He repents for all his sins, and makes the world far better in the process. I don't think there could have been a better ending, really.

LOL, trust me, this is one of the happier endings I've seen in anime. I wonder what your reaction would be if you watched Evangelion and Berserk...

so anyways, glad to see all you guys finish a pretty amazing show. However, why do you think lelouch even died?

Sure, he got stabbed by a sword, but was there a way to live? He did desire a "tommorow" did he not? With death, there would be no tommorow. Geass is the power of kings, it gives you the power to fulfill you deepest desire.

Then you must ask yourself, what truly is retribution? Was his actions for the world or for himself? How is it all tied together?

But let me tell you this

Actually the ending was amazing and made the series great. Lelouch had to "die" to make the world a better place, he had to take upon all the worlds hate so it could be cast aside along with him.

It was a good ending, it kind of reminded me of Death Note (dying on stairs) but overall I feel satisfied, it was a crazy roller coaster! :D

PS: I like to beleive that LULU is alive, finally geting some R and R with CC.

I really hate the ending!
He just died for all his hardworks!
He just turned out to be the bad guy to many!

But i guess it was the part of the story that makes it good...
Lelouch is just so intelligent that that he think that killing himself is the best...

i've realised that's it's pretty simple actually:

simple minded people=Lelouch is alive/the ending was crap

complex minded/philosophers=Lelouch is dead

of course :3

seriously though, im generalising, there will be people who dont do those do that

it's just that usually people dont see that it makes a better ending if he's dead rather than alive (he has to die for his sins) and come up with ridiculous theories about how lelouch escaped death by stealing Charles' Code

i have to point out at this time that the code has to be given willingly, not taken by force.

the only thing that i could ever think of that supports his non death is the season's name being R2

That's quite subjective, as mostly everything in entertainment happens to be. There's many ways to repent a sin, and dying is the usual, most common choice. However, people seem to always take the fact that immortality is a benefit, an advantage. Psychologically... that's not really the case. Again, this is another opinionated view. Despite the deus ex machinas and the overwhelming plot twists, Lelouch did happen to also save humanity by defeating Charles, and arguably later, Schneizel. I'm not saying that what he did then could repent his sins for committing massive amount of deaths, but sins aren't all what Lelouch possesses.

Anyways, overall, I like CG simply because the ending was just a bit enough to be ambiguous (even if many people, the director included, decided it was not.)

hmmm, that is true i suppose

i personally took the entire anime (both seasons) as a character build up for lelouch (all the other characters are extra) and to say that he escapes death instead of dying for his (and the world's) sins is taking his role as the tragic hero too lightly.

i just find the arguments that people pull out for lelouch being alive to simply be ridiculous

(such as 'stealing Charles' code)

A stretch of imagination, if nothing else. However, it could be said the same for all sorts of faith as well. We choose to believe what we want to believe, even if there's absolute truism (if truism even exists) else where. It's degrading that there's immature fanboys and haters abusing a popular title, however, ignorance is bliss, and I choose fully to ignore in this situation, since it's more or less a hopeless cause, especially on the Internet.

To be honest I think its brilliant that they can leave it open ended like that. Id personally like to think he is alive however thats just optimism.

They put that last scene in solely for that reason though. Uncertainty is the only thing we have after seeing the man on the wagon with his whole face covered. Incidentally C.C is saying his name loud enough for the driver to hear.

Ah. Optimism. :D

I will admit I didn't really like the ending and was saddened by Lelouch's death but after reading this:

ImperialX said:
Alright, it seems that the last episodewas pretty complex and out of most of the people I've talked to, a lot of people don't seems to get it. I'm going to tie up all the lose ends with this post.

The Code is the power of immortality, which C.C. has. The 98th Emperor of Britannia, Charles, has the Code. He transferred the Code to Lelouch while strangling him in episode 21. Lelouch wanted this, and he deliberately told Suzaku to not interfere.

However, the Code does not activate unless receiver dies first. This is shown when the nun kills C.C. after transferring the Code to her. Charle’s Code activated when he shot himself. Here is one of the big misconceptions that most people have: The transfer of the Code does not involve death of the transferrer. The nun was crazy and killed herself after she transferred her code. VV was injured from the battle and died. So basically, after episode 21, Lelouch had Charle’s Code (inactivated) and C.C’s contracted Geass.

When Lelouch got stabbed by Zero/Suzaku at the end, his Code was activated. What supports this is that Nunnally got Lelouch's memories when she touched her, just like Lelouch did when he touched C.C. back in Narita. The only way this could have happened is his Code activating. This pretty much confirms that he has the Code.

