The reason this show caught my attention in the first place was because of Kamasi Washington and Floating Point's involvement in the soundtrack. And the music did not disappoint. Show is obviously cashing in hard on Cowboy Bebop nostalgia, but I can't exactly complain about that either. Solid animation and character designs (my favorite so far is Eleina), and a really interesting premise.

Great first episode, both the music and animation are smooth like a baby butt and deliver these nostalgic signature vibes one would expect of Watanabe.

Parkour sequence was allright. Im not a fan of the wonderdrug plot device.

We can all see this is just trying to milk cowboy bebop right? you don't actually believe there is any soul in this show?

@PettankoLover Obviously it's heavily influenced by bebop aesthetically. But the plot and setting don't seem to be similar at all? Like are we saying a show can't have soul because it is influenced by an older extremely popular show?

Watanabe you’ve done it again. Yes yes yes, love everything about this. That first minute or so of the intro told me all I needed to know. This’ll be another classic.

No one told me Chad Stahelski, who did the action for the Matrix and John Wick franchises, was on this?!! You really see the Wick vibes in the fight scenes too!! It’s crazy how Watanabe’s star power can bring in anyone. In addition to setting the stage for the world’s most intense game of hide and seek to stop Skinner, this felt like MAPPA showcasing just what we can expect from this series production wise. Axel’s fight in the prison felt very John Wick-y, the rooftop chase scene was great and that soundtrack was sooo fucking good. Just what we’ve come to expect from Watanabe’s works.

The whole time I couldn’t help but laugh tho cause ain’t no way in hell I’m taking a medication that stops you from feeling pain. I mean pain is your body’s natural alarm bell so if you’re having a heart attack or any other serious issue you’re fucked if you don’t have any pain sent to your brain lmao. I wonder what percentage of the planet has taken it in this show ๐Ÿค”

“Can I take a picture with you” yea I’m not gonna lie I’m 100 percent folding there so fair enough axel. Welcome to Lazarus lol. Great start, hate the JP/EN situation with this one tho. Max get the EN dub and won’t have JP till 30 days after.

Let me preface this by saying that I liked the first episode and I'm excited for the rest of the show... BUT... they missed the mark on a lot of important things for me. To keep it simple; the world building is being conducted from the outside in and that just doesn't work for me. I need a connection to the characters before I have a curiosity about the world, and I need to understand the world before I care about the events of the show. Telling me everyone is going to die before I know anything about the world or care about the characters just feels... flat. Additionally, there was no emotion. The world is freaking ending! Why does nobody care? It definitely seems like they're trying to portray people as being cool for not caring (ala IGN review) but it just feels edgy and dumb. Also, as cool as the parkour was, I need an explanation for why he can move that way - especially since other people seemingly can't. Spike moves that way in Cowboy Bebop specifically with the assistance of low-G or zero-G environments, super space drugs, and gadgets. It was a little immersion breaking.

Edit: Also... what the eff was the dialogue? Is that a translation issue with the dub? Feels like a highschooler wrote it.

As beautiful as this first episode is, it reeks of the same incoherence that plagued Bucchigiri, the end of Zenshuu, and Studio Bones's Metallic Rouge. Hoping this one actually goes somewhere with its amazing visuals.

I can say that most of MAPPA's original anime have terrible scripts! The first episode has beautiful visuals and smooth animation, but... a drug that leads to the end of the world, and the solution is just finding the creator? Then a whole episode of the main character running around the city showing off his 'peak' skills, only to get caught by a pretty dumb trick? He gets sentenced to 888 years in prison, escapes from both prison and a high-tech pursuit team, only to fall for that trap? I really can't bring myself to look forward to the next episodes. We'll probably just get more visually stunning action scenes—and that's it!!

Wowwww, this was way cooler than what I was expecting.

First things first, I wasn't expecting the english dub. It makes sense since the anime is clearly inspired by the West, but it's weird watching an anime with English dub, since I usually watch anime with the original Japanese voice actors, subbed.
Anyways, the voice acting was ok, although that older Lady from the beginning really seems like an AI talking, like, I can't unhear the AI now.

The setting for this anime is quite unique: a doctor that creates a drug that is really good, because it makes people not feel any pain or have any disease, but in reality, it was all a plan for him to extinguish the human race, as people who have taken the drug will die within 3 years. All of this because this Doctor believes the human race has commited enough crimes against Nature, and has to pay for its sins now.
This is honestly quite understandable, but I wonder if the Doctor also took that pill...

The Main Character is Axel, that, so far, as captivated my interest, it seems it's going to be quite a fun character. Also, he's 23, an anime main character that is an adult (particularly being older than 20) is always something to celebrate. He's quite agile, and I don't know why he was in prison, besides having escaped many times from prison (I mean, he had to be there once without that accusation), but I'm sure we'll get that info soon.
We also got introduced to the other characters, that are a group called "Lazarus" (role the credits"), and we don't know their motivations, but I'm sure we'll get to know them really soon.

But it seems Lazarus are after that said Doctor, for him to give them the cure for that drug. And they needed Axel's help, because, well, we all saw how good he was.

Obviously, the big standout of this episode were all the action scenes. They were incredible, and it was so cool seeing such Parkour skills. I'm sure they will maintain this level of quality for the next episodes, so I'm seeing that this anime will be a fest to our eyes! The artstyle is also very fitting for a futuristic anime, that draws inspiration by older anime like Cowboy Bebop.

Despite everyone wanting to capture him, Axel didn't kill anyone, which might indicate that he is indeed a good boy, only with an attitude.

I'm really curious to see how this anime will develop its story, but I feel like this anime has a lot of potential! It will certainly be one of the standouts of this year in terms of anime. Can't wait for next week to see how Axel will adapt by being forced into the group Lazarus!

