90s isn't accurate either, that's just Masami Obari's style.

90s anime was pretty angular. But I like how in Gundam 0083, it represented a good mix of the 80s and 90s styles with the designs.

Anime these days I am shocked to learn when a character is a guy. At least in Fushigi Yuugi they intended Nuriko to look like a woman. I prefer the CLAMP of the 90s to the CLAMP now.

I like the way the eyes are drawn in the 90's better then in the 00s, but overal I still choose for the thinner lines so 00s for me.

i like both
well i guess sometimes the face designs of the 90s look weird an even deformed but to be fair so did some anime from the 2000s like Code Geass or Clannad
as for the 2000s i dislike how so many characters (particularly male) look the same

I love 'em both. It kinda pisses me off when people complain about the old artstlye. A lot of the best anime came out in the 90s.

I prefer 90s to 2010s. But my favorite art style period goes roughly from 1998~2006.

Nowadays characters look so plain and boring. They look like characters from visual novels, all digital and clichéd. And they are way too colorful. And usually with no distinguishing features. Even those mouths that are just a line that is erased at the middle get on my nerves. And I also don't like when eyebrows are just a line.

I most certainly prefer the newer art, but only the characters that don't have huge, moe-fied eyes.

For example,

is better ( IMO ) than this, for example:

And overall, nowadays art is more visually appealing, more detailed.

For example:

Though I might be using bad examples.

Ill take any art style/character design, be it old/dated or whatever ,compared to nowadays K-On style for instance, any day of the week.

K-On,So Ra No Wo To ,Tamako Market ,Hyouka,Kokoro Connect,Chuunibyou....
Seriously enough is enough, you cant tell where one series end and where the other one starts.
I sometimes watch chinese cartoons/stuff and share unsolicited opinions.

yep i think you are using bad examples... why are you comparing male designs vs female designs? i dont need to use a different anime, here are your huge moe-fied eyes

as for the background comparisson, why not use another city? instead of comparing it to a completely different place like Namek

Fine, I have some other examples:

Here is male with overly huge eyes:

Here are some females with not so huge moe eyes.

Though it really is hard to find a female character in today's anime who would not have overly big eyes. In the end, you can't run away from these huge eyes anymore, because every anime has them, but as I said I prefer characters ( judging by art only ) who have normal eyes.

But about the backgrounds, without a doubt today's anime wipes the floor with old anime backgrounds.

you are aware that Clannad is like a 2008-2009 anime right? if anything we should be considering it a newer anime, certainly it has nothing to do with 80s or 90s anime
an i wouldnt mention it anyways since it has some of the ugliest character designs ive ever seen, its cherrypicking

But I compared only newer anime characters in my second post, to be exact, females and males. Whatever.

is Akira art even that particularly spectacular? animation wise sure it stomps on almost everything else out there by faaar so i wouldnt use it as an animation comparisson but art wise i thought it was fair an i dont mind he used KNK as an example either, i picked it cause its one of the few old anime ive seen that feature city enviroments (other one i can think of is GITS but once again high budget movie), most of what ive seen are either set in the space or desert wastelands

Thin lines is the way to go. tho I like the noses from the 90's tho.

New is best imo but 90's can be cool too. females are beter looking now tho. but maybe Im just watching the wrong animes but I feel like females nowadays dont look as mature when compared to 90's females. So i do miss the mature look the 90's had for pretty much every character, males included. they lookin more n more younger n childlike when even in high school they look like they still in 1st year of primary school lol.

There are plenty of older women in today's anime that they could have used.

Not really. We can't say that thre are only 12 year old girls in anime, but young teen girls ( and boys for that matter ) just dominate nowadays anime.

To bad that most of the "girls in anime then" are just as bland ,annoying,bi-polar or uninteresting as you find in most series nowadays....

None of the characters are interesting in anime overall. Maybe a few, but overall normal characters are rarity in anime. That's probably because, in the end, anime is sort of targeted for younger audience.

There are still plenty of female anime characters that look mature in modern anime.

And honestly more than half of the characters in "girls in anime then" look like immature brats still. And teen characters dominated anime back then as well.

There are modern anime with adult looking female characters such as the female characters from Bleach like Rangiku, Yoruichi etc. The example I gave was a cherry picked counter to sullnathan's cherry picked example.

Both have their ups and downs.

But most people here haven't really grounded their animation based on the best of the best of each decade. A lot of what is being shown is comparing the good of one decade to the bad of another.
That's not how it works.

For Example:
Whether you like it or not, this show was made in the 60s. It's called "Attack No.1" or known throughout most of Europe as "Mila Superstar", the animation remained consistently high in quality and is a genuine landmark for the development of Japanese animation, attracting audiences all over Japan and later in Europe, it was not for having consistently high quality animation for a period of 104 episodes.

Going onto the 70s, a standout in animation achievement was "3000 Leagues in Search of Mother which was one of the efforts of Isao Takahata and a part of his claim to fame around the world before the likes of "Grave of the Fireflies". The series was noted for having very detailed backgrounds, and very smooth hand-drawn animation for the entire 52 episode run-time.

Going into the 80s. The height of animation was most noted with the critically acclaimed, Akira, with explicit attention to detail and had the smoothest scene movement anime had scene up to that point for a major motion picture.

Then the 90s saw its height in animation with Ghost in the Shell's movie premier, whilst it lacked the smoothness that Akira's animation had, it made up for it with the sheer attention to background detail.

Then compare these to what we have today.
