I am new to anime and was wondering why do "all" anime characters have the same facial features?

Especially the female characters.

It's like there is a stereotype anime face that is used all the time.

why is that?

Probably because it's simple and easy to draw.

Because anime is Japanese and all Japanese people look the same.
There's no need for all this tension.

It doesn't matter if they don't have a nose, chin, eye, ear, hands and probably a leg as long as they are cute.

Anime is pretty much mass-produced, no? You have studios pumping out multiple anime every season, so I wouldn't expect them to make each one look "unique".

There are also a lot of anime based on source material that uses an art style similar to what you would find in your run-of-the-mill anime.

It kind of bothers me too, its like they have some assets like in flash animation and just swap out the hairstyles and eye colors and boom new character. At least within a show, you hardly see variety in facial features anymore, its always only eye color and hairstyle/clor that makes a character different from one another.

i think depends from the studio that they are made. I mean, if is the same studio it WILL be the same face but if its not....depends of the manga too, if the anime is based on the manga the characters can't be different or something. They all have big eyes because its easier to express their emotions.

Depends on the anime. Ever watch something like Monster? The facial features of each character looks different so you can even recognize their nationalities by looking at their face.

They have similar traits for sure but the more anime you watch the more you will see how very different the various studios art is.

OMG yeah I know. Why do artists feel the need to stereotype female characters? I hate it when characters in my favourite show have eyes. Oh and noses, I hate those things. Mouths are okay, but they're a bit cliche. We should have female characters with facial hair for once!

I dont see why people are "bashing" the op when he is sort of right. Sure across different anime the characters look different, but take your average anime and make the characters all bald and give them the same eyecolors and see if you can still make a difference. Maybe you can still se which is male and which not but that is as far as youll get. There arent too many anime that try to give the characters uniqe facial features, the difference always lies in the eyes and hair.

i just don't think thats true at all. Unless you have been watching a single genre of aniime, produced in a single time period, this rings false

The more anime you watch, you will realize this is actually not the case. I think that's a pretty popular stereotype, but its in fact not true.

Allot of anime characters have the same base features because it's what most people are used to seeing now a days as well as being easy to draw.

However there is ALLOT of anime (especially older stuff) that has very different designs.

There is allot that factors as to what certain characters look like such as: Art style, production costs, time schedules and funding to name a few. Not to mention that the design is also effected by the style of story the anime is going for, I mean, could you imagine the characters in berserk being drawn like those in clannad or something? (Just gives a more 'mature' feeling I suppose you could say)

Never noticed it except in moeblob shows, where the whole thing is just lazy to begin with, therefore I don't really care.
So, What do you think is on the other side?

I've been asking myself the same question for years now, have yet to come up with an answer I can accept.

I think it's just partial to the fact half of these studios are pumping out shows like no tomorrow, but even then, higher budget shows like Bakemonogatari are in this predicament aswell. Maybe that just appeals to the chinks?

Of course this is all an exaggeration, it's not quite as bad as you make it out to be.

Yeah but still how hard can it be to make one characters face broader, the others longer, give one a bigger ching the one a smaller one, maybe one character has a bigger nose or another one has a thiner one, little things to make the characters within a anime have different facial features. But most of the time they just look the same with the exception of old people atleast having wrinkles in their face, altough some anime are as ridiculous as giving a 70+ old man/woman simply two little lines under the eye and calling them old...

I mean a bit more diversity in facial features wouldnt hurt.

You're not supposed to mention stuff like that on this website.
It probably started out being hugely popular to draw faces in a certain way, then over time other studios picked it up as well. Seems to be more or less genre defining now.

I'm just happy I don't have a chin that could poke eyes out.

- I bet it's also much cheaper to copy paste features like that. Do make sure not to confuse it with artistic ineptitude as there are plenty of Japanese artists that know exactly what they're doing (Wakfu, the French cartoon is made by the japanese).

No, there are many variations depending on the artist or animation studio who created the work, but a lot of them share a common distinguishing style of exaggerated facial features, static hair, and impossible hair colors.

If BBCode was freaking dysfunctional I'd post a bunch of images as further example.
