5) Episode 85 "Light × And × Darkness"
Pretty mind-blowing episode, with the quiet and calm first half of the episode and complete opposite of the second after Kite's left to die. A major turning point of the arc.
4) Episode 111 "Charge × And × Invade"
I thought Netero and Zeno's entrance to the battlefield was very well done and dramatic. Netero's backstory was also presented neatly, and the tension can be felt when Pitou changed from defensive stance to offensive.
3) Episode 126 "Zero × And × Rose"
Hands on one of the best fight in the entire series. Two warriors who really respected one another as the battle grows. Netero's moves were incredibly stunning to watch, and his persistence to complete his task is admirable. It's an episode of a large scope between the representative of Ants and Humans. Great dialogue, great depth, great battle sequences, just really well-done.
2) Episode 131 "Anger × And × Light"
Hoo boy. This episode was an epitome of the word "emotional ride". Gon's unexpected development was shocking, almost considered triumphant because he manaages to defeat his sworn enemy, but comes at a high cost. Really amazing art direction, voice acting and music in the episode. Episode was extremely personal as it tests the bond between Gon and Killua, and it still gives me chill thinking about the incident.
1) Episode 135 "This Person × And × This Moment"
Mereum and Komugi's final moment MADE the arc for me. When I first read the manga, I have a lot of mixed feelings about the whole arc. I still liked it a lot, but when compared directly to Yorkshin arc, something felt missing. The culmination of the arc with Mereum and Komugi was the missing puzzle, and it truly touched me, no kidding. As I posted in the episode thread, I felt that it was a display of pure love and attachment between two individual. It was just simply beautiful, no better words to describe it. I thought it was an extremely fitting conclusion to this enormous arc, to see how Mereum (who although is a villain, the TRUE protagonist the arc) grew from a pure monster who killed his mother on his birth and consumes human alive to becoming a "human" with emotion, a care and appreciation for others (including humans) to the point where he would consider his plan about let humans survives on with his species. He learnt to throw away his pride and found out that the world isn't made just of power and control, but of other things. Splendid writing of a villain.
Overall, Chimera Ant arc has its ups and downs. There are a lot of slow-mo and snail-moving paces here and there, especially during the early/mid sections of the invasion parts, but I think the last 10 or so episodes made up for everything, including the ending (episode 135) to me. |
