I'm curious what people consider to be the anime version of Citizen Kane, ie. An anime that is generally older and most would agree is the best ever made.

I was waiting for someone to say this. It happened a lot later than I expected meaning it was not the first post.

Lupin III might be one of the strong candidates from what I've heard, still haven't watched it myself.

Edit. Oh no wait! Of course everyone would agree that Muumin was the best Anime series ever made.

I was a little ashamed of myself because it didn't occur to me in the first place. I'm such a sorry ass for a Finn :'(

Lupin III is a good pick.
Franchise still has stuff coming out, it has been recently revitalized.
It's extremely influential with many manga and anime still referencing it.
Kinda just like JoJo was influential, heh. Just not a meme.

It's objectively Cowboy Bebop.
Also Berserk is the Casablanca of anime.

I know right?
Citizen Kane is only the second most important movie ever...the most important is the Wizard of Oz.

I'm pretty sure Citizen Kane was praised when it was released.
In fact it won 2 awards the year it came out.

wikipedia said:
Citizen Kane received the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Picture.[120] The National Board of Review voted it Best Film of 1941,[121] and recognized Welles and Coulouris for their performances.[122]

You're right, Berserk is the greatest love story of all Anime history.

And both have strong homo-erotic overtones.

I had a friend from Finland who would talk about this show, i didn't realize it was even anime. Is there a reason it was so popular in Finland?

You're welcome. All of her work is kind of a National Treasure to us.

One time I ate 50 magic mushrooms and watched the Muumins.
It didn't improve the experience.

I think it would be Akira. Akira flopped at the box office. The company that made it went out of business It innovated animation techniques. It is still the most expensive Anime movie (so maybe more like Cleopatra). It wasn't appreciated until later. And then now, much like Citizen Kain, it is considered overrated.

As much as Neon Genesis Evangelion was actually hated by critics at first. It was always popular. So maybe it is like Escaflowne, a critic darling and populists never cared about it as much. But it could be like Evangelion in terms up setting up the standard by which all modern TV anime follow.

But it could be like Devilman in terms of every modern anime copies it. (including Akira, Berserk, and Evangelion.)Basically, maybe everything Go Nagai. Highly innovative, critically panned, and everyone wants to copy his work.

I hope you watched the episode where they encountered some magic mushrooms.

If your 50 magic mushrooms were anything alike I don't wonder why it didn't improve your experience lol. Try watching this whole ep in Finnish next time with the shrooms ;)

I still can't understand why anyone would like Akira.

Being Citizen Kane a famous but niche film and not so "pop", i'd choose Evangelion/Cowboy Bebop.

It's gotta be Shin-chan! There is no other.
