Diamond no Ace. It should be a lot more popular than it is.

Hajime no Ippo is legendary

Didn't see giant killing mentioned... though the Anime doesn't cover the manga.

Major. I'm not a fan of sports anime, but I gave Major S1 a 10/10. I thought it was amazing. I kept going to the episode discussions/comment sections of the episode to see people's reactions because something big was always happening in each episode.

My personal favourite is Yuri!! On Ice, but is it the best? I don't know, probably not. I usually never watch sports anime for the sport itself, I usually just watch it for the cute boys.

Free!

I'm not actually a very experienced sports anime fan, and I know it's not the best for a sports anime but I'm just saying this so more people will be aware of the series and watch it (:

It honestly depends on what you're looking for. Each sports anime has its strength and weaknesses, and their styles vary wildly.

If you're looking for more sport than character, One Outs can't fail you. If you want more character than sport, Haikyuu's pretty good for that.

Overall? I can't say. I have a favorite, but I don't think it would be the best, persay.

I normally don't like sports anime but...

1. Redline (sci-fi auto racing)
2. Initial D (auto racing)
3. Chihayafuru (karuta)
4. Bamboo Blade (kendo)
5. Overdrive (bicycle racing)
6. Suzuka (track and field)
7. IGPX (mecha racing)
8. Kakegurui (gambling)

were all great.

I've only watched a bunch of sports anime so I'm not an experienced watcher by no means but,

Kuroko no Basket, there is a match that is absolutely amazing I shed tears.
Fav char: Aomine
Fav school: Aomine's school

Haikyuu, the excitement is real.
Fav char: Kenma and Kuro
Fav school: Nekoma

Free, more about friendship than sports.
Fav char: Makoto and Rin
Fav school: Rin's school

Prince of Tennis, a classic, some episodes are pretty funny, the protagonist is good from the get go. I like the characters and their interaction and dynamics more than the sports itself.
Fav char: Yukimura and Atobe
Fav school: Rikkaidai

Air Gear, not a fan but quite enjoyed it
Fav char: Kazu and Simca
Fav guild: Genesis

Hmm what else

Slam Dunk, that anime pretty much got me interested in basketball, and eventually the gateway for me to try out other sports anime.

All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. However, for those who refuse our offer and cling to their western animation ways… For you, there will be great wrath.

If we're talking about anime, then Haikyuu, Ping Pong, and Hajime no Ippo (though I have yet to watch Ippo, but from what I've seen, it looks amazing). If we bring manga into this, then Slam Dunk and Ashita no Joe.

^This
Also KnB is decent but I'll add major/cross game to the list
