I've known MAL not sure for how long but was initially from searching random anime titles on google and MAL is always popup in the top 5 search result with the most info presented, after times i considered the site to be a reliable source.

Since then i would visit MAL to research new titles when needed but didn't join as i keep my watchlist on a txt notepad, until one day strucks me that my drive maybe failing and MAL has that one thing i need, now i'm using it more than ever and even got on the forums.

On my computer I had a folder, in it I had a picture and the title of every anime I had watched. Of course every image was pilfered from Google. I numbered every anime and I still do, even if I use MAL, I in fact registered in 2008, but started using it in 2011 when I became a seasonal watcher.

In the beginning there was no need to track my anime because it's was easy to remember 20-30 titles.
But somewhere in 00's they went over 50 and it was a bit harder to remember them or not be confused by the mixed usage of english or written in romanji japanese names by the media or members of the fandom.
So I started tracking in two files - AnimeList.txt and MangaList.txt. Also had a spreadsheet file but only with a formula to calculate how many minutes, hours and days have I spend on anime.

I knew about MAL for years (have heard from many people about it) but preferred using AniDB as anime info search engine.
Around 2011 I decided that having my anime and manga lists putted in such database will have some advantages like - immediately accessing information about certain title from the the, also making comparisons with other's users lists.
MAL was the more practical choice because its interface is more simplified (too many clicks and unnecessary information for me on AniDB).

Sadly in 2018 my original account get locked (some anti-spam campaign that forced me to send confirmation through my e-mail...and when I putted my e-mail address it said that there isn't any user with that address...but I was absolutely sure in it...and when I tried other e-mail addresses of mine it told me that I am making too many tries to activate my account...).
So I created a new account, imported my last export, entered the last 2-3 weeks by hand and started using it. I also created a backup account in AniDB.

I found MAL rather fast after discovering the existence of Anime. Before I knew meaning of Anime I watched only some of them on TV and once moved to PC, watched for a while Naruto DUB and then after I caught up with that specific site with dubbed episodes (think around 1xx was at the time) .. I ended up googling for more Naruto episodes and thats pretty much when I discovered meaning of Anime and moved from dub to sub.

Around the same time discovered MAL and started logging stuff.

wrote them down in a word document, what i could remember at least...

before that i'd occasionally forget what episode i was on, and actually didn't finish a few shows due to that

people on Allisbrawl , which doesn't exist anymore, who knew i watched anime, kept telling me to join, so finally i did, only to add like 150? total XD

i knew about MAL like 2-3 years prior to joining, but was too afraid for both adding anime taking to long and people knowing what anime i was into XD

1) Searched for it when looking for a way to track anime

2) a .txt file in one of my cloud-synced folders that I would write names down in.

I had seen a few titles like Code Geass, Redline, Death Note, Fairy Tail, and FMA:B before I 'seriously' started watching anime which was probably Aug-Sep 2018. Also, more or less quitting GW2 has freed up my time considerably for more manga and anime :D

I used to jot down all the shows I've watched into my phone and rank them according to how much I enjoyed it.

I realized MAL existed, but I didn't really take it too seriously until like 4 months after I properly started watching Anime.

Even before using MAL, I [vaguely] knew about MAL. Just from googling to try to find sites to watch on (before Kiss became a staple).

I used to keep all the anime Ive seen listed on a note on my first iPhone. Would rank them with a 5-star system using "*****" after the title. Then I busted that iPhone. By this time, I had my own laptop, so I figured it would make more sense to track what Ive watched on a website. I always have my list sorted by start date, so making up a rough timeline of when I watched the titles was a pain; but at the time I only had 30 on my list, so not too difficult to transfer.

I didn't keep track. And yes, that means that there are dozens of anime missing from my list. Basically all the shows that I used to watch but weren't exactly unforgettable.

I don't list on MAL anymore, though. Much better sites out there for basically every function than MAL. But MAL was indeed where my listing started.

