Yep they did skip the training sub arc but given that was five entire chapters long its a necessary sacrifice.

They could’ve condensed it some, rather than outright skipping

Maybe.

Though given how much was explained within those chapters i have a feeling that condensing it would have caused further problems within the narrative. And from a anime perspective i don't think there will be many that will be willing to sit through a entire episode or episodes that explained the events if that arc.

Remember this season is only 13 episodes compared to the 25 that the first season had. The studios don't have the luxury of time here.

Seeing the old granny unleash her crescent moon technique on the monsters looked impressive in terms of production values, but the other parts of the episode lacked that treatment.

The CGI used for the tortoise looked fine, model wise. However, its movements, most of the time, were choppy in terms of frames and that can be a little disappointing. Regardless, I do like the combo attack of Raphtalia and Filo as it looked like they were successful in beheading the tortoise.

However, the fact that Ost hasn't disappeared means that the tortoise is still not dead yet. It'll be interesting to see how the next episode will play out. This one was good, but it wasn't great as I hoped it would be.

How to spoil if I've never read the manga/LN for Shield Hero kek.

I never bought Ost's introduction as "helping Naofumi take down the Spirit Tortoise as a task as its familiar" as that just sounds fishy af and this episode further cements my theory that she actually is the one behind its rampage for unknown motives as of yet

You know what, this ain't too bad actually. I still find it all slightly cringe, but that's no issue in the broader scope of things. The only thing I would've change is the introduction the the spirit tortoise itself. It is shown briefly before the actual encounter, but it's when our characters lay their eyes on it that really matters.

Perhaps I'd have the army lying in wait, seeing nothing, but hearing the thundering footsteps and its echoing wail far in the distance. The camera would pan onto the faces of the soldiers, fear being struck into their hearts by the impending doom that is coming upon them. Slowly but surely, a monolith dark figure can be seen through the fog, until it finally emerges in full sight, eyes blazing, as it lets out a deafening roar, challenging all those who dare to oppose him. The chick leading the army then gets her angry face on, turns to her soldiers and gives a quick but epic speech before then getting the Tortoise's attention and leading it away from the populace and to Naofumi who would deliver the final blow.

But instead they're all running, and then it kind of just shows up behind him. That's okay too I guess...

It's the very end of the episode which you really have to give points to though. While they're all somewhat grieving for the familiar chick (sorry I don't remember anybody's names), she shows up behind them, fully alive, for some magical reason, yay. Of course they would keep her alive. BUT... there is an actual legitimate reason why she's still around. The Tortoise has not yet been fully defeated. HECK yeah, the cringe I thought it was going for by keeping a waifu alive, has been deleted, and their attention has to go back onto the Tortoise. I'm not a light novel reader of this so I had no idea. While it did take quite a bit of effort to take it down, it still kind of got defeated relatively easily. After all, it was hyped up for two episodes, and taken down in one. I actually was expecting this ordeal, this arc, to last the whole season. Perhaps that would be too long, but I'm glad it is lasting for more than a mere 3 episodes.

Was never a fan of Shield Hero, but now I'm actually looking forward to next week's episode.

I was wondering why it advanced that fast as they would kill the turtle in one episode, but of course there is a twist and it is not dead. I wonder what exactly happens next. They can pull literally everything like the turtle recovers, or it is not his main body etc.

I found it weird that Naofumi can't cast a big ass shield to defend the troops to some extent. All he has as defense is the green shield.

CGI of Tortoise Spirit is pretty problematic, but it's still alright to my eyes. Glad to see new power of Raphtalia, she's isn't just able to hack and slash now, she can use dark element I think? Also her unison with Filo.

Plot twist, Ost still alive despite the tortoise have beheaded. Ost will become villain and she's actually just play pretend?

