Mostly everyone is accounted for now. There are some loose ends, like whatever the heck Burgess is doing and obviously the Big Mam plotline, but wow this is a climax. This entire episode was the final push. All the stakes were set, Sugar was the biggest threat imaginable, a little girl, that Law and Luffy both didn’t know, and whomst could take them both out in a single touch. If Law wanted to be safe, he should have just cut her in half and went back to her later, but he didn’t do that, and she did amazing. Her acting was on point, she went from straight psycho to an ugly crying baby in a second flat and she was pretty cute when she was pouting. I was questioning why she was taking so long but I suppose sudden movements may actually result in the Law cutting her in half to be a safe scenario, and without knowledge of God Usopp’s insane ability, she had nothing to fear. She played it safe and played an amazing character as well. While that was going on, we had everyone defend Usopp together while refusing to hurt the citizens, even Kanjuro joined in as Kin’emon’s ally and they stood together making a blockade. While this was happening and Sugar got closer and closer to Luffy, Viola and Usopp showed how amazing they were working together.
Viola was able to give Usopp every single detail necessary to shoot something that far away. That on top of his Nami-esque ability to read the wind and put that information together, sporting a specifically made weapon with a long range launching shell, meant he had every tool necessary to do this. It honestly made me want her to join the crew, she has such an amazing ability. But that wasn’t enough, for Usopp to do this he needed to have courage, the moment of him shaking and nearly crying was a great addition because it reminded us that he’s human, that the pressure that if he misses this shot then they won’t even know they lost their hope and his friend was crushing. But before even tapping into what I can only imagine is observational haki, he pulled himself together on will alone, it was impressive. As for if that was observational haki, to fit with the consistent blue color palette, it made me realize that I bet every God sniper out there uses it, and it makes sense that now is when Usopp would tap in. He trained hard for two years, and further, haki comes out when people need it most when it’s innate and untrained. He tapped into it and saw the aura of the three and that was the final step as he fired his shot.
Yet again Usopp-Sugar reminds me of Usopp-Perona in a sense. The other reasons have already been stated but even in this moment, Usopp was put in a situation where he was the only person who could fight against the opponent as the opponent has a skill that the others could not counter. A difference is this time was due to ignorance, not the negative hollows, but it still created the same dynamic. Further, the way Usopp took both Perona and Sugar out was by scaring them to the point of passing out, he traumatized Perona with cockroaches in a fake bowling ball and a huge fake hammer and he re-traumatized Sugar by having Kanjuro paint his face when he ate the spicy grape. That is such an amazing choice, to make the traumatized Sugar be more than a joke, but the second way Usopp took her down. Some people may have criticized God Usopp for his cowardice when Robin had turned and his win of luck when he first took Sugar down, I am not one such person, yet I hope here, as he took the 2nd round against her with pure skill, that people have come around to him. His role in Dressrosa is fantastic and the way he did this for Luffy, and everyone realized how amazing he was as they congratulated him and they got caught, no longer needing to fight, it was sweet. So sweet. Even if Luffy doesn’t know it, Usopp is so glad to have kept him safe.
This led to the ramification of Gladius now being alone and surrounded by his opponents which is not good for him, and for Luffy and Law to progress. They landed directly in front of Doflamingo and Trebol, most of the executives are fighting the contestants, Diamante is busy with Kyros, Pica with Zoro, and it looks like we’re about to start this two versus two battle. The pose of Luffy and Law standing in the wind in front of the two, Doflamingo sitting and Trebol with snot pouring out of his nose was so dynamic and cool and this was just such a beautiful way to lead into this confrontation. These last two episodes have kept this sense of excitement strong.
Edit: I just wanted to edit this post because this episode was so awesome and I didn't rightfully express everything. It felt too much like summary in retrospect. This represents how Usopp has lived up to both of his names, God Usopp and Usoland. How he's literally saved this country twice! As much as Luffy is Dressrosa's hope, Usopp is the glue holding Dressrosa together and he was recognized for that. I liked the little things, like Usopp saying he didn't want to imagine a sea without Luffy. Or the fact that his balloon etched into the palace wall, signifying that he's just left a mark in history, an odd face that few will understand but which represents his fight, humorously coming off as possibly a rebellious teens graffiti on the kings wall. The big moments of the slow shot flying through the sky gave such a sense of scale, it let us feel firsthand how shocking his sniping was. I'm sure a lot of this is my inherent love for Usopp but I think it's been well done and I'm just proud of my boy. I also love how hilarious Sugar passing out was after such a heartfelt and dramatic moment, once again meshing the humour to enhance everything else! |
