| Kanata no Astra. On the surface, it looks like a really clever and visually appealing character-driven space adventure story with some meaningful philosophical stuff. And if you watch it with your brain turned off, it's actually pretty entertaining; it even might feel inspiring. But there are so many plot holes and contrivances (like ) that it deprives the characters of any meaningful agency and renders the philosophical content laughable. When the writing's so bad that the plot is in the driver's seat, no amount of great visuals can save it. Pay no attention to the hand-waving wizard behind the curtain.... But it's also more of a meta-story about storytelling and epistemology (which the very first scene and the narration reinforce, all of which fit with the at first seemingly jarring ending). It's not the kind of show that's meant to be taken too literally, which makes it harder to watch when you're just looking for a good surface-level murder mystery story. It's another one I've watched multiple times with friends who are good at literary and filmic analysis, and although dense and sometimes confusing in places, it's another one with appropriate and thought-provoking depth; I'd argue against its inclusion here. (But some people will still find it cringy, so - to each their own!) g- |

| Code Geass in rewatch. It looks smart and a perfect ride for the twists and ambitions without thinking much and letting the twists carry the series. But when I rewatched it with actually focusing on the story and details a lot more, man was it an absolute mess to watch and it only got worse and worse and worse in R2 for the most part. Bunny Girl Senpai had a good first arc and some nice emotional moments but the science involved in this series feel more like supernatural curses than anything. If its curses, maybe its a solid series, but the logic behind Futaba's exposition and scientific breakdowns on what theoretically happened were really, really contrived and rough to get through. Not terrible of a series though since there were enough elements I still enjoyed in spite of the stupidity there. Tokyo Revengers is another one too, its just a pretty dumb series overall in the end while trying to be smart and ambitious as a time travel story with gangs. |
