As for the axed manga, I know Baka Updates has a Rushed Ending/Axed tag but I wish MAL also had a way of listing the status of manga like hiatus and axed/cancelled. |

Is the challenge final? I want to get started. AudioTsunami said: 50 seems like a hell of a lot for "Hard". That's double the number we needed last year, and 10 more than the anime challenge's "hard" difficulty. I think 50 is a good number for that difficulty. You have all year after all. ➤Read a manga published before the 90s ➤Read a manga published after the 90s Both of these should be reworked imo, for one the after the 90s one is just way too easy. Something specifying the 70s, then 80s, then 90s would be better I think. Also the one shot challenge could be changed to read a one shot that became a real series. I don't know how long that list is though, so it might be a bit too limited. |

I know I'm probably in the minority but if there are others like me who are attempting the manga challange to read more manga since I don't read a lot then if the challange list is exactly the amount of hard then a couple of the suggestions would stop us from being able to do hard if we wanted to (Which I do want to). 58 Read a manga from an Author you normally dislike 89 Finish a dropped manga I think these two limit someone like me who hasn't read all that much manga so hasn't dropped anything yet and hasn't read enough to have a disliked Author yet. Otherwise I think the suggestions look good and I look forward to attempting this again this year! I found a lot of nice manga last year that I wouldn't have read if it wasn't for the challange. |

There are so many good suggestions that keeping only 50 of them seems a waste as well, I think keeping at least 60-65 and let participants choose what they prefer would be more exciting. Keeping more of them could be possible if we could categorize them depending on their hardness and let participants choose a specific number of items from each category depending on te level they want to complete in order to prevent participants selecting only the easiest ones. Yet that would be more complicated and probably requires more time. |

I think leaving more choice in the particular challenges and just letting their be 50 challenges, is fine. I honestly thought that list of 95 or whatever could easily have a ton of fat trimmed off it. 1 Read a one-shot 2 Read an award-winning work 3 Read a manga by your favorite author/artist 4 Read a manga that is tagged with a genre you dislike 5 Read a manga adapted from a different source (i.e. original anime/light novel/videogame) 6 Read a manga that has been adapted to live action 7 Read a manga with a target demographic that does not apply to you (i.e. shoujo if you're a male in his 20s, etc) 8 Read a manga with a target demographic that can apply to you (i.e. josei if you're a female in her 20s, etc) 9 Read a manga that has a main character of gender opposite to the demographic (i.e. female lead in a male demographic) 10 Read a manga with a score of or below 7 in MyAnimeList 11 Read a manga with a score of or above 8.5 in MyAnimeList 12 Read a manga that starts with the same first letter as your username 13 Read a manga that someone on your friends' list rated a 10 14 Read a manga recommended to you by another Manga Reading Challenge participant 15 Read a manga that another user has read for this challenge 16 Read a manga that has a main character that is a professional in his field (doctor, detective, embalmer, etc) 17 Read a manga that has a one word title 18 Read a manga that focuses on non-romantic relationships 19 Read a manga with children in it 20 Read a manga about food, art, or music 21 Read a manhua 22 Read a manhwa 23 Read a slice of life OR comedy manga 24 Read a horror, sci-fi OR fantasy manga 25 Read a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump 26 Read a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine 27 Read a manga published before 1990 28 Read a manga published between 1990 and 2000 29 Read a manga published between 2000 and 2010 30 Read a manga published after 2010 31 Read a manga with less than 1000/2000/3000 completed members (hard/medium/easy) 32 Read a manga recommended to a title you read and liked for this challenge 33 Read a manga that does not take place primarily in Japan , but is still within our universe 34 Read a manga by one of the members of the Year 24 Group. 35 Read a manga over 100 chapters long 36 Read a manga that is sports or historical 37 Read a manga from last years top 30 top-selling manga list 38 Read a manga that has not been adapted in any way 39 Read a manga that is not set on earth or about time travel 40 Read the spin off or the sequel of a manga you have already read 41 Read a manga that someone on your friends' list dropped 42 Read a manga with adults as the main cast 43 Read a manga about japanese culture 44 Read a manga published in the same magazine in which was serialized your favorite one(or highest rated that you've read in the challenge) 45 Read a manga that started the year you joined MAL 46 Read a manga with a non-human main character 47 Read a manga recommended to a title you rated highest in this challenge 48 Read a manga that has an adaptation other than live-action 49 Read a manga that was axed/has a rushed ending 50 Read a manga with no MAL reviews. |

