| There are tons of reasons why I enjoy Japanese storytelling way better, and by far the biggest one is the fact that there's much less perverted shit and unnecessary sex scenes. |
| I think that Japanese storytelling tries to be a lot more original than Western storytelling. The amount of shows that come out in a season that have absolutely nothing in common with each other in anime are insane, whereas in the west, you can expect another 10 doctor/cop/FBI/laugh track comedy shows. Also, Western seems to try and appeal to the desires people want in their lives (i.e. dramatic but steamy romance, angst but with a hot romance, basically everything plus a romance), but Japan try and focus on what kind of plot would work with the story. Meaning if the romance doesn't fit, they don't add in the romance (usually). Excluding the harem, ecchi, shounen and shoujo tags, there's a lot less indulging into what the audience might want as opposed to what the story needs |

| Not at all. Many of the best stories I have ever experienced were penned by Western authors. I won't even say that Japanese animation is inherently better than Western animation. Over all, anime is much better than Western cartoons, because Western cartoons are largely hamstrung by the expectation that cartoons must be either aimed at children or must be raunchy, mean-spirited comedies. Japanese animation is allowed a variety that Western animation is not. It's a pity, honestly, because when I see some of the greatest that Western animation can offer--when I look at things like Avatar and Over the Garden Wall--it reminds me that Western animation, given half the chance, can be every bit as good as the best anime. And, while I will praise anime for its variety to the ends of the earth and back, anime also suffers from common and medium specific problems you don't really see in Western fair. The sexualization of children is the one that stands out the most. That shit is so common in anime it has its own slang and memes, and it's something you generally don't have to put up with in Western stories. Well. Aside from Alvin and the Chipmunks, I suppose.  |
