The term "shounen" refers just to the magazine demographic, what many people here are saying is "shounen" is the genre "battle shounen". These overlap, since battle shounen is the most common type of manga for these magazines but they are very different things.

Seinen is also a demographic, which includes stuff like K-ON, and not just stuff like Vagabond or Berserk.

@Anifan01 shonens, seinens, etc are labels for what magazine it was release

Shounen is a Japanese term. It means boy. YLIA is not a shounen. It’s a slice of life or romance. I’m not talking about technicality here. Cause you are right since it was released in shounen magazine it’s technically right to call it a shounen but anyone who has seen YLIA will not think of Shounen when you ask them what genre it is. The whole point of genre is to give you an idea of what the story is about and saying YLIA is Shounen doesn’t give you that idea because YLIA is a Romance, a tragedy a slice of life, music related anime and even comedy to some extent. Same for Frieren. If you ask someone what genre Frieren is ain’t nobody gonna say it’s Shounen. Frieren is fantasy, slice of life hell it’s not even action even though it has action in it because the action is not the main focus of the story.

damn, that is so much misinformation

Frieren is not shounen. Your lie in April is not shounen. Why the hell are people giving examples of shounen with anime that aren’t shounen. In recent times only really unique shounen I can think of is Mob Psycho 100 (Vinland Saga or AoT aren’t shounen either).

Aot is shounen bruh

@Anifan01 Whatever dude.

If it's serialized in shonen magazine then it's shonen.

@Anifan01 And who decides what's written for boys and what's written for girls? Classifying action for boys and romance for girls is an arbitrary stereotype. The only way to objectively separate shounen from shoujo is from the publishing company alone.

It reminds me a lot of the plot of To Your Eternity but less sad.

The categorization of anime genres like "shounen" can sometimes become blurred due to various factors, including the targeted audience, themes, and storytelling style. While some shows may seem to fit within the shounen genre, others might diverge due to their narrative complexities, character development, or thematic elements. "Your Lie in April" and "Frieren" may not strictly adhere to the conventional shounen tropes, yet they offer rich storytelling and appeal to a broader audience base with their unique narratives. In the case of recent notable shounen, "Mob Psycho 100" stands out for its distinctive storyline, while series like "Vinland Saga" and "Attack on Titan" might have elements of shounen but also incorporate themes that extend beyond typical shounen narratives.

not all shounen are battle shounen.

Exactly 💯
Shonen animes are mainly power based with binaries of "good guys vs bad guys" but are generally executed via battle systems and use that for it's story telling 😉
So it's interesting seeing a Shonen that doesn't fixate on that

@Revvie-chan It does because manga is published in Weekly Shounen Sunday, but people really need to understand that it's not a genre and does't specify anything about the plot.