Most of the stuff I trimmed was derivative of other categories, wasn't inclusive, or was oddly objective. I actually had trouble even getting 50 that seemed decent tbh. I'm still fairly skeptical of doing 50 categories for hard seeing as so many people took 7-9 months to finish last years challenge of 25. |

Sorry for taking so long that you had to go and trim the list yourself. The reason why I was just marking off certain items instead of deleting them altogether was to make it fair to different options suggested by users and encourage discussion, not to slow the process down. I already know some of these are redundant and there are some I'd like to remove because they're not to much too my liking, but if many participants want them, I would consider keeping them without forcing my opinion of it just because it's a challenge for the whole community, not just for myself. I will be considering what you chose because your list does make my job easier and I thank you for taking the time to trim it down, but it won't be made final yet because a MAL moderator contacted me saying they want to unify the challenges a little. I understand your concerns regarding the number for hard, but no one will be forcing any participant to do hard mode. Also, participants could decide at any time to upgrade or downgrade their difficulty as they see fit. At least I think that could be a fair thing. Many people agreed that 50 for hard was good, now the discussion moved to whether we should allow extra items for them to choose or not. @Stark700 Thanks for your suggestions! |

Oh no worries man, I wasn't trying to hurry you along or do your job, I was simply making a point. Out of that list of 95, I don't think there was 60 or 65 worthwhile categories. Like I said, I struggled to find 50 I thought would work. And i'd be all for for unifying the challenges a bit, especially because I do both challenges. |

@AudioTsunami Your list was eye-opening in a sense. Hopefully the unification of the challenges will make them more enjoyable! There are a couple of categories in the original Anime Challenge that I wanted to include as bonus (like the TV Tropes one, for example) so we'll see what fun stuff comes out of it! Well cleaning up the list just now (in the original 95 I tried to include some reasons, though I may have forgotten in some case? I don't know. I came up with the list below. It's similar to AudioTsunami's though it's still not the final one. This one has 50 items, but they're subject to change because there's still some unifying to do and also I still want to do the bonus items and organize them in categories. Read a one-shot Read an award-winning work Read a manga by your favorite author/artist Read a manga that is tagged with a genre you dislike 5Read a debut manga Read a manga adapted from a different source (i.e. original anime/light novel/videogame) Read a manga that has been adapted to live action Read a manga with a target demographic that does not apply to you (i.e. shoujo if you're a male in his 20s, etc) Read a manga with a target demographic that can apply to you (i.e. josei if you're a female in her 20s, etc) Read a manga that has a main character of gender opposite to the demographic (i.e. female lead in a male demographic) Read a manga with a score of or below 7 in MyAnimeList Read a manga with a score of or above 8.5 in MyAnimeList Read a manga that starts with the same first letter as your username Read a manga that someone on your friends' list rated a 10 Read a manga recommended to you by another Manga Reading Challenge participant Read a manga that another user has read for this challenge Read a manga that has a main character that is a professional in his field (doctor, detective, embalmer, etc) Read a manga that has a one word title Read a manga that focuses on non-romantic relationships Read a manga with children in it Read a manhua Read a manhwa Read a slice of life OR comedy manga Read a horror, sci-fi OR fantasy manga Read a historical OR military manga Read a manga about food, music OR art Read a webmanga Read a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump Read a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine Read a manga published before 1990 Read a manga published between 1990 and 2000 Read a manga published between 2000 and 2010 Read a manga published after 2010 Read a manga with less than 750/1500/3000 completed members (hard/medium/easy) Read a manga that is considered a classic/had an impact on subsequent manga Read a manga based on a one-shot that got serialized Read a manga that has not been adapted in any way (Anime, Live Action, Stage play etc.) Read a manga that is a collection of short stories Read the spin off or the sequel of a manga you have already read Read a manga based on a true event (or person) Read a manga from an author you never heard before Read a manga with adults as the main cast Read a manga published in the same magazine in which your favorite one was serialized Read a manga that started the year you joined MAL Read a manga with a non-human main character Read a manga recommended to a title you read and liked for this challenge Read the sequel of a manga you have already read Read a manga on MAL with no reviews Read a manga that got axed I want to clarify something though: for the decades we have "published between 1990 and 2000", for example. Does that mean that if I read a manga that started publication in 1993 and it ended in 2005, it will not count? Or is the purpose of this item reading manga that started publication during this decade, but it could go on to be serialized until later decades? Remember you can still make a case for any item you want included that isn't so far in this list! |

