Can anyone recommend an action anime where the main characters are female? I'm getting sick of watching action anime with faux action girls and female characters that only serve as love interests or slut queen villains.

First one that comes to mind is Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. First anime I ever watched (which isn't Pokemon, DBZ, etc), and if you can forgive the rather crappy sound effects, it's got some good action and awesome music.

I would recommend Black Lagoon. The females in that show are really awesome.

El Cazador De La Bruja? I haven't fully watched it but it seems to fit your bill here.

Just seconding what Fang-tan has already mentioned: Noir! And, uh, I wouldn't exactly call Tenshi na Konamaiki an action-anime. It's comedy, great comedy tho!

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and Magic Knight Rayearth are both magical girl series to some degree, but I'd definitely categorize them just as much under action.

Juuni Kokki and Kino's Journey for sure. Also, though neither are the main character, Kallen and C.C. from Code Geass are also both strong, competent female characters.

R.O.D., Shakugan no Shana, and Sola have some powerful female characters. Fate/Stay night and Tsukihime have strong female characters too, though they aren't lead characters.

I also second Mai-hime and Claymore as recommendations.

GunxSword has a lot (maybe not a lot, I think it's like 3 or 4 if I remember...) of female leads and action...but it's definitely not my favorite.

I'm surprised only one person has mentioned Seirei no Moribito. But watch that, by all means. Can't go wrong with femaile heroine there. There's also Claymore, Black Lagoon, Ergo Proxy, Excel Saga (I think that one counts as action), Shakugan no Shana, Fate Stay Night (Saber ftw, though she isn't the lead) GiTS, and Gunslinger GirlKazemakase Tsukikage Ran

That's all I can think of at the moment. I'm a fan of kick*ss heroiens myself :)

These ones haven't been mentioned I think: Mai Otome, Kannazuki no Miko, Sisters of Wellber, Baccano (a few kickass female characters), Inukami, Rozen Maiden, Venus Versus Virus, etc etc

Noir, Madlax, El Cazador de la Bruja, Claymore, Mai HiME and Mai Otome, Wellber no Monotagari (but it's boring as hell), and erm...Gunslinger Girl? o.o

I always thought of Gunslinger Girl as more of a drama and less of an action series.

But I don't have anything to contribute, so I'll leave it at that.

I second the recommendation of "Baccano!", Not because it doesn't fall on the "helpless" female thing (though there IS a completely useless and submissive one), but because it's plot and characters are just kickass. And it has Isaac and Myria, the funniest pair of characters I've ever seen (especially right in the middle of so much carnage).

Hehe, totally forgot about Serei no Moribito and Baccano! Dennou Coil also has two great strong female leads though the show tends more towards slice of life, though there's still quite a bit of action.

Lain? Rocket Girls?

Uh, we're looking for ACTION anime here. That generally means that violence is desired. I don't think either of these come even close to fitting that bill. Seirei no Moribito is borderline at best. There's certainly an awesome heroine, but when you can count the (short) fights in a 26-episode TV series on your fingers . . .

The first one that springs to mind (and hasn't been mentioned already) would be Sukeban Deka. Vandread would fit the bill as well, as would any version of Nuku-Nuku. Bubblegum Crisis (both the original OVA and previously mentioned TV series) is also good, and I certainly liked the Appleseed movie. And though there isn't much of it, Gunsmith Cats is another good one.

There's a whole slew of others I could pop off just by going through my list, but that's more than enough to start.

I would also recommend Akuma No Riddle bunch of "yuri" assasin trying to kill the target (I won't give too much details) and also Canaan it's more related to Black Lagoon cuz of the terrorist thingy and it also have the yuri hints :)

Try Canaan, it's a good one. Most of the chara is female actually, and nearly all of them is a complete badass.

Beware of a bit yuri hints though, but it can also pass as an intense friendship I guess
