Disappointing episode.

I don't want to point out the obvious pacing issues as I found the overall animation, drawing quality, music choice -old pieces- and directing to be subpar as well. Seriously, why change already great panels from the manga for the worse and don't even try to improve the ones who could have some adjusting? Reiner suicide shot was significantly better in PV compared to the ep and the manga. Either MAPPA tries too hard to differentiate theirselves from Wit and the quality suffers from it, or they have no idea what they are doing.

Last episode was an improvement over the first one even with the rotoscoping, but this one looks as bad as the first ep in my opinion. Apparently, the quality of the episodes will depend on the individual episode directors now, second ep only looked decent thanks to the experienced director who has history with AoT.

At this point I'm pretty sure MAPPA won't be able to deliver when the time comes. Shame, AoT didn't deserve this.

This episode was rough. Emotionally painful. I love when a series can add new context to previous events like we just saw. All of us have known the events with Eren, Armin, and Mikasa which started this whole thing when Reiner and Bertholdt bashed the wall in but now we see it from the opposite perspective. It's painful seeing these Reiner flashbacks to when he was training to be a warrior. How he wasn't supposed to be chosen, how he almost died when Ymir popped up, how his father rejected him, it's awful stuff to see, hurts my heart. This content is what makes Reiner one of my favorite characters in titan. His emotional turmoil is so immense, even nearly blowing his own brains out yet he pushes on and knows there's more work to be done.

There was some content cut this episode but the way it was all cut together with this episode worked so damn well. Reiner, Annie, and Bertholdt mirror the original trio in a way that few could've expected with this new information from their point of view. Hurts even more knowing that Reiner is the only one whom made it back home. Ending the episode with an interesting conversation between Falco and that one legged man we briefly saw last episode. We're getting close.

Very hard considering they only have 16 episodes to work with.

Loved this episode, definitely my favorite so far. Judging by the end of the episode (after the ending song) it seems Reiner and Eren will meet again next episode, most likely at the end of the episode.

i gotta say i think they did justice to reiner's character. his entire character arc revolves around his identity as a soldier and as a warrior and coming to terms with his past so i'm glad to see they showed his beginnings as a cadet. can't say it didn't feel a little fast with the pacing but i'm not mad.

ooh boy the fiveshadowing is literally everywhere this episode lol. can't wait to see anime-onlies reactions in the upcoming episodes, especially with the tyburs coming into the picture. prepare yourselves...

What a good episode. It was heartwarming seeing some old characters again. Can't wait for next week's episode. I'm truly on the edge of my seat. Shit's about to get real!
Also I know a lot of people are saying the pacing is quite slow, don't worry it'll pick up from next week. This slow pacing is essential to the story line, you will find out soon. At least the anime is being closely adapted to the manga and we can only be grateful for that.

Cuz as an anime only watcher I didnt understand shit.

Do yourself a favor and read the manga. This episode covered chapter 95, 96, 97.
I also recommend you read the manga for last week's episode as well.
Pacing should be fine next episode though.

Ye I think it's a good idea, cuz those episodes were way too confusing.

Did they just hit us up with that budget saving montage? Lmao.

Now that’s just hilarious. At least I get to see best girl Annie kick the shit outta Reiner briefly.

And yep, feels like they cut a lot of stuff here, but I’m not surprised at all.

anybody can recognize that that is Eren's voice... Wonder how he got to Marley. Reiner wanting to kill himself? perhaps so that Gabi/another kid doesn't have to inherit the Armored? Anyway, we got to see the Marcel, Annie, Reiner, Bertholt group's perspective of the invasion on Wall Maria. Decent episode, maybe a little confusing.

Good episode.

My only complaint is that they didn't adapt my favorite scene where the warrior unit is about to attack wall Maria with the titan horde. Given how dangerous it was outside the wall before the titans were all/mostly killed, I always wondered how the three managed to get from the landing port all the way to the wall without being killed. No horses. No maneuvering gear and weapons. No survey corps for back up. The manga explains it but we don't get it here. I would have cut the scene with Bertholdt making weird positions in his sleep and trim some other scenes (such as the scene where the abilities of each of the smart titans is described... Which we should already know at this point) just to fit the scene of the first assault into the episode.

