I liked the ending. Life goes on, and people go their separate ways. I didn't think for a second they would end up together.

Also I loved how this manga ended up with 69 chapters. Coincidence? I think not.

Exactly my thoughts (and I also think the 69 chapters were fitting ;) ). Personally, I love the way it ended. I admit it surprised me, since I really did think they would have their family together. But I like how it caught me off guard, and I thought it was fitting.
I can totally understand why it bothered so many people. I just thought it was a perfect ending to a 9/10 manga series.

i would have no problem with the ending as i understand "thats life" , but the way it was so abrupt, no explanation, no build up or reason as to why it would happen is my problem, you work so hard to build up the characters, just to end it that way for the sake of ending it that way is dumb.

I don't think an explanation was really needed. Stuff like this happens all the time in life. A reason would be redundant or boring imo. I thought it was kinda clever honeslty. It had good emotional weight.

Disappointing. I get reality is harsh and things don't always work out as planned, but I would have preferred a predictable ending. It was too abrupt and felt against everything the manga had built towards. I just can't appreciate it. A shame. I thoroughly enjoyed the rest.

Six years later, and this manga suddenly popped into my head. I think the ending is a stroke of genius now. It's true to life, there's no bullshit. Furuya writes it how it is, and portrays some very tender and relatable scenarios along the way. Now I've lived a little more, it feels very bittersweet.

Wow the last chapter was a real shocker I mean I know that 'happy ever after' doesn't always but all those "I love you" and "I can't live without you" throughout the manga feels like a waste I mean I was honestly rooting for them after all the stuff they went through. Damn I'm disappointed

too many idealistic people in this thread. this is reality. the majority of relationships don't last a life time. just because it's not a feel good ending. doesn't mean it's crap.

I'm getting used to bittersweet endings with Minoru Furuya but it still hit me in the feels, I feel blank , the characters were awesome and the story was quite realistic as well. He's really good at making slice of life stories.
8/10 I still preferred Himizu and Boku to Issho but this one was quite good in its own right
yikes

As others have said, why Ogino and Yumi broke up or who she's with now are irrelevant. Relationships come and go so it's a little outlandish to expect someone's first relationship as a teen to develop into a long term one well into their 20s/30s.

That's beside the point because this manga isn't about romance or relationships; it's trying to answer philosophical questions like "What is happiness?" and "How do I know what my purpose is in life?". It's clever to disguise a philosophical manga about identity and what is essentially a coming of age story (from a male perspective) behind a romance themed manga.

Re-read after a few years have passed...wondering if he kept his promise and broke up with her because of something he had donethat brought/attracted misery to her(?) I think, if anything, this is a story about the suffering that other people can bring into your lives; the unavoidable tragedy that occurs when your path crosses with the wrong person at the wrong time.

Nagumo being drugged and raped by the friend of Ogi's friend is probably the best, and most disgusting example of this. But, everything that happens in this story is brought upon a character by someone else, through no fault of their own and sometimes without their knowledge of the cause. In the other direction, even Ogi meeting Nagumo was done through Tajima...A very good manga, but sometime a little unfocused.

Shit ending. That "this is reality" trope is getting old and is just an excuse to to cover up the lack of dedication. Everyone's saying that that's reality but no one's saying how it isn't realistic that how that wimp became such a hotshot.

0/10. Disappointing.

I don't particularly dislike the ending but it was just kinda whatever. I feel like this would have been better if we got another volume or two spanning their life before the break up and then some. This one just leaves a lot to be desired in the departments of what happened rather than wow this is a good manga department. It wasn't as bad as people say but the ending seemed rather far too compressed if I might say so.

I don't think this philosophy works well when the final chapter shows two relationships upon which the character still bases his happiness. It is in it's purest form, a titular take on how relationships work. It doesn't keep any calms of happiness or sadness, it's just a story to be a story. And yes, I do think it's necessary to know what happened to their relationship that it went south. This is in effect because, a lot is dumped on us without expecting. Considering all they have been through, knowing the driving force for them to end their relationship, would create an ease for the audience to either sympathize or get annoyed at the story for not sticking to their expectations. The story is definitely not romance focused, anyone can tell that; but considering how interconnected it's been a simply life moves on ending is too unsatisfactory.

I actually like the ending, but in the context of the story, it's far less complicated and straight forward with no unique philosophy. If the mangaka, really wanted to show how relationships do come and go, I think it would have been better to have it end of him finally meeting his new girlfriend after the break up. The skip is far too long and unnecessary. Because, why tf does the pregnancy need to be relevant if that's the case. I think he just wanted the story to come as a shock in some regard but unfortunately it just wasn't meant to be a story like that.
