Hey all. Once upon a time, I was introduced to anime.

It began with Sailor Moon, Ranma, Urusei Yatsura, Slayers and a lot of others too.

I watched and downloaded a massive dose of anime once upon a time.

Then life got interesting. Oh, you have no idea :)

So I have this large gap, well I suppose it can be called a large gap. That's complicated too. And I have no idea what is currently 'cool'.

Right now I'm binge watching Sailor Moon. Not the new stuff, yet.
Pop and chips and well that's my New Year's activity I guess.
I'm here watching anime with my teddy bear.

I have no idea what is considered 'the thing' for anime.
Totally out of the loop.
But I own something like 5TB of anime.
It's hard to care what is 'new'.
Just living the life of an anime princess.

Some people are the opposite of this, they only watch seasonal anime and are forever stuck in a loop of catching up

The usual question is the older anime. Cause, I mean, there is a big reason why anime became popular around 2012, cause new anime and more fans that was brought in.

I feel the same, I don't really care about keeping up with seasonal anime (the only shows I've watched from this year are Teekyuu 9 and the Yuyushiki OVA) and I think it's fine to be out of the loop. There are a bunch of shows I want to watch that I've heard great things about like Made in Abyss, Owarimonogatari 2nd Season and Natsume Yuuchinjou: Roku, but as Orange said I didn't want to force myself just so I could be in the loop and discuss them.

I've stopped watching anime quite a bit recently , I don't know if it's that the new shows aren't appealing to me or that I just don't like it any more. I care about the new shows less than I did.
I'm definitely watching the sequels coming out soon tho.

I like both newer shows and older shows. And I watch both whenever I feel like it.
Most of the time, when I watch seasonal shows I watch them weekly and fit other anime I want to watch in between.

Don't force yourself if you don't enjoy it.
For the last couple of years I've seen about 10-15 new anime per year. Many of them sequels to shows I liked. I don't care about peer pressure that much, I only watch what I think it's interesting.

I usually watched 2-3 shows a season, but other than that I am just like you. I don't watch as much anime as I used to so have 2-3 shows every season is nice because thats only a couple of episodes a week. So every new season takes about an hour from a week, leaving me with so much time to do other shit - like watch older anime from my collection (although I have been hella slacking lately).

I haven't really looked at what next season has to offer, but I know Citrus will be airing and I'm interested in it.

Lately about 2/3 of the anime I watch is newer stuff. I tend to rate older stuff higher but I enjoy staying up to date on anime, it's just a different part of the hobby. When I was first getting back into anime after a 4 year gap, I was almost exclusively watching older anime and gradually caught up to the present day in the areas that interested me. Just watch what sounds interesting to you, but try not to dismiss stuff just because it's new. In my opinion the current magical girl genre is phenomenal, from the new originals to the classic reboots. But again, if you're totally disinterested in something then don't bother and focus on stuff you enjoy.

I definitely overdid it with seasonal anime this season. Fell behind on everything halfway through the season. I'm gonna watch a few shows next season but otherwise I'm gonna go for stuff that's finished airing. Plus I want my list of "pre-2000 completed shows" to look less pathetic so I'm gonna watch a fuckton of old shoujo.

I like watching older stuff and wish there was more of a dedicated community/talk for older shows, though I still keep up with and cherrypick through seasonal shows. There's so much out there that I missed out on when it was brand new and would like to experience.

I've been watching every series to the 3rd episode just in case I miss out on something good. And for the past 6 years, I'm telling you, you're not missing out on much. Maybe a few good ones here and there but no masterpiece to be found anywhere. Just take a look at top anime list. Kimi no Na wa is rated number 2.

The thing about new anime is that they are all feel good anime. I think that for the most part, anime fans nowadays watch anime to kill time rather than to really get into it like in the old days. They watch anime, not experience it.

Anime nowadays comes with no negative emotions and no complexity at all. They're very predictable, very flashy, and everything is gone as expected to not upset the fans. It has lost the unpredictability that it once had. Not only that, it lost the negativeness that requires one to feel in order to get attach to the characters. Just take a look at the difference between Naruto and Boruto. Naruto was a loser and we all empathize with him when he was powerless to do anything compare to Sasuke. But that shows growth because despite being jealous, despite being hopeless, Naruto learn to rise above it. But with Boruto, everything he does is right and everything he does is a success. A boring, predictable, and simple feel good anime.

Depends by what you mean with care, i for one won't be watching seasonals because i hate the wait for new episodes, but that doesn't mean that new anime doesn't catch my attention. If something looks interesting i'll watch it, simple as that, no matter what year it was made in, it could be made in 1980 or in 2018, as long as it looks interesting i'll add it to my PTW list and eventually watch them.

DEFINE FUCKING NEW OP.

You are engaging a thread with stupidly undefined parameters. You run the risk of pitting the best of a current season's lineup vs the best out of anime since the beginning and of fucking course the former will have its arse handed to it because it's a seasonal lineup against the one or two worthwhile anime every year joined together.

Personally, I enjoy talking on forums like mal and reddit about weekly shows, as it's much easieer to generate discussion during air time then after. If I posted something in anime series section like Serei no Moribito I would probably only generate 5 or less responses, where if I did it while it was airing, I'd probably get 20+.
