the japanese version has non synched mouth flaps also because they only voice act the show after the animation is done. also dubs dont dumb things down

i clicked into a dub today by mistake. there is absolute validity to the fact that after years of reading subs, dubs are COMPLETELY DISORIENTING

Typically the English dubs aren't really dumbed down.
Mouths are usually in sync with the dubbing, especially nowadays. (usually)
Spike Spencer, Yuri Lowenthal, Johnny Yong Bosh, Crispin Freeman, Micah Solusod, Steve Blum, Tara Strong, Bryce Papenbrook, Michelle Ruff, Patrick Seitz, Laura Bailey, Vic Mignogna, Todd Haberkorn, and many more.....There's more than "10" voice actors in the anime dubbing business. Yeah, some actors are used a little too much I'll admit, but its not that bad.

English dub, because I don't like reading subtitles (distracts me from the show and I lose focus) and it's just more laid back. I do watch some anime subbed though like Attack on Titan and Bible Black (dub for Bible Black is just...Ugh).

P.S. It's fun watching European themed shows in dub since it's more accurate.

Yeah I don't know why I would watch an anime with castles, knights, and kings in Japanese. Just doesn't make sense to me yo.

Ok dude you have to admit Japanese voice actors all sound the same too. Seriously there's like the high pitched girl, the young guy, and the super deep voice. That's how I hear almost every subbed show.

The vast majority anime take place in Japan and fantasy settings though. And most European themed anime might not really take place in a setting where they would speak English.

I'm American and English dub voices all sound similar to me. I'm able to tell apart most Japanese ones though.

Watch a lot of subs. It becomes natural

no no it doesnt not when i watch tv shows also and i keep going back and forth between the 2

It really does. It probably helps me that I am an avid reader. Read over 10 different, new, 300+ page books since the year started and thats low end for me. Reading is something I do more than I listen to English voiced shows. For me, it is FAR less natural nowadays for me to listen to an English voiced show than a Japanese one.

I guess it doesnt happen for you because you do watch a lot of English stuff. /Shrug.

Fantasy shows that are European themed make way more sense to watch dubbed imo. If it's feudal Japan or something then yeah subs make sense but European fantasy with Japanese VA? Umm no thanks that's like Amazon tribe people speaking Russian or something xD lol

Hey guys.. maybe this is too late for a Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo marathon but since Bones seems like a nice guy, I'm interested to try those stuffs. I'm just torned between the dub and sub version. Tell me your recommendation for what's best. It seems like they put so much western culture into the story so I kinda think the dub will get me the amazing experience but let me know if you have your awesome solution to my hesitance.

Mod Edit: This post and four pages of discussion from that newly created thread has been merged into the ongoing debate.

Be decisive, watch whichever version you want. If you think the dub sounds better for Bones style of animation then go with that.

I personally preferred Bebop in dub.

Apparently Cowboy Bebop has one of the best dub in any anime, so if you don't have any preference go for that...
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Nope dubs and subs should each be judged based on their own merit. Not on some stupid generalization

i've never watched Cowboy Bebop in English or Japanese Dub, I watched it in Cantonese and it was good.

Samurai Champloo was better subbed for me. English was terrible

They are both good. Champloo isn't as well-exposed as Bebop, but the grand majority of people who watched Bebop watched it dubbed. Word of God Shinichiro Watanabe has even expressed before that he thinks the dub is better. Do with that information what you will.

Sub. Anytime, anywhere. Many of the voice actors for anime are also drama actors which explains the well done acting.

The thing about dubs is that there are VERY FEW that are well done. Some of them being Space Dandy or Haruhi Suzumiya. Dubs of popular shows like death note(shut up fanboys), fairy tale, and one piece are what make me lose hope for the Western dubbing industry.

If the west were to follow in japan's footsteps and hire actual actors to dub anime, I'd be all over them but because of rights issues and whatnot concerning hollywood and all that other bs, I don't think we'll be seeing this happening anytime soon. (Shut up, Shia Labeouf fans)

OP asked "dub or sub". He's asking for his opinion to be influenced by the people in this thread. If you already liked the sub more than the dub, good for you.

I beg to differ. Haruhi Suzumiya has a fantastic dub. In fact, I prefer it over the sub version. Space Dandy? I have not watched it subbed but I may as well say the dubbed version is the best.

Bebop is a must watch in English dub. I personally think watching Bebop subbed is a waste of time.

Champloo is really good in both sub and dub it's up to you what you prefer. For me I liked it better subbed even though I really liked the fact that the guy who does Saito's voice from Rurouni Kenshin does Jin's voice in the dubbed version.

To be honest, I think a native speaker is more likely to confuse its/it's than a non-native speaker. A non-native speaker would be more likely to use "it is" without the contraction, and when non-native speakers learn to use contractions they're generally more careful about it than native speakers who grew up taking grammar for granted. But this is wildly off-topic, so just keep arguing yourselves into circles and don't mind me.

Watching a show dubbed or subbed is completetly different and you shouldn't compare a dub to the sub. For example if a dub has good voice acting (like bebop or champloo) then it will still have good voice acting regardless of how the sub sounds. It is not about which is better it is about if you only watched the show dubbed who you be left satisfied yes or no. And with bebop and champloo the answer is yes.
