Do you ever have the problem that you think the story is something you really like, but you refuse to watch it just because the artstyle is so different and wrong in your eyes.
I have this problem with Code Geass. I like the story but the art is in my eyes so ugly, that I just can't get myself to watch it.
Do you guys have this problem too, or do you guys watch an anime even if the artstyle is really ugly?

This is why I don't watch any anime made before 2007 because the art looks old as fuck and ugly.

I also had the same prob with One Piece but I decided to watch and now it's one of my favorite anime.

Art style has never really stopped me from trying out a show, but something with a more modern look will prolly get my attention more. Then again, two of my favorites are from the 80's. ¯|(°_o)/¯

Most of the time if I don't like the artstyle to begin with, I get used to it after a while. I'm more interested in basically everything else about a show over the artstyle anyway.

Lmao at people who think 2006 anime is old. OT: I saw Code Geass a long time ago and didn't have any problems with the art style... Have seen the original HxH way back as well but not the 2011 version, seemed fine to me. The only anime I decided not to watch because of its artstyle is Initial D.

Yes when it came to Katanagatari. I like anime with unique art styles like Gankutsuou, Kuuchuu Buranko but imo Katangatari's unique art style is not appropriate for it because of it's historical setting. I would of preferred if the character designs were like those in Rurouni Kenshin.

If I like the story, animation style isn't really that important.

I don't understand the OPs issue with Code Geass though, it has average art style & quality in my opinion, doesn't even stand out in any way.
If you generalize, you're wrong.

The DPI of digital art aids took a leap around 2007/8 which makes anything digitally drawn before it look like ass. It's not that everything before 2007 is old, it's the fact that between 1999 and 2007 there was a "dark age" of very low quality digital aid being used in the industry. Hence why a lot of 90s anime can look better than some 00-07 anime.

On topic: I'm struggling to get into Seto no Hanayome because of art. That, and it's not very funny when it tries to be funny.

I had this problem with Slam Dunk.

I can watch Kuroko No Basket easily but the really dated art style of Slam Dunk, I can't even get past the first ten minutes.

I think some animes need an updated art style. Like some Video Games do with HD remasters or remakes.

If you're into the medium specifically for the art instead of reading books and stuff, then I think it's a valid reason.
Most of the shows i've seen, which are rated really low, I really like because the artstyle and animation is so good. for example: Code Breaker.

A lot of people seem to say that they're bothered by One Piece's art style, but I never really had a problem with it. Now Soul Eater on the other hand...

But yeah, some shows where I would say the art style makes me not want to watch it that much would include Kaiji/Akagi, Kaiba, Panty & Stocking, Aku no Hana, and probably a few others.
And I mean that in the most sexually painful way possible.

Because I prefer the art style of older Anime, I sometimes find it difficult to look at Anime made after 2000. However, that doesn't stop me from watching it completely, as I can still find some good new stuff if I look hard enough.

There are some, although not that many.

What I meant was despite the fact that I don't like the artstyle of most modern Anime, If I find something interesting, I'll grin and bear it even if I don't like the way it looks, although I can't do that for every Anime.

I think there are 2 big leaps in artstyle, the first one is 2007-2008, the second one is 2010-2011

Kaiba was a clear cut anime that has a weird art style ... but I ended up enjoying it anyways, if anything it added more to the story.

Some people I know dont watch One Piece because of the art style :/

Just wait for 4K to get mainstream. The tools are there, but proper demand won't arrive for another 2-3 years.

Aliased lines (zigzags) will be a thing of the past, finally.

What?

OT: Only with adaptions. The new Sailor Moon has me a little scared just because of how different the art style is to the original. I know it's more similar to the manga, but still.
FMA Brotherhood was like that too. I liked the old style better. No even the style, but the colors. They seemed to bright to me and it turned me off. (The manga was a masterpiece so who cares if I didn't see the anime)

That said, I'll probably watch both, and love both when I get around to it.

I don't really have this problem most of the time. There is so far only 1 anime I've dropped because of art style, and that's Gankutsuou. The crazy textures that move around and don't stay consistent actually gave me a headache. I stopped watching as a result, even though the story was interesting.

A show can redeem itself with a good story in my eyes most of the time, even if the art is terrible. I think Hajime no Ippo has that really ugly sort of shounen art, but the story is fun and exciting to me.

So your weakness is fish. Duly noted.

OT: I'm more likely to put it off if the art is ugly, but I don't think I'd skip an anime for the art style alone. If the anime itself only sounds nominally interesting and the art is bad, though, I may skip it.

Ping Pong is unwatchable due to it's horrendous unfitting artstyle, Aku no Hana is just as bad due to the anime's artstyle (the manga doesn't have these issues either). Anime must be visually appealing and neither are visually appealing.