Well the anime challenge I think only has 1 challenge where the anime has to end before a certain year. I think it dependson what the decades bit is trying to accomplish. In your example, you can call it 90s manga because it was in the 90s longer than it wasn't, but what about Hajime No Ippo or Berserk? Both of those started in 89 and are ongoing. So do they qualify as before the 90s even though they only spent 1 of their run before the 90s but 26 years of the run were after. Like I think any viable solution(start date, end date, or decade of most years) is going to have manga some manga in weird spots, but it's up to you boss Edit: "Read a manga on MAL with no reviews" This challenge is impossible btw. And there is no good way to find ones without reviews. |

So much work you're doing tsuyokunaru ^^ . My two cent (for what it's worth) about that last 50 items list you made : about those two items concerning "Read a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump/Weekly Shonen Magazine" , isn't it a little redundant ? The both are directed toward shonen demographia . I think it would be better to just keep one . I think we should keep "Read a manga by one of the members of the Year 24 Group" (Personaly I like that one very much) . I would either keep it for the normal challenge or then keep it for the bonus item you talked about . That bring me to something that would be nice to do when launching the challenge : it would be good to have some link included in your first post that would direct to some lists that would help to find item like "Read a manga that got axed" , "Read a manga with a non-human main character" , "Read a manga by one of the members of the Year 24 Group" , etc etc ... It would be of great use tsuyokunaru said: If I'm not mistaking I was one of the ones to propose those items , so I would like to answer . I want to clarify something though: for the decades we have "published between 1990 and 2000", for example. Does that mean that if I read a manga that started publication in 1993 and it ended in 2005, it will not count? Or is the purpose of this item reading manga that started publication during this decade, but it could go on to be serialized until later decades? My idea behind separating the time periode like that was to make a little amusing experience about the "evolution" of manga . By that I mean that, doing all those 4 items , restricted to being published beetween each decade (like 1990-2000 /2000-2010) , one could have a little grasp of the different " manga periode" . Just like for movies that have a different feel and are noticable depending on the periode they were made in (for various reason , like the material ones , especially with the new technological possibility comming over time), the manga medium evolve like that too . So the big idea was to keep the boundary between a decade periode and not just looking at the starting date of publishing . I like to think about those things and do some "historical/sociological study of manga" if I might say , so it was an attempt to reach something of that order here . hahaha |

I think the list is very good so far. Maybe additional challenges could be: Read a manga that started serialization during the year of your birth Read a manga that has a genre tag that you like AND one that you dislike Read a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday Read a manga serialized in Margaret (or some other shoujo magazine)* *Additionally the list could include some of the following magazines https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_manga_magazines so that it not only includes shounen or Shueisha magazines. A possibility would be that you can finish a maximum of three challenges with manga published in a specific magazine and can choose from which magazines yourself. Concerning the challenges with the years, I would prefer to restrict them to manga who were completely or at least mostly running during the respective time frame. The goal of these challenges should be, in my opinion, to read manga that represent the times they were realeased in. Manga that continue into other decades probably change too much for that. Edit: I only saw Dullboys post after already posting mine. Basically, what he wrote. |

