No, Ghost In The Shell was adapted from a manga called Ghost In The Shell.

I've always wanted an animated film version of Animal Farm.
Anyone who doesn't hate anime hasn't watched enough anime.

I'm going to bring forth a few classics and see how it goes...

Isaac Asimov's Robot Series - A lot of anime have taken inspiration from this, but I haven't seen anyone outright "adapt" it. Shows like Ghost In The Shell and Armitage took A LOT of inspiration from that series, but didn't adapt it outright. The closest adaptation I've seen of the series in any sort of medium was the I, Robot movie starring Will Smith, but even that wasn't a direct adaptation. It pretty much took bits and pieces from the Robot Series and molded it into it's own story.

Dune - This has "anime" written all over it. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been adapted into an anime. Too old and overlooked? God knows I'd like to see those giant sand worms in anime form.

Starship Troopers - The western media made a REALLY bad movie series based off the book...and boy, they sure don't do the book justice. A lot of anime seem to have the same concepts of humans vs. aliens, but I'd like to see an anime adaptation of the book...and hopefully not one as stupid as the movie.

1984 or Animal Farm (thanks TheFilthyCausal for mentioning it) - George Orwell had balls...and so does Japanese media. So how have the two not collided to make a great utopian anime?

I don't believe it adapts the book, but there are two Starship Troopers anime.

Ender's Game. Actually, preferably the Ender's Shadow series. That one is more action based and earth based.

There are? I didn't even know that. It's a shame they don't adapt the book then. The book was GREAT!

Still reading it, but a 20,000 leagues under the sea adaptation with at least the setting done by the company who made Nagi no Asukara.

I would have never thought of that, but yeah, I completely agree, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea O.O !

Also, there's The Count of Monte Cristo, which had been adapted into a really good anime by changing the story around a bit (putting a new sort of futuristic theme to it, ect.).

People are only saying really highly acclaimed stuff but tbh a lot of less famous works would also work very well in an anime if done well.

I know it's kind of a broad answer, but any era of the Star Wars franchise could work quite nicely... I'd like to see some killer anime lightsaber duals...

Just to clarify, I am referring to the various novels not the games or the shows/movies.

IT by Stephen King could work as a 1-cour series. Pennywise ftw.

His Dark Materials would be so epic. Would watch.