I feel like I made a good choice by choosing this anime to watch for this Spring Season!

Edit: The ending song was good! It certainly fits the vibe they are going for with this anime!
2nd Edit: Just discovered the ending song is actually from 1993, that's crazy! But it does fit the vibe of the anime!

I knew nothing of the plot before starting the show, and I'm really glad I went in blind, I got to be surprised by the plot, which I found pretty compelling, and I thought the ensemble of characters works very well together. I can't wait to watch them interact more, and see their different dynamics play out!

The animation is fluid and the world feels well-thought-out and cool. I'm really enjoying this so far!

Also, the music is dope! The jazz during that fight scene was a nice touch. Strong Cowboy Bebop vibes, of course.

I don't know why people liked it honestly...

Plot is like the most typical thing you can write which was explored countless of time: humanity is bad to itself (too aggressive) and hurts the environment so I (this super smart scientist this time) will play god and kill you all unless you will find me. Like what? Why finding you changes anything and why all of the humanity and not like idk some rich people who probably contribute to this the most.
And Axel is basically a Mugen from Samurai Champloo, it feels like Watanabe just can't write characters different to the one he already wrote before.

Overall I'm having huge Ninja Kamui vibes rn. At least in terms how they prioritize pretty action above the story and characters development.

The synopsis was promising, I had high expectation. After the first episode, I think they were trying to create the next anime for a niche audience like Cowboy Bebop, but they failed.

I don't think this anime has enough personality to succeed.

I'm not a fan of bebop, so I'm concerned a little bit when I learn that this anime want to be it, made by the very same people. Turns out I've nothing to concern because the high quality production from MAPPA can compensate for any lack of convincing story.

This episode raises a question if a delayed lethal drug is really possible. I think it can be made. But if annihilating humanity is your goal there are dozens of easier way to do it so I guess this Skinner guy might have other goal...
phantomfandom said:

Totally, because it wouldn't even make sense for him to say he has a cure, and that he will give it to who finds him, if his objective was to kill humanity off.

The animation is good but I'm not a fan of how they did the exposition dump, and we're being introduced to a lot of characters very quickly. Seems rather rushed. Some of the dialog also felt incredibly awkward.

I feel this too! My biggest complaints about this 1st episode really are the dub and the way they introduced the anime, it didn't really feel natural, and really just an exposition of what's happening. It's actually the only part I was disappointed with the anime, since I feel it's too soon to take any conclusion from the story just yet.

It was a really entertaining episode when you ignore all the people in your ear yapping about Cowboy Bebop this, Cowboy Bebop that. The voice acting is completely fine too other than Hersch, she’s the only one that I’d consider to be actually bad

I don’t know what to say about it. The first episode of as a it peculiar, with no many details included about how he got arrested and why.

We can understand that he’s a pro assassin and law breaker, but I have to see more to get it. On the other hand, the animation is low-budget.

I mean It’s Shinichiro Wantanabe, one of my fav Directors. Guy’s got a Mind for the Anime Biz. Also a fun fact about the making of this show, saw a post on X that said this:

“When Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop) was approached by Adult Swim to fully fund his next anime project, he initially proposed the idea of making an anime similar to Space Dandy. Producer Jason Demarco shot down the idea, as he said the network was looking for a more "serious" production. Watanabe was given full control of the production as long as it was serious, and it eventually resulted in the upcoming Lazarus.”

So yeah, he is quite the serious man
Glad to see the reaction on here seems generally better than what I was reading on Reddit. I do agree that it has its share of issues, and I can definitely see why it may not grab everyone as much as they may have hoped for. When you have a show by Watanabe, along with some of the other names attached, it can raise expectations to higher levels. But just on its own merits, I'd say it's off to a very nice start. Love the soundtrack, and most of the animation is great (with a few bumps along the way. It's hard to judge the story itself, since it does feel like we're just getting starting. Really looking forward to seeing where the story goes, and how they handle the group dynamic. Hopefully it only gets better from here.

That being said...

As much as I like how it's turned out, I kind of hate knowing this. I was just thinking recently that I'd love to see Watanabe go lighter again, with more of a Space Dandy vibe. What could have been... Hopefully he'll get the chance again in the future.

The fluidity of the animation and the art style really look nice. It’s obvious that effort has been put into it, everything is quite neat and eye-catching. The story seems a bit cliché, but if they manage to blend it well, they could come up with something enjoyable. It definitely has potential, and I’m curious to see what direction they’ll take in the upcoming episodes.

What an odd premise.

A drug that apparently nobody knows anything about, including the active chemical compounds apparently, not only passes the million and one checks needed to get it approved BUT is so successful that literally everyone on earth took it.

Not a mandatory vaccine, not a treatment for a specific disease. It's a "pain killer"....

I feel like this was initially made about the covid vaccine but got told it would WILL count as fear mongering so they went "ummmmm panadol, it's panadol then!" They could have at least had the courage to go full Brave New World and call it SOMA saying it's addictive or something. Nope, it's magic panadol XD

Oh boy, we have very clever MC here!

Walking in the streets without any sort of face cover? โ˜‘
Trying to escape police drones by parkouring? โ˜‘
And choosing rooftops where everyone can spot and chase him? โ˜‘
Taking selfies with some random people? โ˜‘

Yeah, very very smart...

Main "villain" with "here, I did some bad stuff, now catch me if you can" game? โ˜‘
"Super capable unique and edgy" motley crew to counter him? โ˜‘

Nope, not at all cliché.

On a serious note tho: It does not feel very promising to me tbh.
And I doubt Cowboy Bebop-ish art style and jazz theme will be enough to save it :/
