I don't hate mecha, I'm just not really interested in it. It's not for me. If other people like it then good for them I guess?

I don't really care what other people like or dislike. If they enjoy it then cool.

I only like Mecha, if it's Mecha VS giant monster.
Mecha VS Mecha from what I've seen in Code Geass, is pretty lame.

Its boring and impersonal. Theres not as direct risk of life, and it abstracts the fight. Also its not so much the skill of the pilot but the machine (sure shows will try to make it so this one guy or girl can pilot it super well, but I dont believe that as much. Like seriously, thousands of other people and Spinzaku was the only possible pilot with high compat? Yeah okay.)

code geass is a show you appreciate most because of the analytical side and character development than mecha, i guess.

there's this winter 2016 an anime called bubuki buranki that has mecha and it's pretty decent when it comes to the robots. the other things are whatever if you ask me...

How is there no risk of life?

Many series have pilots dying due to the robot exploding or the part where they are piloting being directly targeted.

Also of course skill matters, in the very first Gundam series the Gundam is obsolete by the end of the show and Amuro still kicks ass, other shows like Orguss and Votoms(particularly Votoms) have the main characters either piloting common mecha the enemy can get with no problem and still kick ass(to be fair in Votoms Chirico does lose a lot of his mecha but since they are mass produced there is no problem) or have the mecha not be that much better than the other mecha, also i dunno why people keep saying there is no skill required, i think everyone agrees that there is a difference in skill for military jet pilots or tanks for example, yet some refuse to believe one can be more skilled in piloting a mecha, i have no idea why that idea even exists.

I can't find myself relating to a giant machine. Often there is no character development and you find yourself just waiting for the MC to grab his suit and hop into a giant robot. However sometimes I find some really good animes with some mecha in it that have good plot and story and then I find that I don't mind too much about watching monstrous towering mech appears to defeat their enemy. A good example of this is Escaflowne.

You're watching the wrong mecha then. There are plenty of mecha with fantastic characters and development.

Do you have some recommendations then? I'm not well educated in the mecha genre, after all, because I have watched only a few mecha involved anime.

Gundam 0079 is a good start, if you end up liking Gundam then continue in release order, Layzner is pretty good but its second half is shit, Gunbuster and Diebuster are pretty good too and they're both 6 episodes each, and of course Evangelion.

But mecha isn't for everyone, and at the end of the day you can still watch whatever you like best.

Mecha is the most important genre in the story of anime.

Since Mazinger, 0079 establishing the military fiction era in late 70's and through out the 80's, to Evangelion is the most influentional anime for mordern anime of all genre.

So far the only Mecha anime I've seen are Full Metal Panic, Bokurano and Evangelion.
I love all three of them but I think they might not be typical of the genre.
I'm going to see some more eventually.

NGE sure changed the industry, but I'm not sure it's the main influence behind K-On or Non Non Biyori. :p

Anyway, some really insightful comments here made me change my mind about mecha and here's why:
1/Watching fights to decide who has the best robot is boring, I'd rather see a MC fighting with his own skills (like moon-sized fireballs, or edgy immortaly), plot armor and friendship power.
2/Mechas are old and any anime wich aired before 2010 is badly drawn and animated. (look at Akira for example. You can clearly see it's not on KyoAni's level of animoetion)

90% of giant robot anime have politics on the level of FMA.

Gundam tries hard in that regard because most Gundam Directors aren't really good at writing characters. I love Gundam 00 (ESPECIALLY WITH WHAT IT TRIED TO DO) but the characters in that show were nowhere near as good as Code Geass characters.

OH, RIGHT. The character. GS and GS destiny really... the bad sample of mecha IMO.
But I could follow FMA.
...I guess there are a lot of faction name. That makes me confused.

I'd like to watch it.:d

I forget to mention. The romance story in GS and GS destiny makes it appaling to me (="=)

I know that feel bro.

Romance is the best spice in most shows. It goes well with everything and usually makes the experience better, even in really small amounts.

GS and GS Destiny were one of the first where the romance mattered in some way. TurnA had romance kinda but it really didn't. It's too bad Seed Destiny had to ruin it. Oh well.

You might like M3 Sono Kuroki Hagane if you like people drama with Mechs. You might like Majestic Prince, Buddy Complex and Fafner too.

In my case, the mecha genre started it for me (Gundam Wing to be precise, when it was airing on TV). I wouldn't be watching anime because of it. Anything set in Space with a tag of WAR and a decent plot, I will watch. And mecha satisfies my space battle needs, that's all I care about.

Fantasy (especially medieval setting) and mecha is on equal footing in my tastes tho.

