how every species has homosexual tendencies. Being homosexual isn't the same thing as rape or beastality. It's just you being to ignorant or hard-headed to see how other people see things or how they feel. Do you think Constance intended for the prom to be canceled?

Yeah I know all about it, there is no 100% percent straight nor is there a 100% gay.
And it is abnormal seeing as only 4% of the world population is gay, it was also classified as a disease before. Can't say that heterosexuality was diagnosed as a psychological disorder before.

How is it different from pedophilia or bestiality? The whole gay platform is you can't control who you love. Can't help but fall in love with a goat.

I'm not saying I have the right to say what's normal. I'm bisexual, and I'm pretty sure I'm not normal. But I'm saying that he shouldn't be saying that it's not normal, just because he doesn't like homosexuals. That's like calling every German a Nazi.

I don't live in Mississippi, so I wouldn't know. There'll always be scandals like this. They already get beat up for it. It doesn't stop anything. Again, I bring up the assault and battery with the added hate crime. Everyone reaps what they sow. There are consequences, but they should be taken to finally get this shit through thick heads.

While he might be right, that quote is misleading because it's missing a vital information about the number of species he investigated. Quick glance at google says 1500, which is nothing compared to the number of species on this planet.

A thought that I've had before was that everyone has homosexual tendencies. But most are just too afraid to show them. Can I see where you got this 4% from? I would like to. Yes, I know that it was classified as a disease before. Back when they were first finding out about homosexuality. Back. There are different situations, genes, and environments that can alter sexuality, I will admit. BUT. You can't change what's happened, either way. Personally, I don't even think that everyone is born gay. Bad situations with men put me in the position I am today.

Homosexuality is a relationship between to consensual people. An eight year old wouldn't go along with this, and a goat really wouldn't give a fuck.

I had read this in a different article than I found that quote in, but I can't find my first article, so I settled with that one. I also said that I wasn't going into the scientific part, so I didn't look into it much. I was using information I had read about long ago, so things get fuzzy. 'Every' was the wrong word. Haste had me put that in there.

Like I said above this, I wasn't planning on going into the scientific part. I apologize for hastily using the wrong word. But the several animals he lists aren't sexual in the first place. I'm talking about sexually active species.

No, I didn't say anything about fear of showing them. I just said that nobody is perfectly gay or straight. What I meant by homosexual tendencies is that a guy might say Justin Timberlake is so fuckable. Or another guy might consider getting a bj from an attractive tranny. It doesn't mean that they want a dick in their mouth 24/7.

I got the 4% from my psychology book. Psychology 8th edition.

Another fallacy. People aren't born gay, but people aren't cornered into being gay either. Being raped, raised by the opposite sex parent, a bad encounter with the opposite sex, level of sex hormones, and fear/hate of the other gender don't make you gay.

Think about it, if there is a gay gene how the hell has it gotten passed down? Back in the day there were no seminal injections or tube babies.

Anyway, CapellaStar*, I wasn't saying they were going to have sex on the dance floor, but their dancing would bring discomfort and anger to the good denizens of the prom potentially putting them in danger.

Anyway, CapellaStar*, I wasn't saying they were going to have sex on the dance floor, but their dancing would bring discomfort and anger to the good denizens of the prom potentially putting them in danger.

They won't be uncomfortable. They would be fully comfortable since everybody knows that all teens have homosexual tendencies.

It could be dormant in most cases, or appear when both parents have certain genes. How do you think genetic diseases that kill you before adulthood appear?

Wait, but I thought you said that it's not normal to be homosexual. So it's alright to think about it, but not to act on it?

But how many people were surveyed for that 4%? Who knows who could have been lying about it, too. But, if you can't trust data, then there's nothing left to trust.

Then please explain to be how there are homosexuals if you aren't born gay or put into situations.

When fetuses are still in the womb, they are all considered the same, no gender. That's the same reason why men have nipples. But the longer that future boys are in that state, the probability of how feminine they will be goes up. (And I got that from a science book, just so no one asks me to back this up)

Prom is suppose to be a good time, one of the best moments in highschool, then some fat dyke comes marching in with her ugly girlfriend and they are kissing up on each other and shit.

You didn't say it, but you sure damn implied it.

I just can't get over how this is an issue. Someone's going to be ~offended~? ~Uncomfortable~? Heaven forbid! Get over it, people. Poor Constance and her girlfriend.
yeah, the bible belt is not exactly fond of such things. therefore they make a big deal out of this shit. what a waste of energy.
Excuse me for jumping in here, but the press made a big deal out of it.
Oh, and I almost forgot! So did we.

lol... I can't win.

Then explain why when a gay woman has a baby it is no more likely to be gay it's self than if a normal woman had the baby.

I was giving a example that's a bit higher on the homosexual end of the spectrum. The example I should have given was a guy dating a woman with a man butt, or a musclely woman, or something of that nature.
And I may be ignorant but I'm not ignorant to the feelings of others. When we talked about the subject of gay in my psych class several people got grossed out. 3-5 in a class of 25.
I don't know. But a random survey usually yields a pretty accurate result.
Anyway the most likely cause of the gay is a mixture of culture influences, genetic influences, and choice.

Kissing=/= sex.
