It's mostly up to their characters and what they like. Sci-Fi gets a crapton of mentions. I think the most recent with an adaptation is "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang. It got made into the Hollywood film "Arrival" recently.

Not really sure about most famous but they do mention a lot of classics.

Episode 9:
Black cover books like Watchmen, Fahrenheit 451, World War Z, 69, The Road, etc.
Snow Country - Yasunari Kawabata
Ice - Anna Kavan

Yes, thank you for this! It's what made me curious about the anime in the first place.
A good author leaves the audience enough material to be satisfied with, yet yearning for more.

Thanks for this. I was wondering whether or not to keep track of these books on my own but I was too lazy. Good timing too, I was running out of non-Japanese literature to read.