It's actually the opposite for me. When MAL was down for the whole summer last year, I lost a lot of data and I didn't have a backup. So once it came back up I immediately copied everything to a Google Sheets (name, score, date(s), and tags), but I still use this is my primary site because it's easier to update with the MyAnimeList app.

Additionally, I made an account on AniList so in the event that this site ever goes down again I can just export everything from my Google Sheets to that site and use AniList as a backup MAL.

I didn't keep track before, but after some time I started rewatching shows I had already watched and dropped, or I didn't remember which chapter I was on therefore I just drop those shows, etc. Because of this I looked for an anime tracker and MAL was the first option that came in so here I am now.

At first when started watching anime, didn't keep track at all cus I barely watched anything but asked for recommendations on animesuki and they linked to sites like MAL / Anime-Planet, registered in both, decided to use A-P because I thought MAL was too complicated for me. (I was just retarded honestly)

Few months later went back to MAL, it was better for me in terms of socialising and I liked to keep track of when I finished/started something, A-P doesn't have that.

I had just started watching anime (not counting anime I watched as a kid like Pokémon and Yugioh) shortly before making a MAL account. I just remember looking things up about anime I like and finding threads for them on this site and after a little while decided to make an account.

I think I had only completed around five anime around that time, so I did not have much to keep track of.

I found out about MAL pretty much the same time as I started watching anime.
Found it when I was searching for the anime I was watching, because I used to search for Top 10 Lists, Recommendations, etc. to search for new anime. So I'd go to MAL to see its ratings, synopsis, and sometimes reviews and decide whether I want to watch it or not.
That happened around Fall 2017, so about 1 year and a few months before I made my account.

As for how I keep track of what anime I completed/plan to watch/watching, I use KissAnime lol. But even then there were still some anime I missed because I didn't think I'd get into anime as much as I did, so it's always fun to randomly find a series you've already completed around the start of your anime watching on MAL.

Yea, it's always good to keep a backup in case one site goes down, there is still another one to spare. Additionally, not all sites are permanent. There will always be a tendency that a particular site may shut down due to whatever reasons. So if one of them got kaboom, there is another for backup. It is like our computer that we need to have a backup system.

I like to use google excel spreadsheet due to the fact that I can keep track of everything I read or watch, and make notes to them by creating multiple columns for different purposes, by which it is beyond MAL's capability.

I literally only kept track of them if they had music that was good IMO, which I'd buy and add to a playlist that got to be like, 500 songs long pre-MAL (Now it's about 1200 and rather expensive, but worth). If they didn't have good music, I was likely to forget about them unless they really stuck out to me in other ways (*cough* NGNL *cough*).

Then I found MAL when looking for more anime like... I don't remember what anime it was, but it was a good one. Maybe Code Geass?

Otherwise I would have been doing my tracker via Word application. Where I was more Manga reader (still do but haven’t read it lately....🤦🏻‍♂️) to now Anime zone 🤦🏻‍♂️ D’oh.

Jeez..I wasn't clever enough to come up with a notepad, excel sheet or anything.
I was at a site called tv.com where a few users directed me here for anime lists instead of general tv shows.

I used my memory? watched the shows and just remember them. It was difficult so this place was really handy.

1) I caught up with One Piece after a long break from it and searched for stuff similar to it. Google showed me the "Recommendations" tab of One Piece on MAL and so it began.

2) Before finding MAL I only watched stuff pretty unregularly on German TV and One Piece with subs. There was no need to keep track of anything.

1) I dont really remember, but it was when i started watching anime more frequently (untill then, i had only watched a few on a portuguese channel Like Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist etc.

2) I didnt needed something to keep track of what i already watched since i had watched only a few animes.

Without MAL, i wouldnt do anything, i can remember most of the animes i watched, OVAS, speciais etc are another story though.
MAL helped me a lot by making my life easier, i always check MAL before watch an anime and is where i find new animes to watch.
