I actually made a video about this on my Youtube channel. Things about Otaku and one of the contents of my video is, when and why did Otaku is associated with negative meaning. You guys can actually watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEvHrhdqJXc (Yes, I thought this might be a good time to promote my channel!) But, if you are not interested in my video, I will explain it here. Apparently, in Japan, there was an incident that happened between 1988 - 1989 whereby a Japanese Otaku named Miyazaki Tsutomu carried out the kidnapping, rape, and murder of several young girls in Japan. After the incident, and all the headlines that were made, the term Otaku is often associated with negative connotation. The medias were also partly to blame. Where one magazine was quoted as saying Otaku(s) are people "without basic human communication skills who often withdraw into their own world.” Many new (negative) definition for the word Otaku was given. News spread like wildfire and reaches the public. That is why when people say that "I like/love Anime", others who do not know what actually happened in the past, came to view Anime fans alike as a bunch of people who have no life and a group of perverts. Picture of Miyazaki Tsutomu The related news article |

Yeah in my place, K dramas are what's popular here, so they judge anime-lovers because they also have their stupid fandoms. Well as for my point of view, they're also some stupid girls who go gyah gyah over some hot guy who won't even look at them, so I don't mind it. K-drama fans are so judgmental, well what I'm doing is judgmental too lol, but at least i don't insult K-dramas, they're pretty good especially Goblin, but man I hate K-drama fans they judge here and judge there to anime fans just because they're so many. Pretty Lame. |

Why are people so sensitive? So you saw a fat dude with a body pillow of an anime girl. Why do you care? Does it threaten your worldview? |

Because once they see one tiny piece of ecchi (Panties, large boobs, etc.) they automatically assume you watch it for the boobs. That's only 20% true though, there is more to anime than boobs. Plus, their thought process after seeing anime is, "Woah, what is this weird animation? Look at those boobs! The way this is animated + those extremely exaggerated boobs = Porn!!!" |

You can care about how others perceive you, but its not like you need to tell the world you love the medium. If people judge you for being an anime fan and label you as a pervert and make fun of you then they aren't worth hanging out with! I can be perverted on here and I don't care how others see me. In real life I don't put myself in a position to be hated on for liking anime because anime never comes up in conversation and anyway I am 24 and somebody who is going to hate on me for liking anime is useless to talk with. I have no interest being friends with somebody who can't accept or relate to my medium of choice. |

I have never experienced this IRL but I guess when someone has no way to counter you in an argument, especially over the internet, it's just easier to use a stupid demographic. With anime for example, since a lot (if not most) anime focus on school life with underage characters, an older person can be considered a pervert for constantly watching schoolgirls in miniskirts. But that's because they most likely don't watch anime at all, so they don't know this is the just the condensed, ugly surface. They don't know how many mature anime that offer great plots meaning exist. Now about the "no life" part... This is probably coming from people who have this image of a life in their head. And that image is going out to clubs all day, drinking and having unprotected sex. EVERY DAY. Sure I have done this some times, but some other times I would like to just sit in my house, and watch some anime, or some TV shows, or even play a game. Hence, I have "no life'. It's just human nature, nothing you can about it. |

Because undoubtedly, a fair amount of anime fans ARE exactly that. And it's reflected by the high number of shows with common elements of sexualized cute moe girl/ecchi/fanservice coming nowadays that try to appeal to this demographic. If that stuff wasn't popular, why would studios go out of their way to include those fanservice elements even in shows where they don't belong? Also, just take a quick look at the common tropes and themes found in anime. There are so many things that would cause eyebrows to raise among normal people that we anime fans don't even bat an eye towards because we have become desensitized to it all. Oh, and you need not look further than our very own community to find some people who even openly flaunt their love for these type of shows. |