And I just don't watch mecha for the sake of watching two giant robots fight (I skip it sometimes), I choose only the one's that have some level of seriousness and maturity in it. I'm more interested in the overall story of the series, the stories of futuristic war, heck even the politics in it, the human advancement in space and all things related to it.

** Note: I have seen a lot. A LOT of anime, I'm just new here in MAL so my list is incomplete. xD

Edit 1: Just noticed no one mentioned Armored Trooper Votoms here. That's also a very serious show, it's like watching an animated Starcraft: Terran vs Terran

Mecha is a genre that has been dying since 2013. After Valrave, Gargantia and Majestic prince the rate of Mechas have been declining. You can always count on Sunrise to pump out some Mecha because they dominate the market. They know how to handle it well (For the most part) and get the job done.

The problem with Mecha anime is that they tend to be a toy commercials. Anime these days that have a shit ton of 'waifu' material are heavily marketed with merchandise that pertain to their series. When it comes to Mecha, their merchandise comes from model sales or figure sales.

In these day of ages, modern anime is geared to early teenagers and crazy otakus that are heavily depraved of emotional contact. This is why shows such as SAO, Asterisk wars and similar shows that pander to a general audience succeed because of their merchandise.

So why don't models of cool looking robots sell as well as other merchandise? Well...because...I don't know why, but I do have somewhat of a theory on that.

My buddies and I that love mecha anime to death grew up with mecha. My buddies that like anime that like shows like SAO and other Light Novel adaptation animes never quite grew up loving a certain genre of anime...

Mechs...appeal to kids. :/ And the older mecha fans just simply grew up with it.

I know it's a pretty shallow theory but I never quite met older anime fans that simply 'get into mecha anime' that doesn't involve Code Geass, Gurren Lagann or Eva. Hell, even Gundam.

The Mecha Genre is indeed dying because of the current anime market. Which is funny because merchandising was Mecha Anime's strongest suit, but now it's dominated by other main stream anime that has more waifus to boot than anything else.

And this is why Macross Delta and Cross Ange exist. Sunrise is well aware of the change and they must change their anime output to get a profit.

Soooo yeah. I just think people don't like mecha is because they didn't grow up with it. You don't need to grow up with other anime genres to like others...except mecha.

Mecha just doesn't appeal to an older audience.

Mecha genre has been dying since 90's, not 2013. The fact that in year 2013 there was popular mecha anime doesn't change the fact that nobody watches mecha-focused anime other that hardcore mecha fans. For example Crapdoah Zero got a nice fanbase... Does it mean it was good? Nope.

Many people dislike mecha for the fact that it's economically not efficient, (This is the only logical part in this season's Active Raid - the episode where they explain why they use small Willwears instead of giant humanoid robots like Drew and The Other Big Guy) and they'd rather watch scifi with battleships or something like that.

Also, mechagenre is always combined with something else - for example ecchi or romance. Or has stupid plot. Or awful graphics. Awful robot designs. Awful character designs (Hirai face). Awful everything (a.k.a Active Raid). So few mechanimu are disliked not because of mecha in it, but because of plot/plotholes/characters/something else.

It's probably because at times (Especially in Gundam 00) the battles can go like this.

"Aha! I dealed a critical hit! You are officially finished!"

"Not so fast Space Nazis! I have a super secret hidden cannon hidden in my legs! Take this!"

That, and despite mech shows not lacking in cute girls, it's a lot more less...waifuish. By that, I mean there's a lot less of cute girls doing cute things.

Personally I find the way mecha shows externalize the abilities of the pilots annoying and boring(the pilot could be practically anyone) compared to characters with supernatural powers where the character has the abilities as part of them. And I don't find humanoid fighting robots appealing in any way.

Mecha anime can be boring at times. I watched Argevollen and it wasn't really as entertaining as other series I was watching at times. A mecha variation like Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-ne is entertaining at times because they have fun characters. It depends on the series though.

I'm not even that big a mecha fan but the arguments against mecha in this thread are weak as fuck. Mecha as a tag is almost as uninformative as josei: there are robots in it. Doesn't tell you jack about what the show is like at all.

"All mechas look the same": They are about as varying as all the moe girl designs.
"The special robot always wins" is far less prevalent than battle shounens. Seriously, look at Bleach and Naruto. Is it really an achievement defeating somebody when you have some dog inside you giving you powers and are getting trained continuously by the strongest characters in the series?
"Two mechas fighting the whole time": I've never even seen this, the actual fights don't even take up half of the show, maybe even a quarter or less.
"I hate mechas, but haven't seen any": LOL
