| So hear me out, cause I think I'm onto the fact that anime is actually trying to make us all into problematic drinkers I'm watching KonoSuba right now and clearly they're glorifying drinking in that series. Lupin and Cowboy Bebop glorify smoking of course (who doesn't wanna be cool like Spike amiright?). Clearly it seems to me that anime is diverging from its wholesomeone and pure roots into glorifying and making us all into booze-addled cigarette smokers Basically it's the end of stable culture as we know it I mean, Kobayashi's Dragon Maid is basically alcoholics R' us. Is anime making us all into around the clock booze heads? Have you become a pack a day smoker already? Has the downfall of society at the hands of anime truly begun? also discuss the portrayal and presence of drugs in anime, how this relates to viewership and greater Japanese culture around drugs |

| It's just a reflection of their culture. It's so uptight about working hard and satisfying a collective of people (co workers, family, their community) that of the few ways they can relax is with cigs and booze. Also drinking alcohol is such a social thing for them. Basically they drink together as a sort of proof you are loyal to the group and want to be a part of it and you get peer pressured into it because if you dont play along they could reject you. This is quite bizarre with how contrast it is to their irrational level of disgust with drugs. They basically are on believing Reefer Madness propaganda level of irrationality. This is even more bizarre when you know marijuana has a long tradition in Japanese religion but they dont realize it's the same plant. Notice how they never portray drugs in anime unless it's a fictional drug? That's how taboo it is to them apparently. If anyone is from Japan or has lived there a while correct me if I interpreted things wrong. |

| Anime doesn't try to be exemplary as much as as Western cartoons do, and they prefer making relatable characters with some good qualities rather than perfect role models like Barbie or Superman. After all, it's the parents' responsibility to make sure their kids don't become drunken meth heads, not the Saturday morning cartoons'. And if you're personally too weak to resist vices because you see them in anime, then you can only blame yourself and not the anime. People in general should learn some self-restraint and not expect their government and TV stations to make all their life choices for them. Also, drinking with friends is fun. So why not depict that in an anime? If you're a teetotaller who's triggered by it then there are tons of other anime that don't show people drinking alcohol. Go watch them instead. |
| I sure hope so. I love drinking. Also, Japan allows public drinking and intoxication. Business men tend to get drinks with their coworkers immediately after work. Soooo, yeah booze and getting toasty are fairly present in anime and no one is complaining. |
