That smile can be attributed to his personality. No emotions, no ambitions. Those types of people just don't care, not even enough to take their own lives. So when someone is successfully about to kills them, they let go off everything. The obsession part is also understandable, what he truly wanted, didn't appear to really exist. Part of the reason he became emotionless. What I hated was that Asuna-chan and Kirito-kun agreed with his epic speech, after he confirmed that the other players really did die. Kayaba is sociopath, for him it was a fitting ending to his miraculous story. Show has made it quite clear. He had a fantasy scenario and played it out without regards for others, which is a common thread for sociopaths. Sociopaths lack empathy and are incapable of directly understanding emotions or feeling empathic towards someone. And why he got back? That was already explained by both me and few others - he did not. he imagined dying while his hp was going down. We have seen countless examples of how the death system works in SAO - you have few seconds before you go poof. Then most likely the frying starts, but however since SAO is deleting itself and releasing players, those two got lucky by dying that close to shut-down. Seriously, people, common sense, use it. |

| @mst4nk I'm sure there have been more accurate responses to your question from those who have read the novel. I have not read the novel. But the smile actually made sense to me. First of all, you're right. He's not quite right in the head. I think that goes without saying. But I think his explanation in the end pretty much reveals why he smiled. Kayaba, to me, seemed like a guy who is frustrated with the rules and regulations of reality. So he decided to create his own world free from those rules and regulations. The floating castle was the embodiment of that world. He smiled because as he states, "...I've lived too see someone transcend the laws of my own world (a different world transcending the rules and boundaries of the real world)." Therefore, my guess is that he was smiling at the irony. After all, if he couldn't be defeated then there would be no point. As Kirito said earlier, if nothing else the game is fair. So Kayaba can smile at the irony since he always entertained the possibility of him being defeated. I'm sure in a way, he was even happy that someone was able to "transcend the laws" of his world... of any world. |

Still, I didn't interpret them as being friendly though. I saw it as Kirito and Asuna wanting an answer to "why?". There was nothing left to be done. As far as they knew, all three of them were dead. It's not like they could kill him again. It was finished. The game was over. So why not hear an answer? I guess they found some sort of peace after 'dying'. once already. |

| i did not like this episode, you wouldn't be able to change the out come like that, kirito should of defiantly died, why was he glowing? there wasn't even an explanation for it, and how good kirito was looking (ok not that good) he should of been looking super ill, he hasn't moved his body in over 3 years, that would waste away all muscle, i have to say, i am thoroughly disappointed in this series and have lost all hope for it. |

People need to understand (well some do but from what i see most don't) that Kirito simply visualized himself dying that along with Asuna's words snapped him out of it. The anime didn't animate that part well because in the LN he simply got one hit in before his health hit zero thus he was "dying" but not dead. He didn't shatter nor did he fall. He simply got the hit in before his life hit zero thus clearing the game by defeating Kayaba. As for the way he just stabbed Kayaba being BS, if you didn't recall Kayaba smiled, he was happy that his system was passed. |
