About 50/50.
I didn't get the chance to chose in real life, so if I can choose, why not?
I don't know, I think there is some joy to be found in playing as your dream girl in a game and whatnot.
Like, that is what fantasy is for, right?

Hmm, for Pokemon I always play as a girl...but on some of my older Pokemon games I'll play as a boy, but that's about it. I always chose girl if it's there, and if it's not I'm actually okay with playing as a boy.

Never, because if I play as a Female character, dudes think I'm actually a chick.

I play as a male when there are romance options or a massive multiplayer game online.

I think I play female characters in fighting games. I pick female characters for RPG games occasionally out of pure aesthetics and me thinking the male version is stupid/ ugly looking.

It turns out

fighting games - 70% picking a female character to main (Cassandra in Soul Calibur, Cammy in Street Fighter, Zelda in Smash, Millia in Guilty Gear, Aoi in Virtua Fighter) vs (Ragna in blazblue, Gen Fu in Dead or Alive, Marshall law tekken) It looks balanced, but I rarely play Blazblue, Tekken, DOA. Irony is the game that is all about the women I pick an old man : P

Pokemon ( Gen I - male, Gen II - male, Gen III - female, Gen IV - male, Gen V - female- white, male black 2 , Gen VI female)

All other games - male in almost all cases.

70/30 in favour of female characters, they're always more feisty or interesting than dull as dishwater male characters. Theres the real under representation in video games, male characters. Even guys don't want to play them they're so sexist stereotyped.

This.

I play female characters, (I'm a guy), if the character model is cute. I play female in most MMOs and RPG games and in online multiplayer like Destiny, COD or other games like that female too. I generally find that I'm not a lore person I really couldn't care less what happened for the past 1000 years proceeding the game, I like making my character have big boobs and wear a skimpy outfit and run around with her E cup boobs bouncing in the skin tight leather bikini shes wearing, if im gonna bump thousands of hours into a game might as well look at a woman's nice boobs and bum that a dudes, (unless were RPing then ill play what ever I'm RPing but thats different)...

I don't usually play as the opposite gender. It breaks the immersion because your character has a body that you could never have. When I play as a female character, it's a bit more like watching your character do the things you tell her to do instead of you actually doing it.

The two reasons why I would ever play as a female is because they might have a smaller hitbox and that I might want to roleplay.

I'll play whatever character I think looks cooler... But if I think the female character is dressed too provocatively (or just too girly), then I automatically end up picking male (which is more often than not).

For mmorpg's I usually play female, since there tends to be a lot better variety in customizing those characters... I can make her look pretty! ♥

On RPG's Its really not up to me since the game is set that way. Unless they give you a choice, even than I play as a Male Since its an RPG and its meant to reflect me in the game.

On MMORPG's I tend to make a male aswell.

On Fighting games I tend to go for the character who has a fighting style I prefer so it can vary from girl or guy.

If there's a difference in gameplay (See: Fallout NV) then I pick both and play each route. If not I just pick one at random and call it a day.

I do it when it's the only option but I tried playing female gender once while acting like it, it just became too weird after a while for someone as manly as me :3, never doing that again.

For the first playthrough (or in MMO's, first character) I almost always pick male, because I'm male. I pick the female option only if it looks cooler.

Second time around though I almost always pick female, just to see if it's any different, or just for the feel of it if it doesn't change anything.

In fighting games the gender really doesn't matter at all. Then I go purely for what I think looks cool, or with what I'm familiar.

I'm indifferent on what gender I choose. Usually male though.

For MMOs I usually pick a gender that would look best for that class.

I honestly don't care what gender I play as in any game, really. Hell, I played as Female Mage during my time with Dragon Age: Inquisition. I played as a male/female during my days with Pokemon. I also prefer playing as FemShep in the Mass Effect series. I just like have something nice to look at while playing my games, lol. :D

I don't know what I'll pick for Fallout 4, though. I guess I'll just pick male to see what it's like for the first time I play through the game.

Barely.
All the armors/clothing & even models for males look ugly imo.

Also I'm not sure if genderlocked classes count, but I also tend to play females for those. They often seem to have the coolest looking classes to play imo

I usually play as a male in all the games I play, unless I'm trolling or my little sister makes a character that she wants to play on.
