Hell, do they even know?

For me, as far as friends and family go, they're generally okay with it except my father, who just doesn't really get the whole thing. Many of my friends my own age, I met at my college anime club.

But as far as other adults like work friends.. I have no idea what they would think. What about you guys?

Well, my mom just kinda rolls her eyes. She knows Sarah got me into it, and it's a way for me to bond with her, so she deals with it. I have a friend at work, that when I tell him I watch anime he says "OMG, you watch cartoon porn?" Simple minded, much? >.<

Define 'other adults in your life'.

I find people in my in person life rarely have a problem with it.

Nooooooow people in my online life, well I am regularly coming up against [insert vicious burst of very nasty venomous descriptions] people that only wish to imply I want to fuck 14 year olds all because I watch anime.

Oh you can bet that brings out my most nastiest side, and I have a capacity to be very nasty if someone wants the gloves off.

As for family, hmm no real idea. My sister has a daughter that enjoys it. Still don't know if she actually really understands it enough to know it isn't just cartoons like as in the North American style.
My mother is a 76 year old woman who likely is just too far removed from modern media to even have an opinion.

My brother.... and his wife, hmm, well I am likely guessing they wouldn't be very capable of discussing anime. But my brother is useless the moment it isn't about sports writing. And his wife is a delusional Catholic.

On the wife's side, likely no better than my brother and wife.
I think too many of my inlaws are just a bit too uninformed mainstream.

Oh well, I have several people my age that like anime.
Some in varying levels of interest.
One friend is a dedicated single (with no desire to be anything else). He has a massive anime/manga collection.

I have another friend with wife, and he also buys anime. And it's always funny to watch a 6'5" 400 pound giant of a guy try to conceal he's all worked up because Nagisa died :)
While not technically anime, currently I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku.
At least I can go see her in concert.

Well, as for my family:
- My mom always said: "Aren't you to old to watch cartoons?" I tried to explain that they are not just cartoons but it didn't worked. When I visited her recently, I showed her first few minutes of Elfen Lied and asked her: "Do you think this is a cartoon for kids?". And she replied: "Of course not, it's too f**ked up for kids." I think she got it now :-)
- My father as far as I know doesn't care about it.
- My younger brother was watching Bleach with us (me and the youngest). I don't think he's watching anything now.
- My youngest brother is still watching. I watched few episodes of Naruto with him.

As for friends at work, they usually don't care. Some of them also watch anime :-)

I can say without a doubt that my g/f (and her daughter) think that I'm strange for liking anime. I tried to get to watch the first episode of Ah! My Goddess. They said it was wwwaaayyyy to slow for them. Okay, then I went to Haruihi Suzimiya, the "movie" episode (aka the first episode). They didn't understand it at all.

Of course this is coming from two women who are comic book/DC/Marvel/Dr. Who fans. I keep saying I grew out of comics and into animes/mangas. LOL
What if the Hokey Pokey is what it is all about?

I guess I'm lucky in that I married a person who will sit and watch anime with me. My son used to do it as well and can even tell me his favorite anime even though he doesn't watch it as much. He used to be my convention going buddy as well. My mom really doesn't understand it but she knows I'm weird, my brother will discuss with me which anime is better. Overall I have it pretty darn easy ...

I have several real-life friends who are also anime fans, luckily for me. So we can talk about it, swap videos, and sometimes have viewing parties.

My co-workers don't know anything about anime, but they appreciate the work I put into our community's teen anime club and how enthusiastic my regular members are about it - our programming coordinator's even said that if I ever change jobs or can't do it anymore that she's just going to shut the whole club down, because she doesn't have anyone else who could do even half as good a job. It's nice to feel needed...I think.