The cgi looked passable, but the scale was off... The drawing though really went downhill, not to say it was great this season to begin with so its almost trash territory here, the cuts, angles and script kinda sucked too, and with how they changed up (naofumi's party went in FIRST with support from the back, not the army charging in first, blindly) what happened so much to the point it didn't even make sense (i mean, sending the cavalry and troops against it? what the hell?)... I liked last season but i think i'll be dropping this one.

That was an OK episode. I think the issue is that this didn't feel high stakes enough. And without the high stakes, there wasn't much tension. Without tension, it's hard to get invested in the fight.

Still cool to see Raphtalia and Filo working together like that. They've both come far.

I don't trust Ost as far as I can throw her. We're basically being tugged along according to what she can conveniently remember at any given time. I'm beginning to suspect she may be more than just a familiar.

It sounds as thought the battle has only just begun. I wonder if we'll see the other lesser heroes mentioned in the previous episodes?

WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT ISN'T DEAD? IT'S HEAD IS CLEAN OFF!

Was it not the real spirit tortoise? I'm so confused! as always this show throws me for a fool.

this was over all another amazing episode, I'm 90% certain the spirit tortoise was CGI but honestly I couldn't tell a difference between it and the rest of the environment, so glad some animes are getting better with it. then again if it was awful I'm pretty sure most of us fans of the show wouldn't been pissed so they probably did extra work to make it look and blend in better.

I can guarantee your eyes did not deceive you. It's the real Spirit Tortoise! I know it sounds strange but the mastermind is still hidden somewhere, and if the Spirit Tortoise did actually died then how come the familiar Ost Horai is still there?

I see you lack some of CGI comparisons. What need to search some CGIs and look up at the comments. It'll help you at understanding them.

You telling me that the spirit tortoise is dead, but because whoever is controlling it is the reason why Ost Horai still alive.

Also seen plenty of CGI (looking at you Ex-Arm) in anime, just me personally the spirit tortoise didn't look out place such as the CGI abomination creatures in OverLord season 3 then again that was a flat barren wasteland and creature's the size of a skyscraper.that made goat noises if I remember correctly. Compared to the spirit tortoise that has a rock on it's shell or shell made from rock that's pointy either way it was difficult to tell compared to the usually cgi abominations I'm used to.

This is just... boring? I didn't love the first season altough I was one of those that was interested because of the initial hate Naofumi got, but since all of that is in the past, right now this looks like any other generic isekai with dumb fights without or with very little logic in their actions (and convenient magic like "I'm going to give you my power too! [Pew sounds]")

Ziyall said:
Okay, we've established that a lot of the story has been cut, and I get why. If you're into the story and read the novels, you don't mind the training arcs and such, but it can be boring in an anime. But this feels so wonky, I guess is the word I wanna use...

I'm glad I'm a novel reader, and I feel you need to be a novel reader in order to get any sense of what going on. Things seems to be all over the place, not only in terms of the story telling, but also in terms of cinematography. Some shots doesn't seem to make much sense and could be easily cut, while other would are missing. Just a quick line or two from someone saying something about something to explain why events unfold, or simply show it on screen. It feels so messy, almost like if it was a film student or something directing it.

I don't want to trash talk it, because I love this series. But some of the creative decisions just seems so strange to me. There is also so much cg, and it looks terrible, at least some of it. The turtle looks to be lagging when it's moving, almost like it's made and programmed with less fps then the rest of the anime. It looks like cg in anime looked 3-4 years ago, and they've had much more time to work on it. Granted, I know many of the delays were due to covid, but still.

It feels rushed, and it's a shame. Granted, this arc isn't my favorite, and the author really starts hitting it home in terms of great writing around vol. 10 and onwards, after this arc is over. But I still feel it's being done a bit of a disservice.

My biggest fear is that people will drop the series very quickly, if they haven't already. And given what's been teasted in the opening, there is a lot of really good story to come. And Shield Hero is a really good story, it would be a bit of a shame if an anime adaptation that doesn't live up to the quality of season 1 in terms of production would be the thing that kills that buzz for the series. And unfortunately, I fear this might be the case, unless things improve very soon.

