i don't even know how to vote. its really not a matter of preferring a happy or unhappy ending, its what is appropriate to that anime. It should make some sort of sense within the context of the show. sometimes theres a suddenl happy ending to a rather dark anime. that pisses me off.

The question wasn't if you prefer happy or sad endings, but if you like sad endings. Like taketori, some people rather see a forced happy ending then a decent sad.

erm, still don't get it. thanks though. do i like sad endings? yes. IF they are appropriate to the show!! I'll retract the "sudden happy ending" gripe ;)

Some people don't like sad endings even if they are appropriate to the show, get it now?

Some things just feel right. A lot of the time Happy Endings feel forced and unbelievable.

The biggest cop-out though is an inconclusive ending, with no/minimal chance of a second season.

I like good endings that feel like a proper finish to what came before. If it's forced, it won't be as good, happy or sad. But I do have a weird enjoyment of sad/dark/depressing endings. I don't know why.

are you for reals sad endings are an old cliche! most greek stories end tragically and i feel that most sad endings defeat the point of the story. bitter sweet endings are ok.

by the way give me deus ex machina any day than that Diabolus ex Machina/ Shaggy Dog Story crap people call a good show!

its stupid makes me feel that i wasted my time, and that the story had no meaning.

if you feel like being emo/masochist fine with me!

Those who undergo suffering and spread it to others. And those who undergo suffering and avoid giving it to others." -Alice

“Evil is created when someone gives up on someone else. It appears when everyone gives up on someone as a lost cause and removes their path to salvation. Once they are cut off from everyone else, they become evil.” -Othinus

Sincerely, you just can't call an ending cliche just because its sad or happy, there are millions of different sad and happy endings. Thats like calling an anime cliche because the main character is a dude. As for greeks overdoing sad endings, get your facts straight, they're the ones who came up with Deus Ex Machina and they often do Deus Ex happy endings, specially Euripedes. The only sad ending I can remember right now is Oedipus the King.

I don't think appreciating sad endings has anything to do with you being emo or masochist, but accepting different kinds of story. Why the story will have no meaning because of Its sad ending? Its quite realistic, not everything ends up in a happy way, so why animes should?

Since Its all a matter of personal taste, please, don't bash does who enjoy sad endings, we aren't necessarily emos or masochists.

I don't understand why people mention Clannad here though, it didn't have any sad ending at all, hell, any tragedy it had got washed away with the end.

But it depends, the important thing is that the ending is well written and follows logically from the rest of the plot, whether it is sad, happy or bittersweet doesn't matter.
Texhnolyze for example had a great downer ending, but it's not as if you didn't expect it. Similarly, LoGH's bittersweet ending was pretty much the only logical conclusion to the story.

Clannad didn't have too much of a sad ending or impact on me, it was Clannad: After Story
And they all lived happily ever after.

I don't mind sad endings. But the ending has to fit the anime.

I don't like sad, I like wrist-cuttingly sad endings. Like, "why the hell was this anime even created?" sad endings.

There is only one show that did this, Texhnolyze. I gave up on life for lyke a week after seeing it.

Idk man, the ending was definitely bittersweet but that last scene was pretty much the happiest part of the whole series, symbolized how they could start over and all.

Anyway voted yes, idk about people hating endings for being sad but I liked most if not all of them, they usually proved how the series can have the balls to do something shocking and still succeed. I heard some people hated the Chrono Crusade ending for exemple but to me it's what saved the series, it had a pretty great story that was overshadowed by bad comedy and harmed by the too fast pace, shoulda been something like 50 episodes long to truly flesh out the story. The ending is what truly gave value to the story.

Well, I'm thinking about the whole franchise of course. And the second season still didn't have anything near a sad ending. Sure, if they didn't hammer in the "happy ever after" thing all of a sudden, it would have remained a "shoot the Shaggy dog" ending, which would also be pretty silly. On the other hand, if it had...

...it would have been great, and really capitalized on all the themes that it built up towards, rather than flushing them all down the toilet as it did.

Clannad didn't have a happy ending at all. The last episode is nothing more than a glorified recap of the entire story as told by Tomoya to Ushio. It did little to nothing to relieve people of the intense sadness that occurred during After Story.

If you think Clannad had a sad ending, I dare you to watch Air. Air is the god-tier of sad endings. You'll cry like a bitch.

Ontopic, I love sad endings. They destroy me, but they leave a far more lasting impact than traditional happy endings.

Well I went and watched Air. It was good yes, but I really think that being only 13 episodes long stunted what it could have been. It had an extremely sad premise behind it, but I actually finished it smiling.

HUGE SPOILERS. Don't read this if you haven't seen AIR already.

So, in all, I very much agree with Baman in saying it was very bittersweet, but in my mind, more on the sweet side. It had extremely sad moments, yes, but when you look at the series as a whole and what it was about, it's ending is actually quite happy. If anything, you should be shedding tears of hapiness, not sadness.

Depends. But most of the time i prefer sad endings because it makes an anime better and emotional things feel great. Happy endings usually dont have that effect. Usually..