Unlike C.C., and Charles, who lost their Geasses because the people who contracted them died, Lelouch didn’t obtain C.C.’s Code and thus kept his Geass, while having the Code (which he obtained from Charles at the same time). Lelouch therefore has achieved CODE GEASS.

Basically, Lelouch is the person driving the cart in the last scene. He, who is now immortal, travels the brand new world he has created together with the also immortal C.C. C.C. talks to Lelouch in the end by saying: "Geass is the power of kings, it will isolate you... well, I guess thats a little wrong... eh, Lelouch?"

Now comes the second big misconception. A lot of people say C.C. was just talking to the dead like with Marianne, that's not true. She could only talk to her because of the nature of her Geass which allowed her to implant herself into the "hearts" of others. That's how she was able to talk with Marianne. Lelouch's Geass was entirely different, meaning that she could only have spoken to him if he was there. Also, the fact that the cart driver is masking his features completely supports this fact, considering the fact that Lelouch is now considered dead.

I feel much better. This makes good sense.

He'd be the perfect hero if he died like that , end of story, but ImperialX does have a point there... he could be "dead" to the world and no one's ever gonna see him again as himself but C.C.

"In addition, the name "Lelouch vi Britannia" is included in the magazine's final death list. In the November 2008 issue of Newtype magazine, Director Goro Taniguchi left it up to the audience to interpret the series finale and what its epilogue meant."

So i can consider a possibility

Well Okouchi and Taniguichi may have said that Lelouch is dead but Sunrise apparently has a different opinion.

From the January 2009 issue of Animedia magazine;

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/wp-content/gallery/misc-images-xiii/img_1032045_22102323_0.jpg

Translation:

"You have all shown us a lot of kind appreciation in making the DVDs and CDs so popular.
We were truly blessed to have such passionate fans…truly, thank you all.
Lelouch may have died (?) but Geass itself will not.
The show has just ended, yet we feel it might be a good idea to make something else.
In any case, we might be able to announce something in the near future…"

The (?) is not my addition it is as it appears in the article.

Bandai/Sunrise owns the rights to Code Geass therefore they are the only real "Word of God" on this matter and their statement of "Lelouch may have died" with the (?) is enough for me to see where this is going for them.

Sunrise is a business, they're in this for the money not some philisophical ideals, and that means that Lelouch is probably alive in their view (in order to continue the show); and after the OVA recaps of the show are complete they'll start on a new project with this character in it (exactly like what they did for Gundam 0079, first the TV show, then the OVAs, then Zeta Gundam).

Sunrise is notorious for doing this and they're also notorious for replacing writers and directors that get in their way (a la Gundam 0083 where they went through like 3 or 4 directors before that one was over). So even tho Okouchi and Taniguichi have both said CG is over...it's only over for them not Sunrise.

Whether or not

I found myself appreciated the zero sum aspect of the story very impressive.

Ever since Lelou found out that Nunnaly was still alive and he proclaimed that everything he did he did for himself, each episode made me more insanely enraged than the last. Lelouch then became a crazed murderer, a "destroyer of worlds" with nothing that could stand between him and his goal. I myself hated him and when I saw the prisoners on the execution cart I knew this was not the same Lelouch as we had met in the first season.

The stories in the "tween" episodes with Charles and the revelations that came with him were horrible. It derailed the story, dividing it between defeating his father and the actual domination of Britania - previously I saw them as one and the same - crushing the emperor and destroying the empire itself.
By throwing in Lelou's brother as the new villain the show lost some appeal to me. I thought Lelou's father was a perfectly vile character and I wanted to see him broken. It was not the end I expected for him

But the ending made me appreciate the story-plot as a whole. From CC's desire for a human friendship, to Euphy's avenged death, Nunnaly got her "future" handed to her on a plater and the world got a hero to idolize forever. It really was a wonderful conclusion

I loved this series and the ending! It had some weird twists to it, I think. I didn't expect Jeremiah to partner with Lelouch. I just ended up hating Rolo soley because he killed Shirley. I really liked her, and I thought that she and Lelouch had something good going on, but that little asshole had to kill her.

I just got really sad when Zero came out of nowhere and stabbed Lelouch, not because Lelouch "died", but because Nunally would be alone.

And yes, I don't think Lelouch is dead. I think he's immortal now. He has Charles' Code and C.C.'s Geass, which means he achieved Code Geass. I'm pretty sure this whole thing was explained already in an earlier post.

All in all, I really enjoyed this anime. :)