I think that you are one of the few people that read and like the source material, but also can understand why people may not like the anime and its fails in terms of adaptation. Thank you for that.

Also, the anime and the source material are two different things, don't feel sorry for disliking/criticizing the adaptation.

Well except season 1 was adapted pretty well, story wise, art and animation where also FAR better (even if they weren't super amazing or anything outside some select scenes, also UI of the shield, vfx of magic and skills looked really smooth and good), it was also well directed. This season though COMPLETELY jambled up the story, is horribly directed, and looks like shit frankly - the characters are barely passable but the animation is near non existent and the backgrounds vary from just a little over ok to horrible washed out garbage, especially this episode.

I don't know man... This season hasn't really clicked with me as well as the first season of the Shield Hero did. I think it is mostly because the 2nd season doesn't have the really appealing and exciting revenge arc that the first season had anymore. I am not saying this season is bad but it isn't as good as the first season was in my opinion either...

The first season was a 9/10 or a 10/10 for me. This season is looking like a low 8/10 or a 7/10 so far.

I am cautiously optimistic that the spirit tortoise arc will make a comeback and hopefully rekindle my burning love for this show. But we can only wait and see how the rest of the season pans out.

But so far the pacing of the 2nd season just seems very odd, it constantly seems like they're in a rush to advance the plot which makes it lose some of the nice little details and moments the first season had.

I am always skeptical of early reviews because the show still hasn't even completed 50% of its season yet but they do paint a picture of the show so far.

My biggest problem is that this whole battle with the tortoise... it's just meaningless.

It's a side quest that came out of nowhere, introduces some new one dimensional characters extremely quickly, and overall doesn't really achieve anything. Granted, it has been only 3 episodes, but just comparing this to the whale fight in re zero for example, the battle there is WAYYYYY more intense. There was proper build up for it, crusch-san and all the other characters were significatnly more interesting and, it wasn't certain at all if they would win at all. Since its re:zero, anything could go wrong

I realllllly hope things get better from here on out, I heard that they are rushing this arc since it's not the best, and that the things afterwards are the good stuff. But for now, its extremely mediocre.

Almost no impact seen from the tortoise, you see nothing of the hero, no RPG element, no adventure, just a big ass tortoise and we just slash it until it dies.

Ya know.. I'm all for a good climactic fight.. even if it doesn't ends there.. But this is waaay too fast paced.. WTF.. we literally got introduced to the big ass turtle 2 episodes back and we are now having war with it? where people are literally dying?

At least give me some time to get used to the characters , the world and especially when there is a 4 year gap between season 1 and season 2.. I don't even know half the characters or what's going on..

Reading other people comments, looks like the studio decided to skip the freaking training arc.. so we the viewers are going in blind.. and we will see stuff that we won't even know how our main cast got..

All these complains and I haven't even touched the production value..

They had 3+ years to work on this and they butchered it..

I don't care about what's happening because nothing was built up. They just flung us into this arc with slightly stronger characters and other side characters that we haven't gotten to know. I don't feel sad that the general/king guy died in that explosion, but the characters facial expressions tell me I should. They feel sad that the familar woman "died", why you only knew her for a day.

I'm so disappointed with this season. Shield Hero season 2 should have been the star of the Spring 2022 season. For goodness sake they pushed it back 6 months, just to deliver this rushed crap.

The only positive thing I can say is that the episodes go by fast. But, overall, that was a boring and ultimately anticlimactic battle that peaked with -- surprise, surprise, we do have 9 more episodes to go after all -- the Spirit Tortoise still ain't dead.

I'm not even sure what's making this season so uninteresting. The entire atmosphere of the anime just feels toned down compared to how vibrant things were in season one.

This season is definitely a let down... at least I still have Kaguya to lean on.
