This scenario was very fascinating. It goes into that notion of morality vs legality. While killing isn't prohibited by law, it is not permitted by the people living there. When a community embraces the same morals, there usually is no need for laws. Laws are meant as deterrents precisely due to a lack of moral foundation within a society.

It was a 2nd amendment utopia. Extremely limited government, rural society, and the 'weak' (Kino is counts as 'weak' in this comparison, because she didn't draw) are protected because others can and will stand up against agressors. Apart from the Cowboy theme, I think the wall was a nice hint too =P

Anyway, I thought it was interesting how a Japanese production would open their series with such a serious and frankly quite positive take on this, and show how it could actually work.

deep down this is what american gun owners/second amendment supporters wish for, right?

Yes, I think so. In that way it is no different than any other political ideology. Virtually alll concepts of government are based on a utopia: socialism, liberalism, etc. Politics are then to transform these bases into practical applications.

Here in Europe, 2nd amendment loyalty if often seen as strange or even backward. but that's because for starters we fail to see the base it is build on; people think it's just about "liking guns" or even bloodlust, and secondly if we do recognize the base we can't see how politics can transform it into something workable. Concerning the latter, American 2nd amendment supporters could probably say the same thing about socialism, while the former (not recognising the base) is simply our fault. There exist of course 2nd amendment supporters that do in fact just shout "yay, guns!", but there are also plenty of socialists in Europe that just shout "yay, welfare!".

Quite refreshing seeing this show with the new animation honestly.
Pretty smart though, let people think you can just kill whenever but not permit it so that you can get rid of the people that think killing another person for the fun of it is fine. (protect the weak)
Also lmfao at the guy's "weird" question, mountains of crêpes.

Very good first impression so far!

Oh Kino, I missed you...and of course, Hermes most of all. LOL.

I watched the first TV adaption over a decade and a half ago way before I even landed on MAL. I remembered some philosophical and thought provoking idiosyncrasies of each episode and each countries, some had profound truths, others just to bend your mind a bit, but mostly I forgot about everything else. You still got it Kino!

The last guy might be an actual fit for that country, weary and seeking peaceful refuge from a violent world, and yes, that mountains of crepes they serve! XD
You see there's no need to wonder where your god is,
Coz he's right here! ...and he's fresh out of mercy.

It was interesting, a little weak but I’m still interested in advancing. Besides the story everything else was done so well. I’m watching dubbed and I’m happy with everyone’s performance. I found myself annoyed at the idea of them just saying country I think it would have been dope for it to have some names so I can associate each place with something.

I believe the man in the gatehouse was intended to look like Charles Bronson, lead actor in the Death Wish series of vigilante films:
The subject matter of someone killing criminals because they deserve it and/or to protect the innocent is an obvious connection.

Hermes' mention of a dog carrying a human hand around was definitely a reference to Yojimbo:
For a Japanese show set in a rather America-like place with the sensational description that murder is legal it's a clever move to throw that back in the audience's face by referencing a story set in Japan that does have the merciless violence Hermes was talking about. Furthermore for a Japanese story it was a remarkably perceptive and fair treatment of American gun culture; indeed much more level-headed than many American works of fiction from places there that lack the gun culture.

I think you can easily go too far in comparing this to the 2003 TV series but something I noted was that Kino sleeps with her clothes on with her gun across held her chest, even while staying at the hotel in town. This emphasizes the possibility of violence much more than the earlier series did. When Kino was at a hotel in the first series she would be very relaxed.

I'm coming to this anime after watching all the old stuff and in my opinion this episode is way better than the previous ones with the exception of the movie Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World - Byouki no Kuni - For You.
Everything in this anime is better than the previous ones, I liked the designer more, I liked the personality of the characters, the voices are very similar to the previous series, only hermes' voice is a little strange but it's still very similar.
Now commenting on the episode itself, it's a criticism of the laws, where a country that is allowed to kill people doesn't actually do it, only if someone tries to kill someone innocent, it's a country where citizens can kill the bad guys, whenever we have an armed population this is shown in statistics crime decreases, if the population has means of defense the evildoer thinks twice before committing evil.
And there's also the fact that people are attracted to this country in two ways, the first guy was attracted to the rumor of being able to kill someone and the last guy was attracted to the prospect of not having to kill anyone.

Eu estou vindo para esse anime depois de assistir todo o material antigo e na minha opinião esse episódio é bem melhor que os anteriores com exceção do filme Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World - Byouki no Kuni - For You.
