| I am proud of being an otaku in the sense that I am not ashamed of liking anime. I freely admit to any who ask and/or are interested in what my hobbies are that I like anime/manga/jpop and have a lot of knowledge (well-rounded, I'd like to think) about my hobby. I would probably also be one of those people who would have the room done out in all the otaku gear, too, was I not barely making it on the bills from month to month (I've always wanted to collect figures and plushies, at the least). That being said, I do not excuse "being proud" of being an otaku as shouting it from the rooftops or jamming it down the throat of every person that could care less that passes by. I figure if people aren't interested, then there's no point in sharing with them in the first place, and there are plenty of other things Im interested in that I can talk to others about (like computers, books, etc) if anime just isn't their thing. |

| I'm certainly not ashamed of being slightly somewhat otaku. I work, I study; I have my interests. Admittedly, it's an odd pride - but the same can be said about all other interests as well. |

| I am how you say in hiding? lol I just feel so uncomfertable just pulling a manga out in class and reading yet my friends can pull out hard yaoi and read it in the middle of math! idk how they do it. when i have my FMA shoulder bag on sometimes i makes it so you can't see the front. But usually when at conventions and anime clubs I am proud to show off what I know. for most are surprised to find out i watch twice as much anime as them. Anyone i have ever known were generally shocked to learn I was a fellow otaku/weeaboo. They say I don't really "look the part" If i may... not saying I'm the pretty popular type (my sister is well known in my school for that) but (trying to word this without sounding full of myself or obnoxious.) most described be as the... pretty bitchy mean girl type when they first saw me... I know Ryuji's pain well T_T people think i have problems with them all the time, a girl actually slapped me once cuz she didn't like the way i looked at her .-. BUT once I find a fellow otaku I quickly open up and become hyper and insane and start blabbing on about anime and characters they don't even know. |

| I wouldn't say I was a completely over the top otaku; I don't collect figurenes and my room isn't covered in posters or littered with DVDs, But I'm quite proud of being big into anime. I live in England and it's nowhere near as popular here as in the US, so it's not very common to come across other anime fans. I find it really nice having an interest that hardly any others have. It's great explaining it to people who've never heard of it before too. ^.^ |

| Im Pretty proud about it, I mean i dont go around showing my stuff off or anything but i dont hhide it when i read it in class. Whenever people try to make fun of me for it i always come up with something to make fun of them about and they usually never talk to me again lol. ( I dont have a line to cross for people like that) |

| i really love animes but i wont call my self a otaku as a otaku to me is a person who spends allot of money on the DVD and figurines as for me if theres a anime i really loved i would probably buy the DVD just to support the company who made the anime but sofar i aint got any so i just say im a big fan of anime XD btw why am all the people in those pictures wearing bags? o.o |

| I don't know if its a matter of being proud or not. I would likely be considered an Otaku, though its just the way I am. I have a life outside of anime. Although I'm not ashamed that I like anime to what could be considered an extreme. I just like it, so who cares about the details. :) |

As you conveniently pointed out in your Harry Potter example, it is very much subjective. One can be (and will be) proud of anything - possibly due to reasons they themselves cannot explain. If you are honestly prescribing an ABSOLUTELY CORRECT way to feel pride, then I'm afraid you are chasing some ghostly ideal. Speaking of ghosts, the ghost of Ayn Rand would probably love to have you as a disciple. And if you must know, I rather like how I've designed my room to accommodate moe DEEP anime elements... It isn't always as simple as "I AM SO PROUD OF MY ANIME WATCHING". No one is that one-dimensional (Or so I hope...) |

I just started watching anime recently and still ignorant (and not too enthusiastic) about most stuff related to it so I guess I'm not an Otaku. But if I turn out to be one someday, I won't hide it, but I won't flaunt it either. It's normal to collect stuff and decorate your room with things that you like-- in your case, anime DVDs and anime posters. And it's not bad to wish to have an Anime Club in your campus or wear short skirts as uniform. I just hope you're not shutting yourself off from others (specially family and friends) because of your obsession. |

| I mean pride in the sense that your hobby might be better than other people's (I'm seriously alot of people who make fun of anime/manga are into some pretty dumb $%^# themselves), but yes it isn't a lifestyle or an accomplishment for most people. Your not going to get the kind of responses you want here because most people here including myself probably don't qualify as being Otaku, so thats why you see people who are perhaps somewhat justifiably miffed at the implication that they are. |

Its a cartoon tv show nothing more. Giving it some cult like status by dressing up as cartoon characters,using terms from the shows, using the several Japanese words you learned and trying to relate anime to reality is just going to make anime fans look like Star Wars and Trekkie nerds. If you got a a shit load of anime posters on your wall then most likely your folks know that you spend money on anime. There is nothing to be proud or ashamed of, its just a tv show.