Wow, I see you guys have been working very hard on this. Anyway, after taking a look at tsuyokunaru's preliminary list I only have two things to say: first, I agree with what Dullboy said about the Shonen Jump and the Shonen Magazine; it would probably be better to have a single challenge for both magazines. The other thing that caught my eye is the absence of a sports manga challenge. I think it should be there, and it doesn't need to be a challenge by itself since you could just add it to the slice of life or comedy challenge, for example. |

@AudioTsunami Yeah, I guess it's difficult to find manga with no reviews unless you stumble upon it or someone mentions a particular title. This can also happen with stuff that has info but no scanlation/official translation or it's very obscure, so I can see why it might be problematic. @Dullboy very helpful comments! I understand what you and delija9091 say regarding the representation of eras and I can agree with you. I was just trying to make sure so it wouldn't be a problem if someone asked. Also, I wouldn't be opposed to the lists you mention! It sounds like a good idea. I agree with what most of you say regarding the magazines. I'd like to have more than just one magazine-related item, but I don't know what else can be included in this category. @Sethlans I love sports manga and I actually wanted to keep it in the challenge as a separate item because I think it's a very important and relevant sub-genre of manga, but I didn't know if anyone else agreed haha. I'll definitely try to include it in the final list! @Soren It will start whenever the list is ready, but once it's posted, participants can include works they have read since January 1st, 2016, so you can start on your own. @FameWingman21 You asked before and I forgot to address it: the reason why I considered taking out 'debut' manga from the list was because it seemed actually kind of difficult to determine if something was an author's debut and also it may be a little limiting for people who use scanlation-only or print-only instead of people who have access to both. |

Depending on the difficulty the number of magazines to choose could be 2/4/6 and the challenge is only cleared after you read a manga from every magazine you chose. Participants would simply include the magazine in addition to the manga in their respective lists. |

I think we shouldn`t take popular magazines like shounen jump. For the purpose of this challenge, it would make much more sense to take an unknown or less popular magazine. |

That's fine, I understand but although I kept those in the list, I wasn't really that much attached to them either. I guess I want to incorporate magazines somehow because the are an important aspect of publication, but I didn't want to be that specific. I'm not against using Garo myself, but that might not be to the majority's taste and maybe Shounen Jump might? I am generalizing obviously and I will personally check it out, but I guess being this specific can be bad too. I like the one about reading something from the magazine your favorite manga was published in and I'd like to add one or two more related to magazines. Someone I know just suggested to me "Read manga from a monthly or bi-monthly publication" and "Read a manga from a quarterly publication" we can use weekly or biweekly instead or divide it by the three major publishers, Shueisha, Kodansha and Shogakukan or any other publisher. |

Do you think you could make the "Read a manga by your favorite author/artist" into favourite author(s)/artist(s)? There might be people who do not have a specific author/artist as a favourite or they might have read everything their favourite has published already. One more suggestion, instead of "Read a manga that someone on your friends' list rated a 10" could we have "Read a manga that the person who signed up above or below has rated with 10/9 or more" or something similar? Τhis limits the choices a bit and it also seems more interesting to me since you have to check out lists of users you've probably haven't checked out before, but I'm not sure if everyone would agree with that. |

I think adding a plural only confuses the issue. "one of your" is the phrase that better describes what you are going for. Remove the one of the magazine challenges and replace it with the group 24 challenge. Then you have 2 demographics covered and you lose the redundancy of havng 2 weekly shounen challenges Changing "Read a manga published in the same magazine in which your favorite one was serialized" to "read a manga published in the same magazine as the manga you have rated highest in this challenge" would make the challenge more insular and take away from the number of challenges that are basically "free squares". We already have entirely too many categories that are free spaces, such as "read a manga of an author you've never heard of" or "read a manga that is tagged with a genre you dislike" |
