Well, I've been meaning to watch Death Parade for a while, so I just decided to watch Death Billiards first in the perspective of someone who found this brand new short and did not expect it to get a fully fledged TV show several years later. It sure is... something. The whole short looked amazing with its amazing visual quality and nice camera shots, I liked seeing a billiards game since I haven't really seen that in much of what I've seen (in general, not just anime), and the story sure knows how to hook you in with its surprises. I was not expecting there to be something crazy emotional towards the end.

I have a good feeling that I will love Death Parade... sure I'll give this short a 8/10.
(who knows, maybe the TV show will be a 9 or even 10 haha)

Ah, I missed those Death Parade vibes.
Though I regret watching this after Death Parade, since the experience isn't as exciting and intense :/

Pretty enjoyable introduction, I was going for Death Parade first, despite this being a prequel, but decided otherwise, because this was released previous to that one, so DP will be next, and from the feel I got from this OVA, I think I will enjoy it quite a lot.

well, the old man said he would give the young guy his spot for heaven.. but he had that smirk on his face.. soo.. Im not 100% sure.

Mod Edit: Removed quote of a deleted post.

From what I seen from the wiki, it is believed the old man went to the void and the young one was reincarnated, there is no heaven and hell, that was misleading. xD

And what I think is that old guy stole the two coloured balls shown at the end and told bartender that he had won because 8ball was pocketed before colored balls, therefore he was sent to void.

Damn it's been years since I watched Death Parade. This brought back all the memories. A lot of the ideas of this short are done in a way that they tie beautifully into Parade like the last scene when Chiyuki is asking the question which might seem like a way of this short to do an extreme try hard and pretentious ending but it is well explained in the series about her. Exotic visuals and mesmerizing atmosphere with pretty color usage. That fight scene looked cool AF. A thing that I didn't understand was how the characters didn't feel any pain when the balls went into the pockets, although I guess in this short, it is represented by the blurriness of the eyes and the sudden loss of sensation of the young guy's hands unless it was a mental thing for him. With that aside, the directing was absolutely mind-blowing. Those camera angles, the sudden close ups, the style, the cohesion of the scenes, the subtle use of the music and the storyboards were fucking insane, especially when you consider that this was just a training project, Tachikawa never misses. They left the ending ambiguous, and after thinking about it for quite a while, I still am not really being able to come to a definite conclusion, there's just so many ways it could go. Also, that smirk at the end from the old man makes me feel that he plotted and fooled Decim. Overall, it's my favorite from Young Animator's Training Project of 2013 and quite possibly all over the years. 9/10

I think what the old man said is that he would like to trade places with the boy because he was satisfied to the game of pool they played. He sacrificed and Decim accepted the request.

I watched this after episode 2 of Death Parade, not sure if it has any impact but I know that I liked it very much.
Entire concept of this anime is really exciting to me, people revealing their characters when under life-death situation pressure
And actually this is the first anime that I started and finished in 2023 :)

A microcosm for the TV series, but I found it more enjoyable all-round.

First things first:

- White-haired bartender is full of bullshit
- Old man was sus from the start, bully in a sheep's clothing
- Cheating sends you to hell (or does it?)
- RIP jellyfish, only innocent and likable character

For a high stake game, it sure was boring. Too short to dig deeper into the psychological aspect, too ambiguous to leave a powerful impact - except for a headache.
Won't be checking the series out, wasn't even in my ptw before picking this up and it turned out how I expected. I'd describe it as a frustrating, moralistic and pretentious short film/prequel. The characters, aside from the young man, are dull and uninteresting. Nothing special about the art either, with those dead fish eyes and weird mouths.
Speaking of which, the denture was a mood killer, then Mr. drink maker, after saying "I can't tell you anything" for the tenth time, suddenly getting so moved by a dead man spitting basic facts had me shaking my head. Has no one ever told him off before? Does he have literal zero knowledge of the human world? Then how is he fit for the job? Shouldn't he avoid making any preference due to sympathy or whatever? "Judging one's actions" then speaking of destiny and resorting to games driven by luck? Oh well, fuck you.
People enjoy sluggish bar stories with a 'classy' and 'adult' vibe, no matter how poorly written, as well as the cliché mysterious and/or supernatural butler, otherwise I can't explain how this or Bartender have such good reception.

Old man I'm guessing went to hell/the void but he's going there looking like a winner lol. Ngl I didn't expect to see hands like that in this episode. This was a nice treat I feel after finishing the series. Maybe I should've watched this before or in the middle of Death parade.

This is a nice OVA that predates the Anime-Original story that was released 2 years after this OVA came out.
Interesesting note, I think the old woman that we see playing at the end of the TV series is the wife of this old man.

The moment this old man stepped into Quindecim, strolling so nonchalantly and then sitting down to ask for a smoke and not caring what he drinks, I knew this guy had lived and seen it all. He was fully composed the entire time, even when his much younger opponent showed some finesse in his Billiard skills. A WW2 child who's got some mean side to him, yeah nah, this old gramps ain't got time to be worried. And soon enough, when pushed to the extreme, the younger man folded HARD.

Bro is bawling his eyes out, desperately trying to win, and when he won he laments the unfairness of it all. What a poor sod. If anything, he deserves that reincarnation. he may have cheated on his girl, but what caused his girl to kill him after he reformed? Who knows.

I like this OVA, It's very simple as it focuses on the participants and their unique circumstances. I feel like this episode really gives off the true essence of the whole judgement side to Death Parade without waffling about with the intrinsic nature of the totally inhumane yet human-like arbiters that were focused upon in the later half of the TV show, which I find entirely shallow. This OVO was great. The old man is a G for sure!

i see why some fans rate this higher than the main show.Animation is crisp and the characters were interesting,The bully old man vs the noob .Quite like the wisdom the noob threw at the end.Very basic and would throw off the premise of the rules of judgement , others on the show readily acccepted their fate without going on offensive against the arbitrer .