Let me explain since the SHITnime butchered this beyond recognition. After RBA infiltrated the waited as refugees for the king to make a move. He did nothing, as at this point Grisha had already stolen the Founding titan from Frieda. They decided to join the military to get stationed close to the capitol by joining the MPs so they can locate the king and eat them, meanwhile Annie has easy access to the capitol as a woman. So she is trailing some officials when suddenly Kenny gets the drop on her, as a cover she bullshits a story that she was tracking him because she's his long lost daughter, Kenny sees through the lie so she escapes, she reports back and says that he might recognize her if she keeps spying so they decide to knock down another wall to provoke the king into action, they split up later because they discover eren, eren joins the SC so RB and A go into different branches.
I will keep moving forward, until the CrappaCAMELS are destroyed...

So the story before the wall was torn down but from the point of view of those who knocked it down. Was Reiner really going to commit suicide? He's really affected. And this conversation with Falco at the end was good. Great episode.

In terms of the content, the only thing I didn't like was the Annie and Kenny scene. It felt out of place and I still didn't really understand what happened. In the technical side, the only thing I was slightly disappointed was the OST. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as great as the previous 2 episodes. The rest was really great, and the build up is just amazing so far.

Now, for the comments in this forums (I just can't ignore it at this point), can people just stop this pathetic shitshow? People that were skeptical about MAPPA's adaptation and considered almost like a fact the series would disappoint before the anime aired, are now just collecting all the flaws they can find and overreacting about them. I'm not sure if it is just a big wishful thinking or shame to admit they weren't correct, but christ it's annoying reading them trying to convince people this adaptation is some kind of OPM S2 downgrade. You can see it's annoying when they try to trash the person that disagrees with their opinion.
But this group feed the ego of manga elitist, that despite existing in every anime, they weren't as vocal as they're being in here. And as expected, reading some of their arguments you can see they have a 12 year old mentality by some of their expressions they use.
There's also the "SNK fanbase haters" that also have a big wishful thinking that the fanbase of SNK is either people making bot accounts to keep spamming 10/10 for SNK and 1/10 to FMAB or that they can't be critical about what they're watching. Despite those people clearly existing, claiming that these are a clear representation of the the entire community is, like I said before, wishful thinking. Specially ignoring what people of other fanbases were the ones that started and probably doing even more.

I only wish we have more people that were actually disappointed, but they were rational about it. MironBiron is always giving his opinion with rationality and his comments have definitely made me want to read the manga after the anime ends. But the entire forum of Final Season is filled with biased negativity. At first it was so pathetic I just naturally ignore it, but it's literally everywhere, and it just doesn't seem likely it will stop, even when other people have made threads about this issue. The anime community, specially on MAL, have been disappointing me before, but seeing this kind of community problem in a anime that genuinely has a chance of being a classic is just depressing.

Basically what Annie said in the episode. "I was crawling around the capital's sewers but thank's to that guy, I can't risk it again". The rest is perfectly deducible from the accumulated information of all seasons.

I'll be honest. I feel like some scenes could've been so much more powerful if this episode wasn't rushed.

In particular, the conversation between Eren and Reiner in the flashback. In the manga that convo felt much more meaningful, but here it was more par for the course.

Aside from that, I feel like they really skimmed on the animation this episode. The choppiness and lack of frames was really noticeable, save for a couple scenes. And I can't forget how jarring that Armored Titan shot was. Really hope those are fixed in the Blu-rays.

Then finally, for Eren's speech at the end, I felt the music could have used a bit more of "something" before the drop, don't know how to explain it properly.

Still a enjoyable episode.

Really? This episode gave me Wit studio vibes when it comes to stills and static animation when it comes to these type of episode, I think episode 2 was really obvious when it comes to lack of frames and choppiness and those bad scenes when they were using rotoscope.

I personally never notice and choppiness at all and I think your casual viewers wont notice anything wrong with this episode like how they notice the bad frames and weird movements of last episode.

Personally this episode looked the best so far in terms of art and colour, there wasn't any need for much animation anyways for this episode and it wasn't as ambitious as episode 2, but I rather this approach than the over ambitious approach which didn't really do so well in those scenes.

