Your resting heart rate should be measured in the morning 5 minutes after you wake. If you cannot measure it then, measure it at night after laying on your bed for 10 minutes.

Taking a radial or carotid pulse measurement (at the wrist or neck) is usually the easiest method.

Manual Method:

* Measuring Heart RateCarotid Pulse (neck) - To take your heart rate at the neck, place your first two fingers on either side of the neck. Be careful not too press to hard, then count the number of beats for a minute.
* Radial Pulse (wrist) - place your index and middle fingers together on the opposite wrist, about 1/2 inch on the inside of the joint, in line with the index finger. Once you find a pulse, count the number of beats you feel within a one minute period.

(note: I use a heart rate monitor since I am an athlete. It is the most accurate measurement of your pulse. At night your heart can slow to 30 bpm.)

(note2: An athlete will have a much lower pulse than the average person. mine is 48. Do not lie about your resting heart rate. Lower isn't better. I am just trying to get a perspective on peoples pulses.)

Mine varies depending on how sleepy I am. It is usually in the 55-65 range. However, my blood pressure is high, at around 140 to 60.

Wow, considering how unhealthy and unfit I am, 68 is pretty good (i.e. Above Average is fine with me).

If you look there isn't a whole lot of variance in the fitness levels. All you have to do is find the age group that is the closest. That chart is not there for you to say, "yea I am fit so my pulse must be XXX" Instead it is there for you to see what your fitness is based on your actual pulse.

I'm right at 70, not bad I guess. I wasn't expecting too much since my only exercise consists of a daily walk around my town.

Triathalons are running swimming and cycling. All three are the best sports IMO. When the tour de France and the giro de Italiano are on TV on the sports channels... ... ... They are sports.

Actually, cycling is very good for improving your VO2max (I think it's called something like that), since it's an aerobic exercise that makes your heart beat fast, the same as running...

Yes you are correct, there is a setting on my POLAR that asked me for that, I believe it is volume of oxygen, but I am not sure how to measure it. It is how efficient your body is at using oxygen, therefor your heart doesn't have to work as hard and you can breathe slower. It is good for scuba, you can stay down longer. ^^

HAH, I own a stethoscope!

Now, I bet you don't know but the pulse rate is actually different from the heart rate (it's slower) What do I do now?

Actually if you think about it your pulse should be the same speed as your heart. But put the stethoscope on your artery in your arm, and you should hear it, they do that at the doctor when they take your blood pressure.

No, actually since the artheries are far from the heart there is a delay. Just measured myself (and its exact, Littman for Large Animals, you can't beat this) and have 88 bpm and pulse of 56.

Seems I'm healthy, yay.

Well, I didn't exactly measure at the right time, but I haven't been doing anything too strenuous lately, so I can't imagine it's too far off.

Anyway, mine was 74bpm. And yet, for all that speed, my hands, feet, and even my arms and legs are still almost always cold.

Aye, that has nothing to do with your heart. I have the same thing, its called Raynaud's Phenomenon

Go read about it, it is easier for people like us to lose fingers and such because of it.

Anerobic Does nothing for your heart. Only your mussels.

You should see about some aerobics, Anything with running would be good (football, basket ball, soccer)

Edit: 70 is not a bad beat :)

lol I might do about 10 minutes or less on the stepmachine but that's all, I'm not looking to lose weight at all, rather prefer to increase it

I'm really interested in Kinesology or in whatever way it's spelled, it's why this topic caught my interest...slightly.