As for my family, most of them either don't know that I like anime or don't care, and it's not something that ever comes up in conversation. The only family member I ever talk to about it is my Mom, and she's actually been willing to watch some with me. Now I'm pretty careful about what I show her, of course - I'd never bother with things she wouldn't understand like otaku comedies (a-la "Lucky Star"), and I've also learned through trial and error about some of the things she seems to like (slice-of-life, action) and some of the things she doesn't (tsundere violence, too much fanservice). I think the series she's enjoyed the most so far were GitS: SAC (though I had to do a LOT of explaining), Naruto (at least the first couple of arcs, when it was still mainly Team 7-centered), The Vision of Escaflowne, and K-On. In fact, the first question she asked me after our first K-On viewing session was, "Why don't Americans ever make shows like this?" :)

Some of my RL friends are anime watchers, less extreme than me tho.

I have 1 coworker that watches anime but since our core group is made of mostly Geek people it goes well among discussion about Starwars, Star Trek, comic books, movies/tv series based on comics, etc.

My girlfriend rarely watch anime (she watched the 1 season of Fairy Tale which was dubbed in French), my daughter is 6, I'm planning on introducing her to some good anime and hook her in. *grin*

Lately, my gf keeps walking on me watching some harem anime where there are some semi-nude/panties showing females.... and keeps telling our friends and family that I'm watching some naked Sailor Moon. *sigh*

Enjoying reading peoples responses. Interesting to see everyone's experiences.

My dad introduced me to Ghibli Studios as a child (Castle in The Sky and Nausicaa) and when I was a teenager we'd sit and watch things like GITS and Perfect Blue together.

Rest of my family just calls me "geeky" and see it as no different then me watching Star Trek or Dr Who both of which they consider to be also be "geeky". They all enjoy Disney & Pixar so the whole "it's a cartoon" argument never crops up.

Husband enjoys a Ghibli movie and I have also dragged him to the cinema to watch a few other movies and he's managed to enjoy most of those...but series hold zero interest for him.

My friends have never ever watched anime and therefore have nothing to say on the matter.

I also watch anime with my mom and she loves it although I'm pretty careful to weed out the weirder side of things. while watching RE:Zero (one of her favorites), she asked me "what is a loli?" and I feigned ignorance, "some japanese word, I have no idea haha"

As a guy in my mid-40s, it's tough to get any of my friends to take it seriously. They seem rather indifferent. I've tried to recommend some shows to several friends. I've explained how it's not all Dragonball and Naruto, and that there are some really touching and mature shows out there. I've got a friend who is really into romantic comedies, and romantic dramas. I thought she would be a perfect candidate to try to convert. I even loaned her some of my DVDs and Blu Rays. She binge watched some of one series on a boring day. But she didn't complete it. And I eventually reclaimed my discs before they somehow disappeared. I've tried recommending some of the things that occasionally appear on Netflix. But she seems not all that interested. I guess my friends' lack of interest is better than facing ridicule. But it would be nice to have some people in my circle to actually discuss the topic with.

I don't have anyone irl that I can talk to anime about, which is why MAL Later Years is so great, as it gives me a chance to talk to people my own age group about anime.

My family think that anime comes in two categories, Ghibli movies and hentai, so whenever anime is mentioned they always make disparaging remarks, so I rarely bring it up anymore, even Ghibli films (although my sister does really like Ghibli films, as I do, and even has a lot of artwork from the movies in her house).

My missus will watch some anime with me, such as Little Witch Academia and Violet Evergarden, and also Ghibli films that she loves like, but nothing else.

@ig-88a noticed that you're watching some great shows atm, Hoozuki no Reitetsu, Mai-Hime and Wave, Listen to Me, all of which I really enjoyed. Coolheaded Hoozuki was one of my favourites for a long while, i love his deadpan attitude, plus the show gave me a great introduction to Japanese mythology.

Hello!

I have been watching animated movies for a very long time; my first theater-experience was the first Junglebook. In the -80:ies, when my children were young, we used to watch Sailor Moon, TMHT. He-Man and such shows.

These days, I usually don´t say that I watch anime. People think that either i suffer from autism or Asperger or that I am watching hentai.

But! This summer I met a woman, who also liked to watch anime. That was very nice. To be able to discuss different things in anime was a truly amazing experience.

Also, I am happy that I can talk about anime in this forum.

I'm afraid I'm strange enough for everyone else to ignore another weirdness. I know some guys who watch anime, but they can't distinguish shaft from madhouse by frame. What should I talk to them about?