There wasn't any cringe moment in this episode that standout in terms of looking really bad imo.

episode 3 > episode 1 > episode 2. I love them all but the rotoscope really did more bad than good for that episode and most persons focus on those few scenes and behave like the entire episode was like that throughout.

This week the most complaint I'm expecting to see is the pacing issue from manga readers.

I agree with @keragamming here, I was depressed because of the animation quality last week, but this week is ok. I really prefer stiff traditional animation to choppy rotoscoped animation. This week was not outstanding, but my eyes didn't bleed. I think we've got a good idea what to expect from the season overall. Ihmo, not bad enough to drop, not good enough compared to previous seasons.

Did anyone keep count of WIT's footage reused in this episode? Am I right in thinking that this scene with Eren before the opening is from season 1, and also 2D Female and Colossal titans in Shiganshina?

I also did't really get the meaning of the episode with Kenny.

Overall it was okay. I didn't feel much emotionally to be honest, but it was not terrible. I'm not particularly sad about the cut parts.

Somebody asked if Reiners flashbacks omitted from the previous episode were shown. The answer is no, and I don't think we'll get them.

It was nice to see again the fierce green eyes of a certain hobo.

The scene before the opening is form Mappa, the female titan scene is also from Mappa, the Collosal titan scene is reuse scene from Wit.

This scene is also from Mappa, which impress me because it looks really like Wit studio version, the only reason why I know it is not because in season 1 it was thick black outlines and this one doesn't have it.

@eXtripa69

The very fact that they put the Eren scene in the end is for the big reveal, I know chapter 98 would have been the better reveal, but anime only would have figure out that its Eren in this scene, which I think why they choose to put this scene at the end.

I read the manga and I knew it was Eren before we even got to this scene, I think even with a different voice actor anime only would have still notice, as I have watch a few live reaction and they said they realize it was Eren 100% when they saw his eyes.

So I rewatched the episode with subs and I'm still quite disappointed. The amount of scenes they skipped makes the Reiner's suicide much less impactful than the manga, not to mention the loss of a lot of important information, but at least they did the Eren scene well.

The worst thing is that they could have removed both OP and ED (or they could also remove the titan showcase since we know all about them by this point) and in that case the pacing would have been much better and there would be no complaints.

I hope that what people are saying that from now on the pacing will be good is true and not a cope.

3/5 Simply because it could have been better.

"Sending children to take the Founding Titan sounds insane to me."

Who thought it was a good idea to send children on this mission without a plan or proper intel?
Why are the warrior candidates all children?
Is there a specific reason why they can't use more capable adults?
Is Marley just comically stupid for the sake of plot?

What a great Storytelling episode...

More backstory from Reiner and the Warriors.

Wow Reiner Father was Marley... His father never wanted to accept Reiner because he is an Eldians (Devil)
Reiner thinking if he become a Warrior and his Loyalty, he can become Resident of Marley... But it was just his dream...

Marcel explained why he choose to save Porco & the scene where he got eat by Ymir, still great scene.

Annie are the only one think realistic and wanna go back to marley as soon as they lost Marcel...

Reiner wanna suicide??? Damn... I feel he can't take it anymore, but at the same time Falco just outside headbutt the wall and that's make Reiner realized, he still have them...

As soon as i heard Yuki Kaji voice, HELL YEAH.
That's Eren!

Yep, they said it themself that they weren't sure if they should use their own style, Wit style or the manga style, in the end they decided to draw the art style close to the manga and a little bit of Wit style to it, so its manga art + Wit style.

its about to get real.

they changed the character designs a lot when you compare them to the trailer that came out a few months ago! pretty positive changes as well. Mappa is really giving it their all..

before they even start the paradis island mission they went a pretty fcked up situation that makes it sad.

They used the same voice actor for Eren ...
It kinda ruined the surprise for anime only viewers, but oh well

What voice were they supposed to use lmao, they can't just change the voice actor if it's the same character.

Read chapter 96 and half of 97's chapter untill the scene where anime episode ends. Anime cut out way too much shit from Reiner's POV of breaching the walls.

okay okay i'm currently reading it now thanks
