Several of them, since most of it are.. (well u know, not intended for kids to play it XD)

Play it because sometimes the storyline and art is good enough and can be the alternative to anime.

yes i play them, i've only recently gotten into them, and i've heard almost nothing but praise for "Kana - Little Sister" which many say is the only game they've played and cried

and i have a question i hope someone will answer well, is there a difference between visual novel, dating sim, eroge, and galges? or are they all the same?

The way I understand it, Visual Novel is just that. A novel with pictures, and a few choices here and there. Dating sims are just that. Simulated dating. Eroge I suppose could fall under either, but has h-content. Never even heard of that last one.

Also known as Monster in a box, but I hate that handle...and it doesn't fit here.

Yeah, my favourites are story heavy though. Fate Stay Night, Planetarian (which is nothing but story), Narcissu. But that's not all I played.

I play Visual Novels especially those from Type-Moon and Key...
I've played: Tsukihime, Planetarian, Kagetsu Tohya(trying to finish it), F/SN(just waiting for HF scenario to be translated), F/HA(just skimmed through it T_T)
I'm just waiting for the translation of Tomoyo After and Clannad before playing them...haha!

I finished 6/9 of Tsukihime and considered playing FSN but ultimately, it's a tremendous waste of time and you're far better off looking at a plot summary and the softcore porno picz.

First one I played was Planetarian, I loved it. :( After that I downloaded and played a few of the translated freebie ones, some of them were pretty good.

I've downloaded some of the Key ones, and some others but haven't played them.

Also have Tsukihime, Utawarerumono, and Fate/stay night that I need to play since they have translation patches.

The only visual novel I've played all the way through at least once was Animamundi. It's one of my favourites, but I recently uninstalled it to make room on my Laptop. :(

The other visual novel I've started is Tea Society of a Witch, but I haven't played it all the way through yet.

I don't think so since all PS2 versions of any visual novel is automatically not hentai, but may be ecchi anyways.

Pretty much. Apart from doujin games (a lot of which also contain hentai scenes) and the console market (which is mostly ports with the h-content removed) pretty much all commercial VN will contain them. With a few exceptions, such as the recently released Chaos;HEAd by Nitro+ or some of the later Key games.

If you're looking for visual novels without adult content in English I would suggest taking a look at the games released by Hirameki, especially Ever 17 and Phantom of Inferno are liked by many.

Reviving an older topic.

There are quite a few VN that lack adult content, although it's true that the great majority of them use hentai as a selling point. For non-H series, I'd recommend of most KID's works, especially the Infinity Series (Never 7: The End of Infinity, Ever 17: The Out of Infinity, Remember 11: The Age of Infinity). Their latest work, 12Riven ―the Ψcliminal of integral―, doesn't seem to have h-content either. I'm playing Remember 11 right now and it doesn't have a renai focus either, unlike the previous Infinity titles.

I did a little writeup (spoiler free) of my experience playing my first visual novel.

Kap's Utawarerumono

It was one of those game types that I passed on because I figured it was nothing more than point and click hentai with still images. I was wrong!

i love visual novels, dont understand all dialogues but still it did improve my japanese i think.
normally i dont really like to read books~~, but visual novels is really different.
Its a combination from a movie and audio books.
Its really great because its also a game, i always feel that i am the maincharacter. And i can decide where i want to go or where i want to end with, so its not a movie or book where you only have one ending.

i really like visual novels

i've finished playing utawarerumono recently.
it was pretty good, visual novel and strategy game.

i'm currently reading fate stay night, still good after watching the anime.
of course in english translated version.
i am a bastard perfectionist >.< i want to see every scene, i alway go chose all possibilities by dying and loading. XD

but vn... i would not really call them a games, maybe a kind of game, boh... vn is vn.
yes, they take a lot of time i read everythng and try to struggle when it is boring.

vns should get more popular :p more good ones should be coming out!

I play lots of visual novels, but they all are BL or otome games. Currently I'm playing Hoshizora no Comic Garden on DS.. it seems cute enough. My favorite is Hanakisou on PS2. It's a fantasy themed story, not particularly BL.

Clannad (Normal Story Complete + Some extras)
Kanon (Complete)
Air (On Hold, i would say. Lol)
Planetarian (Complete)
Utawarerumono (Complete)
Castle Fantasia 2 Renewal (Complete)
Men @ Work 4 (Not done yet)

I wish I could, but I can't. Can't read Japanese yet, and seeing my computer doesn't show the kanji etc, I can't even look up things.
I saw some that are translated to english, but haven't tried those, most of the time the site is either down or it takes ages before I get to the site.

If displaying kanji is really something holding you back, there's typically a quick fix depending upon your operating system. If it's something like XP Pro, you can do it through the control panel easily. You can also use programs like Anime Games Text Hooker to extract the text from many games and paste it into translating software like Atlas (even automatically) or an online dictionary. I know lots of people who play visual novels and don't know any Japanese. So if you really want to, try it. ;)

Yes, I like ones in which I get to make most decisions rather than the game being linear like CLANNAD. In fact, I prefer games to be a mix of both visual novel and RPG, sort of like the Growlanser series.

Currently, I am playing Growlanser II, even though I had originally started its sequel first but after learning that I can import characters from a cleared save file of its prequel.. I have to finish Growlanser II before I start Growlanser III. Unlike Growlanser III, the random encounters are rather lame and occurs very rarely which makes most of my characters to be very under-leveled.

Perhaps, you can't really count the Growlanser series as a visual novel. I am also playing Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica which is somewhat like a visual novel with RPG elements but it is listed in the RPG section. Thus, here are better examples:

Yume Miru Kusuri, Narcissu, Nocturnal Illusion and of course the classic True Love '95 are all also great.

I didn't like Ever 17 very much and I have Planetarian waiting to be played.

I have played several but I usually get bored with them quickly. Probably because if too many words I don't know are used in a row, I loose the flow and feel too much like I am decoding, not playing/reading it.

Most of the novels I've played have a corresponding anime I have seen, or at least plan to see.

Yes, I do play visual novels. I think I started when I found out that AIR was based on one. Here's a list of the ones I have (in no particular order):
AIR - only finished Misuzu's Route, others aren't translated in mine.
CLANNAD - finished Fuko, Tomoyo, Kotomi, reference room girl (forgot name), Nagisa (I thought, but I didn't get an orb), and... I think that's it so far. Can't do Kyou's or Ryou's for the life of me. (can someone help me out?)
Kanon (Standard Edition) - Not fully translated so I haven't finished it.
Little Busters! - Not translated so I've just played around with it.
ONE - can't figure this one out.
Wanko to Kurasou (demo) - finished.
True Tears (demo) - finished.
Narcissu - finished
Narcissu 2 (demo) - finished
planetarian (Kinetic Novel) - finished
School Days - see "Little Busters!"

I think that's it.
